User confirmed, it appears to be working. Edge isn't working, but it's not needed. Just made Chrome the default and everything that was remaining was fixed. Thanks everyone, looks like it is good now.

      Awesome!

I finally found the GPO setting that caused this issue-

      Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment

Load and unload device drivers - Enabled with Everyone and NT Authority\Authenticated Users listed.

I had to change it to Not configured.

Seems fine for our customer. Reinstalling may or may not be easy, no idea.

I think that like most of these things, they expect you to manage it through Group Policy or similar mechanism if you want control instead of relying on OS defaults.

      It's a workgroup environment.

None of those mechanisms depend on AD. AD provides no functions of that nature.

While third parties can take advantage of Group Policy - what is your Free solution recommendation for taking advantage of GP in a workgroup setup?

I'm pretty sure local policy is not considered GP.

Local Policy IS GP. It's always local policy, just whether set remotely or set locally. GP is just setting local policy. There is no central control, it's pulled by an agent on the client and local policy is set by the agent.

The sky is the limit for replacement.... script, Salt, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, cfengine, etc.

As an experiment - could you run Nextcloud as a VM on Windows 10, use the Windows file system for storage?

Can you run NextCloud on Windows 10?

Not officially, the pieces needed for it are not available. You can get around 1. by porting or writing all of the necessary pieces for it on Windows. Using the Windows FS is not the same as running on Windows. This couldn't possibly have a purpose. Windows 10 licensing would likely prohibit this due to the range of capabilities in NextCloud.

He is not running it on windows 10. He is running it in a VM under Hyper-V on windows 10.

Well that's just silly, it'll run the same as it does under Hyper-V on Server 2016 using Windows NTFS under it. That's what he has already.

As far a I know post win7 there is no other way to do it other than how you are at the moment.

fun days ahead when all those xp machines are retired!

If they are ever retired, lol.

Well they have been around this long. . . Why not another decade with no support? LOL

Exactly. At this point, there is no trigger coming down the pike to push people off of them. If you are okay with them today, you'll be okay with them in twenty years.

      hello,

I 've had the same issues, and after many attempts and trying most suggestions I 've found online such as uninstall hyper v, remove antivirus, run windows update troubleshooter changing bios settings for virtualisation, and clearing windows>softwaredistribution folder, fixing Windows corruption errors with DISM & SFC tools and restarting bits and windows installer... and nothing seemed to do the trick.. until I thought to try decrypting the C drive i had encrypted with VeraCrypt... and bingo this fixed it for me...
