When when logged in as a local admin - processes don't run with higher privileges. Did you try doing a run as for this process? While UAC was enabled?

"Run as" worked, but wasn't always called. It's not a universal option, that was apparently the problem.

You can right click the shortcut for the app and check the box to make it run that way.

Only some apps. That's why I could test with Notepad.

huh? what app can you not right click and check the box to always run as admin?

e systems was a consumer version of Windows 10 which the previous tech installed - no idea where he got it.

Windows 10 will activate on a Windows 7 license. So should be all set from that perspective.

I don't think so.. and it was a fresh install, or at least I know he used the Windows 10 key that he had been provided. That key was also used on about 5 other systems at the time.

You can work around it, but should accept the Win 7 key, too.

Its actually Upload default server core, when the terminal has gotten stuck for me, I have cleared the core and then upload the default server core to get it to work again properly without rebooting the machine.

Clearing the core gets only General, Events and Console tabs and loading the default loads all the rest.

@G-I-Jones I like Windows 7 a lot, but since the things are moving forward we all will use something new instead very soon. Just remember how people wanted to stay on Windows XP, but finally updated their OS. The same will happen with Windows 7 and most of users will move on Windows 10 or will choose another option 😉

Usually, they use the code and pin to know where they are using color but otherwise default is to allow b&w to print without a code.

Yes really, how does a printer know the difference between CMYK and a page which is black and white.

It's an honest question as I don't know how a Pin to "print in color" would affect this the way you described it.

Okay, there are different types of print black and white, gray scale and color which uses CMYK , usually on MFP devices they have different toners for esch of those colors plus black. When a job is sent to the printer with the color setting on the driver it then uses those toners while black and white only requests the black toner

None of the explains what I've asked. How does entering a pin, allow someone to print in color? I've always seen Pin or No Pin for all printing.

Nothing I've ever used has offered "pin for color prints only" etc.

It can be for both.

Correct, as a standard local account. The "normal" way. Most people don't use AD, even in business this is dropping off quickly. And lots of people don't want to deal with those ridiculous MS accounts that they try to ram down everyone's throats. And who knows how secure those are, anyway.

That is not the normal way to set up windows anymore and has not been for quite a while. The normal way to set up windows is with a Microsoft account. In fact you have to click no to setting up a Microsoft account multiple times in order to set up a PC without a Microsoft account

I tend to agree - most home users will use a MS account simply because it's what's presented. IT folks and some programmers might not, but I'm willing to bet it's way over half that do.

Have you seen a lot of home users doing this? I have not, of course my cross section is tiny. But of the ones I see that have zero tech skills, they all skip it because it is scary and confusing.

The option to skip it's obvious enough for most people I run into - they just do it, even if that means setting up a new account.

It is obvious? not really. And even if they see it and click on it, you have to refuse once or twice more.

Well - the expire notice is, as you said, because the VLMK ISO that was used to install these machines making them KMS/MAK dependant, can't contact a KMS server. You can fix this by replacing the KMS key with a MAK key. Then the machine will activate directly against MS and you'll be golden.

I had to do this for a Win7 machine I moved off my main network and onto a private network that only had direct internet access - i.e. it could no longer reach my KMS server.

Dec 2019 I'm going to have to move another Win7 machine to a totally isolated network. I'm guessing I'm going to need to get it to an OEM Key, activate against MS, then it should be fine forever being offline.

the Pi-Hole is running, you sure that that is what you are using for your DNS? Check with nslookup

Using noop would be useful when you are checking on the status of a machine that you don't necessarily manage.

@scottalanmiller I wasn't referring to sleep mode. Windows use to have varying degrees of shutdown, I'm pretty sure it still does.

@Emad-R I agree with Emad here, Robocopy is hard to beat for simplicity and reliability.

Spybot has a tool just for blocking telemetry stuff called Anti Beacon. I just set it it "full" and leave it be. Portable version available too.
