Quality difference Dell Optiplex micro versus HP Prodesk/Elitedesk mini?

I haven't seen any difference between the Prodesk and Elitedesk from a workability POV. But the Elitedesk do come with US support and generally don't have to dick around much with L1 support when calling in. I also think they come with a 3 yr warranty by default... when you add that to the Prodesk, they costs come close to the same, so if you're considering 3 year warranty - I'd go Elitedesk.

My view is for the UK. With social media and online services, even internet banking etc, all our data is out there and how it's used we have no control. I wouldn't be surprised if they all feed into GCHQ anyway.

@DustinB3403 true.. however I am trying to learn the technology . The problem I am have is trying to learn. Thats how Scale and all these other companies come in business. they take an idea and make it better.

I know everyone has they're opinions about money and what not. But at the same time... this is what fuels my desire in the tech industry. Is to learn new tech and keep evolving over time. Seeing what other best practices are and so forth and so on.

So it might look at a costly investment etc, and a lot of time wasted but that is your opinion. Its just like collection cars. this not only how I make money but a hobby for me too.

      DIVI?

Divi purports to be the most popular theme on WP. It's definitely popular and seems to do a lot and has decent licensing rules. But is pricey, too.

Oh, I googled it and seen so many other things lol. I haven't heard of it before so I wasn't sure what I was looking for.

it adds a ton to WP - including a wsyiwyg editor (if you want to use it), etc..

      Cool thanks - I'll take a look!
It definitely seems more normal fileshare like than SP - though SP can be webdav mapped as well.

Though - I'm curious where you'd see OD4B failing if the users are mainly using it as read-only?

If it's a fully shared (controlled by all) calendar, I would choose Can edit.

That does not answer the question

It is a normal user, the admin account. That went to their calendar and clicked new calendar. They then shared it as shown.

Then I don't understand the question - I said - choose "Can edit" that's one of the choices you showed as an option.

WTF does "Can Edit" mean? Is it actually the most open access? I have no idea.

It's all hidden from the GUI now as far as I know but higher access levels still exist. The only thing I've actually run into people trying to use that requires it is messing with categories.

You have to be a Publishing Editor or Owner to work with them.

I usually end up assigning those for users using PowerShell when the need arises.

      @wrx7m

Just curious, when you chose UPD, did you choose to store all settings or just certain folders?

Some applications don't play nicely with roaming profiles.

UPDs mount at the usual C:\Users\user.name and the applications can't tell a difference.

Right. But, only when the user is logged in. After they logout, that path doesn't exist. I am trying to figure out how to work around that for adding the custom (for each user) erp shortcut on their desktop in their session.

      Add the shortcut to C:\Users\Public\Desktop.
That way it will always show up on each user Desktop.

This would be nice and easy, but each user has a custom shortcut- It has a workstation ID in the target path.

      https://www.pdq.com/blog/pdq-deploy-and-powershell/
Create a script that creates the shortcut each user Desktop and append the workstation id in the target path.

@wrx7m said in Windows 10 Updates - Trigger "Update and Restart":

A simple restart command doesn't perform the update step, just the restart, so the update doesn't get applied.

This has been an issue for a very long time with windows. I am surprised it hasn't been fixed yet. It's really annoying

Well, at least with Win 7, a standard reboot applies updates. At least, I think it does. The main difference between Win 7 and 10, is that they have switched to the osoclient.exe to manage the updates.

I'm pretty sure server 2008 and onward had the issue. I don't remember dealing with it on workstations

I still have a 2008 R2 box and can test it on the next go 'round. I won't have it much longer, as I am dumping it prior to EOS.

LOL - Didn't make this cutoff. Next week, hopefully.

@black3dynamite said in Windows Server 2016 RDS - GPO for Disabling Windows Update Notifications for Non-Admins/Users?:

@wrx7m Is that a computer configuration or user configuration policy? Try applying the rules to only non-admins groups.

Yeah, it is at the computer level. I would like to do it via user config but I only want them to apply to users on the RD servers. I need to figure out the proper way to structure AD/GPOs to not screw up everything else.

I am guessing creating another OU as a sub container and move the RD servers into.

Edit: Since it isn't GPP, there isn't any item level targeting, so I can't do it that way.

If you can make those changes directly in the registry, maybe can allow you to use GPP and item level targeting.

Hmmm. That makes sense. Let me mull it over.

Yeah, actually. I stumbled across this a few mins ago. The guy in this post uses Systemd to restart Wireguard. The key is WantedBy line is probably the important bits.

@IRJ said in New IT Position UK, any advice/feedback?:

You're asking for a cloud expert in competencies, but are saying it's entry level infrastructure. Which one is it?

Maybe its terminology? I use the term 'competent' to mean acceptable/satisfactory. Not expert. After 5 years of being a professional in IT with interests in technology, I would like somebody that knows a little bit about most of those items. 'Competent', not 'Expert'.

For example, if they have been doing support for 5 years for a range of companies, but does not have any competency at all with Office 365, then they would not be a good match.

Maybe like @Obsolesce mentioned, create a few different categories of skills/qualifications.

We all understand that the applicant may touch all areas during the course of a month but what is 80% of their daily duties? You mentioned certain %'s in your post but will they do mostly support calls, setup/config O365, Azure AD setup/support and login to a hypervisor host?

If they are only going to touch the SAN/NAS, support Oracle and do network security only for 10 hours a month, that could go under a "Limited skills" segment.

You stated you are willing to train the individual, so items in the competency category should cover most of their required daily duties. They can learn the rest through training, working in a team and further education.

The Intel's S4610 that @Jimmy9008 referred to in his original post, is sold by Dell as well. We have a couple of Dell servers on order with those drives (Dell branded).

I wouldn't use consumer SSDs in a server at all. They don't have power protection and not as good wear leveling. And the price difference between the better consumer drives and the read intensive enterprise drives is not big.

Anyway, the only problem I see with buying the Intel drives from somewhere else and not Dell, is that they will be under Intel warranty and support and not Dell. So if you need 4h mission critical support on those drives, you better have a spare on the shelf instead.

Dell has to stock them for warranty and Dell has to make money of them and the price have to be high enough so that Dell can give their large customers a big discount and still have some profit left. That's why the Dell branded drives are much more expensive.

Why not buy two S4610 drives in smaller capacity like 240GB or 480GB and put them in a server and see how it works?
Looks like two 480 GB drives will be around £300.

A lower cost alternative is the S4510 drives. They can't handle as many writes as the S4610 but will still be overkill for most workloads.
