Mount the disk image on Windows Server instance, from the mounted disk drive, go to Properties and then Previous Versions?

That's what I thought. But it just seemed too easy, lol.

Lol, anything that appears with Microsoft as easy should work but emphasis on "should" 🙂

      Emphasis with "assume" too. lol

Does NC allow exposure of their "file shares" as smb? If you have users that can't / don't want to use a browser-based access they can always mount it in windows explorer via webdav. Alfresco allows (allowed?) access via both, but the last time I played with it the performance was meh, which I attributed to it being built on java...

You can mount NextCloud into a drive letter or folder using WebDav.

The question does become the aforementioned performance issue (if there is one).

I wonder how file locks are handled when using WebDav?

There are a few topics elsewhere here where file locking and cloud hosting were discussed. You do have to give up what we have all come to appreciate in file locking. Here is a response in one of those other topics I spoke about:

@scottalanmiller said in file sharing in the 21st century:

@Donahue said in file sharing in the 21st century:

I am aware of that. It's online locking that I am after. Though, I will concede that any locking scheme has to plan for both online and offline. I like sync because of local performance and offline availability, but it really feels like it is best for non shared files. When you add multiple users into the mix, almost everything goes out the window, especially when and if they go offline.

Everything is best for non-shared files 🙂

SMB shines at "always online, always nearly local" files because it handles offline so poorly. It's a balance. To handle offline or very distant (e.g. high latency) networks well, you have to sacrifice locking.

User is a local admin, but that does not solve the issue.

When when logged in as a local admin - processes don't run with higher privileges. Did you try doing a run as for this process? While UAC was enabled?

"Run as" worked, but wasn't always called. It's not a universal option, that was apparently the problem.

You can right click the shortcut for the app and check the box to make it run that way.

Only some apps. That's why I could test with Notepad.

huh? what app can you not right click and check the box to always run as admin?

      Windows DUMBASS-ory..

Talking to my brother, he mentioned some 'issues' with Windows not releasing the lock on the partition. He suggested and this is the really dumb part on windows.

To boot Windows and RESTART normally.

Since grub starts Ubuntu by default, it booted normally into Ubuntu.

I did the lsblk -f as before, only this time for /dev/sda4 - there is a UID for it. AND it shows as NTFS..

so,.. FFS Windows,.. FYS. now,.. to see how to prevent this stupidness in the future.

This why someone suggested that you go into Windows and do a full shutdown with shift shutdown.... normal shutdowns now aren’t full shut downs to allow the system to boot faster.

But he did that and it made no difference

Yup - a FULL shutdown didn't do anything more that the SHIFT shutdown.

So how is a Mac involved here? It seems like you are trying to do a Windows to Windows copy, no Mac in the process?

Correct. It seems that a Mac unzipped the files to the windows server. There was a bug at the time that set the file type bit to something that makes windows think it's encrypted. (thus windows shows it as green and the encrypted check box is checked)

All I'm trying to do now is copy the files from a server that is having issues to a new server.

Where are you running the copy operation from? The new server or the server with issues?

I'd suggest trying to run the copy FROM the server with issues.

He can't, logging in causes the system to crash.

@Dashrender you have to have Dynamic Disks to do this in Windows using MS tools.

Sure, but you don't when using third party tools. Again, I haven't done it in 4+ years, so I don't know what Acronis can currently do.
