@Obsolesce We have seen it on both situations and it is annoying to be honest for end users.

Yeah I can definitely imagine that being annoying. If ya can't find or fix the the network or config issue, no choice other than to disable it on all the clients.

      @scottalanmiller

I may have an account I have forgotten about
But I continue to use local only. I believe they call it an “Offline Account”

On my personal Windows laptop, I use my Microsoft account (MFA'd). It makes things all around that way more convenient for me. To avoid passwords, and because I want that separated, I use Windows Hello (fingerprint or PIN). Then BitLocker (TPM 2.0+), and of course the BitLocker Startup PIN.

On my personal Linux laptop, basically the same thing as above, but SW level encryption.
I'm looking forward to trying Ubuntu's TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption soon! I haven't had time yet.

@Mario-Jakovina said in Is it legal? Windows 10 or 11 as a server:

Why would anyone "be happy to report client" to any other vendor (here Microsoft) for violating any agreements between you customer and other vendor?

That's not what is being reported. The thing being discussed is violating the contract between the client and the vendor, for which @CCWTech is a legal representative. This is a business partner relationship and not reporting it would be a violation of the partnership.

Think of it like if you and a friend opened a cafe together. You own 90%, your partner owns 10%. A thief steals from you but only your partner witnesses it. They steal enough to qualify as grand theft (this isn't a petty situation like a candy bar or a coffee, this is more like someone stealing the espresso machine) and your partner knows about it. Would you be okay with your partner not telling you and not informing the accountants to write off the loss? Of course not, he'd be helping steal if he did. He has a business responsibility legally and ethically. You don't have to prosecute the thief if you decide not to, but you have a legal right to know that it happened and your accounting team needs that information for tax reasons and other data analytics.

We find that if we rename the PC, then allow more than a day to go by before restarting, this can happen.

Also, if we rename a PC, then the user allows the PC to go into Lock mode (screen saver timeout with login required to return) they will encounter this upon wake up/re-logon.

In the above two cases a reboot usually resolves it, when it doesn't, we go in as local admin and disjoin then rejoin the domain to resolve it.

Also, in the above two cases, we did not lose the computer in active directory, so after the disjoin/rejoin you'd want to remove the orphan computer from AD.

There's an article online somewhere about why you should NOT disjoin and rejoin the domain in this case, but we have always done it this way and have never experienced ill effects.

So this morning, no one on RDS had printers again.

      WTF..

So I manually added a printer direclty on the RDS server (not from the Print Server (the DC)). IT showed up immediately on all users and was able to be printed to.

So I manually added all the printers direct. Issues resolved for the moment.

@travisdh1 You are exactly right. I didn't even think of that. I meant to turn that off but instead of turning off I had selected Show Icon Only, so it removed the text I was used to seeing but left the icon.

      Thanks.

Yeah, except their main markets are like the US and Canada where Internet reliability is really low. It's like no one there has ever been on the Internet. Oh wait...

I'm sure this has been stated before, but don't conflate you're poor experiences with Internet Connectivity with everywhere across the US.

Granted many places have very crappy options but they still get places "online".

Don't conflate your good experience in one location with my sampling of thousands of sites across the US that we support and monitor all the time. The US has, and is well documented to be, some of the worst Internet in the developed world and certainly not on par with some of the undeveloped world.

That would be an example case. Yes.

Would something like crackmapexec do the trick? I've started playing around with it to validate that some of our security configs are actually doing what they're supposed to and it can be used to dump user lists from a lot of the native windows locations. Not sure that it would get everything that you're looking for but "hacking" tools might be something to consider in addition to the typical bevy of PS and Windows commands.

Interesting - I haven't seen any of these updates offered

      KB5001649 was issued for Windows 2004 and 20H2, KB5001648 for 1909, KB5001638 for 1809 and so on.

I have a couple with the blank blocks issue and don't see a fix for Build: 19041.867

I'll give it the weekend, then I'll just have to start experimenting.

@gjacobse said in How To: for files:

That said, from what you are saying; is my ‘failure’ was omitting the /M which specifies the ‘searchmask’. And because of that omission, it didn’t have the comparative variable, and deleted everything.

There were two things that tripped you up.

The lack of /M to just find *.tmp files Using del *.tmp as the command

First forfiles is a for-loop that executes whatever command you want for each file it finds.
As @JasGot mentioned you will get one hit for each file it will find.

With /D -15 you are specifying that you only want to find files older than 15 days.
With /S you are telling forfiles to look in all subdirectories as well. You may or may not want that.
With /M you can specify a filter which matching filenames you want to search for. Without /Mit will find all the files regardless if it's named 123.tmp or installation.txt

Your initial command would find all files in all subdirectories regardless if it what name it had. That's why you needed /M.

Secondly, forfiles will execute whatever command you want for each and every file it finds.
Since your command was del *.tmp it would delete all tmp files every time it found a file.
What you really wanted was to just delete the file it found.
The @file will have the name of the file so del @file would only delete the file that was found.

@scottalanmiller said in Changing Installation Location for MicroSIP Installed via Chocolatey:

By default, installing MicroSIP using Chocolatey causes the install to go to an inappropriate data folder location and is only available for the admin installing user, rather than for the end users of the Windows system. Does anyone have any experience or ideas in changing the installation location so that system users can actually use MicroSIP when installed and maintained using choco?

Asking for @Dashrender and @romo as well.

      I think this might work:
      choco install microsip -ia "'/D=C:\SomeDirectory'"

      choco install microsip -ia "'/D=C:\temp'"

Did install it to C:\temp for me

Is it working for non-admin users?

Yep, I can run the .exe from my C:\temp. You'll probably have to create a shortcut for a user tho.

      yep, I just tried it - I pushed to c:\program files\microsip

and non admins can run it.

and you're right, the shortcut is put on the installing admin's desktop, and nothing in the start menu.

MicroSIP - open source portable SIP softphone based on PJSIP stack for Windows OS.

      https://www.microsip.org/

It says right on the website it’s a portable app, why would you expect a desktop icon or anything on the start menu?

There is a portable version, sure. But there is also a non-portable version.
