I don't know any platform like that that has built in editors to modify the files that are in the storage

OneDrive does let you edit files directly, in the storage.

How were you able to bring up the editor? Did you just click on file name? When I do that on a url link file it just takes me to the file that the link is pointing to. I can then edit that target file. In my case it brings up an image editor since the target is a .png file. I can't seem to find a way to edit the text of the url link file itself without downloading it first.

I just clicked on the file.

However, if you really think about it, you want exactly the behavior you are seeing. Imagine if clicking on the .url file it brought up the editor for users instead of taking them to the pointer file?

That said, can you right-click on it in the browser and open it in text editor? If not, then I guess you'll just have to do it on your computer.

Ah I remember the early days when I would get in so much trouble for using terms like Onedrive.

ONly when you were talking about something other than OneDrive 😉

Hmmm, sounds like one of those "MS messed up" scenarios we were discussing in the backup thread(s).

Yes, but it's also a "it didn't lose them their data" because they had local copies, scenarios we were also discussing. So a good example of both.

Actually it sounded like MS found them and put them back.

Local copies would also have been removed if they were "deleted" at the MS side.

Good point. The real problem here is the "customer shaming" that MS always does. Anytime MS is at fault, they try to shame the customer. Whether it is through official channels or "look the other way" as their engineers go into communities and do it. MS employees are out there attacking any customer that dares to mention that they've had a problem.

Like in this thread. Even once MS had admitted the mistake, and fixed it, an MS employee was still on the offensive trying to shame the customer and went ballistic once it was obvious he didn't even know how MS products worked.

I ended up with this: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/cloud_sync

I synced a couple of folders on the NAS/OneDrive/Google Drive/Dropbox/B2.

The size difference on files on my computer was an issue with dropbox on the latest version of Win10. I used my mac to download all files and then moved the Dropbox folder inside OneDrive and got all synced. Apart from some files not being synced all looks good now. I am almost ready to cut Dropbox, part of that I already switched from yearly plan to monthly (was due for renewal on sep), just keeping it a month or two more to finalize.

With the new option of getting MS offoce on unlimited devices and concurrent sign in to 5 devices with the O365 plan ( https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Office-365-Blog/You-re-about-to-get-even-more-from-your-Office-365-Home-or/ba-p/234907) along with smart sync, I guess its a great deal

      It's a great idea.

Amazing they haven't had it up until now.

Makes using OneDrive or ODfB so much easier if you can sync locally.

No, you stated that you refuse to use it because it does nothing to prevent crypto from affecting the files.

It is a file sync program that has nothing to do with preventing crypto.

So your entire premise of not using it is not valid.

OK, so I went back and read what I wrote. You are correct in interpreting what my words actually said. What I mean to say is ... I do not use it to sync. My main concern/reason was to not have data locally on my machine, rather than anything to do with crypto- stuff.

I use it without syncing, and it works perfectly for me. Could I sync, and then add the extra step of backing those files up, sure. But it is working fine for me as-is. Would I like a "file structure" on my local PC that works like the way you can easily access OneDrive like the Office apps do? Sure.

Connect to it via WebDav. This is built into Windows 7 and 10 without any additional steps. No files on the local machine, although you still would run into the crypto issues.

I'm going to JB this one - that's just a bandaid to what Bill wants.

True, but it's closer the what he wants then the local sync client.

Compared to what? WebDav if I understand it correctly is similar to a SMB mapped share. If the desire is to have an application front end to data that can't be easily gotten through is the goal, I don't see how WebDav is any better? OneDrive non sync'ed basically is WebDav, at least in function, again, assuming I understand the way it all works.

That is the biggest question, really. And also, if it was saved as a DOCX or an ODT from LibreOffice.

True, true. Sadly, some of us are just broke college employees, lol. I have plenty of local storage at home (3TB in 'server', another 3TB for local Crashplan, and also Crashplan in the cloud)... I'm covered. 8-)

Creating a new document made a difference. I've known that I needed / WANTED to recreate many of the forms and such we have for HR and the departments. A vacation request was created in WORD and dumped to PDF, which forces a person to use a pen to complete it.

A form would be better... Especailly now with the options of OneDrive and Sharepoint....

I bought a Onedrive 50 gig subscription last year to have an online place to save my pictures. Now that I've personally setup my own Office 365 business account I wanted to migrate everything over to that single account - It's been pretty frustrating the past two weeks trying to move items between them and get the sync to work.
