@Spiral said in Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?:

I would say at any age, depending on one's facts and circumstances, you presumably could make the switch. Currently, during this economic environment, there are many opportunities for entrepreneurial pursuits. Because of the inherent risk of starting a business and complicated by current uncertainty, the SBA has many loan programs in the 7a series, which, if applied for before September 27, 2020 qualify for 6 months of tax free principle and interest paid by the SBA. https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/sba-debt-relief For example, if you took out a $500k 7a working capital loan, the SBA would basically give you a $33k tax free gift. Along with the SBA programs, there are also many other grant programs for small businesses out there.

Good info. Can be an excellent time to attempt starting a new business, for sure.

Well... plug-in downloaded source, compiled, installed and activated.
In "Setting/Plugins" I can see now the "backup-reports" and "transport-email" plugins.
I made some simple test with "Backup Jobs" and all seems ok.

      Thanks guys.

perhaps the discussion of HA should always be left at the door unless the OP specifically says something to the effect of - this was supposed to be an HA solution, why is it not -

Perhaps. Often someone says something that leads us to believe that there might have been a reason for HA. But this is a case where just nothing suggests it. Not even the lack of panic or concern once things were down. They really seemed to have no care that things were down - which is fine, their design suggests that.

In this case, with @wirestyle22 not having been there, he too would have to decide how the system should be viewed. But he needs the information to take back to management "Oh, you thought that this would be HA? THat's odd as it is designed exactly the opposite of that in every way and all of the policies and procedures go against that as well. How were you expecting HA without HA processes, staffing, technology, design or setup? What led you to believe something so contrary would achieve HA?"

not gonna lie, when i saw this chart, i literally drove to kk and ate an entire dozen. but only drink water now. water is great.

Or even better, no soda, no donuts. But since we are not robots, I'd settle for diet soda and only a couple donuts if needed.

they have a flip phone, so SMS isn't an option, but those people are so few that it doesn't affect the masses.

Huh? Every flip phone and service I've had in the 90s and early 2000s had SMS texting.

That was definitely not my experience. I've had cell service continuously since 1992 and did not get access to texting until more like 2002 and never sent or received a text until I would guess after 2006. But I had email on my phone before that and talked with loads of people because it was common in business then, because of Blackberry devices, to have email on the phones. ANd because texting was costly and rarely available, they had Blackberry messenger instead of texting on the devices. We didn't use it, but it was there.

Not my own experience. Texting was big for me and my circle back then, regardless of your experience. Besides the point though... Being a flip phone had nothing to do with SMS.

So sad that we haven't done MC this year, ... yet. Missing everyone, more than usual.

You could have done a virtual MC and brought in even more attendees.

The physical ones are virtual as well so it doesn't seem like only virtual would bring in more than the two combined.

They were? I thought they were just recorded and posted to YouTube like a year later?

Were there actually live interactive broadcasts?

Yeah, maybe not the latest year, but the original two years were done live as well.

Who gave their presentations remotely? Weren't they all done on-site?

Everyone presented locally to the conference, and it was broadcast to a remote audience. So everyone was local if you were there. Everyone was remote if you weren't.

I know @gjacobse was one of the people who attended in year two remotely, for example.

I've advocated we store nothing on our laptops but so far its had little effect. We are very backward here unfortunately. I think storing mostly online is very good and makes services like Nextcloud very valuable in this scenario.

It was turned on by the vendor when delivered. Nothing was stored on the device and they had no idea that there was encryption on it.

A new laptop showed up that way once - I was like - wth?

I think the bigger question was, it didn't get reimaged to whatever standard they're using?

Ha, this is medical. Zero standards. Ever seen any medical that has a standard build? Nope. Or even standard hardware? Nope. Or even consult someone in IT within six months of having put a machine into service? Nope.

Idk when I was doing my business I had a few Drs offices and I reimaged them when they got one.

That's because you got to be in charge, I would assume. Here we are only "as needed" and the head of operations runs IT and only has us fix what she breaks (which is quite a lot.)

Also I feel like the most popular instructions were a blog post, rather than official documentation.

I'm not even sure they have a dedicated techwriter. This is why it is better to just follow the official RHV docs. You'll have to filter out the Red Hat specific details, like subscription-manager, but you'll definitely have a better experience

For those wondering, SS project is on hold. Kind of. It's still talked about all the time but other software projects, with more pressing needs, have come up. We have a team working actively on the back end of SS, but the front end, which is the most interesting, we have to start over and it's going to be a long time before we can look at the front end again. But we are continuing to research and prepare for the day when we can focus on it again.

I think the final takeaway, especially for non-IT folk, is to move away from a system that requires this sort of backup.

      Ideally, of course.

The fuss I'm kicking is simply the fact that you have two machines. Nothing more, nothing less.

Which two, what do you mean?

He claims to have two computers - a Windows based computer from which to mange his Hyper-V host, and a Chromebook he uses for everything else - this seems like a waste - why have two computers when a single Windows machine will do it all?

Oh, I missed the dedicated machine for Windows. Just make that a VM on top of the cluster, problem solved.
