At what point is it worth having your own data center? I would think the cost of it wouldn't be worth it for most.

Your own, meaning you own the facility rather than colo? That one is pretty easy....

You would go to your own datacenter when the cost to get the features you need from colo exceeds the cost to build and maintain your own (this would likely happen at around 15-60% of filling a single colo location.) And your staffing needs will play into this, if the colo has 24x7 support, and you only need 16x6, you might lower your own cost that way.

This is assuming you don't need the flexibility of putting equipment in and out from time to time or using multiple sites for it, like colo easily allows.

@scottalanmiller so cloud is a buzzword?

Oh yes I used to see commercials with a kid talking about the "Almighty Cloud". This was several years ago but not much has changed in the marketing.

It's absolutely used wrong all the time, but that doesn't make cloud a buzz work, cloud is a real specific thing, but almost no one uses it correctly.

Sata dom? Who the f*** still uses them? Even when I was a c++ coder in automation industry we were phasing out them 3 years ago! Just mainteinance of production stuff.

SDX Central wrote about the deal as well: https://www.sdxcentral.com/articles/news/google-scale-unite-hci-google-cloud-platform/2017/09/

Outside of tech, the deal is being talked about by the likes of Business Inside and Forbes:

So moral of the story; don't bother with a $2.50 VULTR instance.

I had no issue with mine.

Right the system was probably totally overloaded at the time.

I'm sure it bounces all over the place.

This is big news. Some will find it very good and cool, while others will be seriously freaked out by it. I'm curious to see what the actual payload will be for $2M per launch.

Combine this with SpaceX new ISP in space, our entire Internet might be floating above us soon!

@scottalanmiller and it stored in the same data center! So you still need an offsite backup of some sort.

Only if the concern is the data center going up in flames. It's a stateless device. Doesn't really hold valuable data.

@emad-r said in Automatically Add New Vultr Fedora Minion to Salt Master:

@scottalanmiller said in Automatically Add New Vultr Fedora Minion to Salt Master:

If you are using Vultr as your VPS or Cloud Computing IaaS platform, then you have some simple tools to make automating a Salt Minion installation even easier. Vultr allows for "boot scripts" which run upon initial VM creation, along with their automatically installed system keys. Adding a tiny script can make all of the difference between needing to set up a new VM and having the entire process be totally automated.

Here is an example script that you can use. Notice that this is for Fedora and uses DNF. You will need a similar script for APT, YUM or other package management systems.

      #!/bin/sh dnf -y install salt-minion echo "master: you.salt.master" >> /etc/salt/minion systemctl restart salt-minion systemctl enable salt-minion

That's all that it takes. Select the script when building your VM(s) and look for them to auto-populate in your Salt Master's key request list.

But what will be the ID/name of this Fedora instance in salt master ?

LOL, I got confused. Was thinking we were on Sodium, not salt.

      It'll be your hostname.

@aaronstuder said in Vultr Adds a Free Firewall Service:

Is it just me, or is Vultr killing it recently?

Are they? With Linode's improved pricing, Vultr still is trailing for us in most use cases. It's a bit too costly and a bit too slow. We just get way more bang for the buck with Linode and Linode has load balancers which I think are a bit more important than firewalls. Vultr is doing well, but killing it seems a bit far as we are migrating off in several cases because it just isn't the best value compared to it's more mature competitor any longer. It's definitely doing better than Digital Ocean these days, though.
