I maintain SA on my servers, CALs and until next year Office. I'll be dumping Office for O365 next year ( I hope) Staying current is what I consider worthwhile.

Sure we stay current.. but for example office was release every three years (2007-> 2010 ->2013 - >2016) It was cheaper to buy new outright than to use SA.

What kind of quirks do you notice? I've never noticed any with Terminals and I've been using it for several years now (and it's continually in development). You've definitely piqued my interest now :D.

What Antivirus do you use, @thwr ? I have to specifically allow some apps to be able to copy & paste in Webroot.

      Sophos, it's not causing this.

@coliver said in how to know which active directory is primary and secondary?:

If you're looking at who holds the FSMO roles you can use this powershell command.

      Get-ADDomain | Select-Object InfrastructureMaster, RIDMaster, PDCEmulator

I don't get why people insist on only using PowerShell to query things that can be more quickly queried with something like this:

      netdom query fsmo

      Am I missing something?

Because Powershell is kind of where Windows management is moving. I get that it could be done another way but the future of Windows Server is powershell.

A really nice thing about XO is you can import and not power on.

So you can remove the NIC and then power on. If it works, you know you're in good shape.

@nadnerB said in Windows Update Error 0x800B0100:

I have been patching Windows 7 machines that haven't been turned on for a few months and have found that the update process takes an age of man to complete without manual intervention. (local WSUS)

Fortunately, I have found a process that's worked to speed up the update process.

Download and Install the latest Windows Update Agent
-- here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/949104 Run MS Windows Update Diagnoistic tool
-- here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2714434 Install Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64 (post install reboot required)
      -- here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332 run wuauclt /r /a

That is way too intense on IT staff time.

Click check for updates. Close window and tell user to work like normal. Next morning, click install. Close window and tell user to work like normal and when it pops up to reboot, do so.

      Way less IT time involved.

Yes, this is true but it can be done while doing other things on the PC. You know, multitasking 😉

@Dashrender said in Update your iOS devices. This flaw is a doozy.:

      What is your driving feature(s)?

      Not what I have 😛

I want Windows 10 Mobile to be stable, supported, and have a thriving app ecosystem with all the major apps. And a pony.

Now that that is out of the way, I like the consistency of iOS, but I don't like iOS. iOS X is light years better from a UX perspective imo than iOS 9 was, but there are still niggling little things that annoy me. And Apple irritates me on so many levels, and that irritation is only exacerbated by managing a network that is 95% Mac.

I don't know Android well enough to know what I want there, but I dislike what Samsung has done with their bloat ware. I was looking at Nexus for my WP replacement, but Alphabet chose to kill that in favor of a flagship that is more aimed at a consumer, than creating a clean experience (I'm guessing, not having used a Pixel).

OnePlus 3 looks promising. If I had to choose today it would probably be one of these.

@Reid-Cooper said in Anyone tried Sync?:

That's interesting. More and more things are moving to a model like that, the zero knowledge thing, but people are used to companies have that knowledge and it will cause a lot of problems.

1Password does the same thing actually, if you forget the master password, its gone. Only thing is when you introduce dropbox for password sync, it defeats the purpose.

I've never looked at 1Password, how does dropbox sync defeat the purpose?

LastPass works similar in that the LP doesn't have the ability to reset your password. One thing they do setup is a one time password in the first PC you install LP on. Using that computer you could then unlock your account and reset your password, one time. You can enable this one time password on each computer you install LP on if you want more recovery options.

Additionally, you can create a OneTime Password list that you could store securely and use to regain access if you forgot your password.

I'm with Scott - stop having in person meetings with that person. Do it all through email. At the very least, write up a detailed email after the conversation, and have him agree to it through email before presenting it to the boss.

Then send the email chain to the boss on the way to the meeting.

      Nothing beats a paper trail.

      @DustinB3403 said:

      Ah....

Sorry for the confusion then. Do they have the resources to run another WSUS server and proper licensing? It really is quite a simple solution.

PDQ Deply has options for 3rd party app updates etc, but requires annual renewal.

Oh, I can easily setup WSUS on one of their existing VMs. Just not really sure I want to with the size overhead for this many users.

Hey Jared, sorry if I sound a little lost, but what is the overhead you're referring to? You pretty much only have two options: Deploy a WSUS server and use a GPO (or regedit) to make the workstations talk to it, or you can manually install updates once per month (or per quarter). I would think you could easily deploy a very small WSUS server (either on 2008 or 2012) using WID and about a 60-80gb hard drive. You could even make it one of the guest VMs.

When I was supporting Office 2010 and Office 2013, Windows 7 and 8.1 I needed more like 120 GB to hold all of the updates, and monthly had to do the cleanup or I would run out of disk space.

Obviously there will be some variables to consider. I was basing my recommendation off our current WSUS setup (over 200 workstations, and 30 servers) vs his environment (8 desktop, 2 laptops and some unnumbered servers). Up until recently when MS changed the way the update cycle works, I cleaned our db every month and we've been doing completely fine with an 80GB hard drive on the server.

The benefit is in having the directory that Elastix uses tied to a directory that you are using somewhere else.
