Win 10 + older HP laserjet printers
-
Having trouble getting an older HP laserjet (4300 series) to work on a recently upgraded win 10 workstation. I have in the recent past, used older drivers ( pcl5) and was worked well. printer connect with centronics to usb cable, and Win 10 does recognize the printer.

Windows 10 comes with its own drivers like
Microsoft PCL6 Class Driver
but that's PCL6.
Have you tried installing one of the old HP Universal Printer Drive PCL5? -
@black3dynamite Yes i did, i installed the pcl5 drivers from their website , the .inf etc.
I didn't look at any of the event logs, ( sigh), I had better do that before I make more submissions. -
Try PostScript drivers. Some of our really old hp threw pcl xl errors on .pdf docs so we tried PostScript and it worked

You can use any PCL5 driver from any manufacturer for your HP printer.
A while back I encounter some problem installing another HP printer and I didn't have time to troubleshoot so I just used another driver that was already installed. Worked like a charm.
PCL6 is xml based so it's completely different than PCL5.

HP normally has you use their "Universal Print Driver" for the older models. Slightly annoying in that you have to leave any USB cable unplugged till after the driver is installed.

- Check manufacturers website for Windows 10 drivers. Install drivers.
- If none, too bad, get a new printer or use Linux.

Interesting enough, I changed the usb port ( new workstation) from the usb 3 port to the usb 3.1 port, and it started working as expected, (using the pcl5 driver I had installed earlier) Why, I do not know. When I examine further I will update.
Thank you for your comments. -

Thank you for your comments. Why are you using such old drivers? That doesn't make sense, given that HP is providing updated drivers and for Windows 10...
I can't even download PCL5 drivers unless I select Windows XP!!!

On Hp's site I use their "HP Universal" driver when I am setting up older printers. Its always worked for me. I still have several 4000 series working here where I did that.

@Obsolesce Step1 was to get the printing working. Now that it is working, I will be investigating as to whether the PCL6 driver works, or the universal drivers. They have with other older HP printers, this particular one didn't. thus the reason I presented the situation to the group. I am appreciative of all responses
