I never doubted the rights. What I'm unsure of is "how someone in a greenfield situation is suppose to install a downgraded version?" I'm 90% positive if you buy a Dell server with an OEM license for 2016, they will not provide you with 2012 media or key.
What I don't know is... if you call MS will they provide you one? Somehow I doubt they will either (I doubt it because of what I know about the workstation side, i.e. bring your own old key)

the last DELL server I bought came with 2012R2, 2012, and 2008 media.

I've never bought a dell server with an OEM license except once a LONG time ago. It only came with the media purchased. No prior versions.

This was like 2.5 years ago, and it was an OEM license. Like I mentioned they gave all backward media.

Server 2012 R2 is still an actively sold SKU through Volume Licensing channels.

Yeah my servers only come with the media for the license version I purchase.

Why would you buy that? It should be the same or nearly the same as 2016 (now for sale) and with VL you get access to old media and keys for downgrade rights. Buying an old version today seems unwise.

For us it's over a $10k difference between 2012 R2 Datacenter and 2016 Datacenter per host. cores addup quickly.

There's also functionality difference. But in a company like you're the fact that you don't have SA just floors me!

With Microsofts update Cycle SA and the costs of stuff under EA is not worth it.

I maintain SA on my servers, CALs and until next year Office. I'll be dumping Office for O365 next year ( I hope) Staying current is what I consider worthwhile.

It's a pretty nice feature. People often underestimate the value of staying current.

                            OEM.

                            This was pre-ML days.

                            🙂

Sure we stay current.. but for example office was release every three years (2007-> 2010 ->2013 - >2016) It was cheaper to buy new outright than to use SA.
