The size difference on files on my computer was an issue with dropbox on the latest version of Win10. I used my mac to download all files and then moved the Dropbox folder inside OneDrive and got all synced. Apart from some files not being synced all looks good now. I am almost ready to cut Dropbox, part of that I already switched from yearly plan to monthly (was due for renewal on sep), just keeping it a month or two more to finalize.

With the new option of getting MS offoce on unlimited devices and concurrent sign in to 5 devices with the O365 plan ( https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Office-365-Blog/You-re-about-to-get-even-more-from-your-Office-365-Home-or/ba-p/234907) along with smart sync, I guess its a great deal

@tonyshowoff said in Which Cloud Company Should Get The JEDI Contract?:

Yes it starts with a choice of good companies, but soon enough they'll leave after having to deal with technically incompetent committee members who don't understand what a scope is and the only ones left will be companies absolutely incapable of doing the job.

I can't upvote this enough. This is supposed to pay $10b. I will bet dollars to donuts that whoever gets the contract will A) lose money and B) have about 10 deadline extensions.

And after all that, it will be slapped together and almost unusable because of the red tape and ever moving goal posts of the scope of work.

Yeah, I get all that. But this is definitely just "normal USB", as it is a normal computer. Concepts unique to mobility don't apply here. So either OTG is a reference to all USB, or it's not applicable here. You would never call the USB port on your laptop or desktop OTG, and unless you do, you don't here.

But it's not a normal computer, it's a hybrid tablet running a Mobile/Tablet only OS utilizing a similar architecture to Android but with Chrome as it's UI instead of android.view/android.webkit.

Not really, it's running a desktop OS, ChromeOS. It's not similar to Android at all, it is in fact nothing but a normal laptop with no included keyboard. It's as much a desktop style device as any desktop you'd ever use. That the form factor is called a tablet is misleading, it would be like calling an iMac a tablet... the only difference between the two is one has a stand included, and one doesn't.

There is nothing "mobile" about this device. Other than it is easy to be mobile with it. Under the hood, it's identical to some of the world's most popular laptops, just with a keyboard sold separately.

Computers in a domain are not syncing time with the Domain Controller (Hyper-V). They are all set to the local CMOS clock.

I had to restrict the ability for local users to change time by themselves. Is the GP that I created preventing the computers from syncing to the domain?

      0_1538061340847_1.png
      0_1538061350915_2.png

The time can be in different zones and not affect connectivity to the domain as long as it is 5 minutes from the DC time via UTC. Now I would really make the computers to just point to the DC as their NTP Server instead of anything else.

I thought they did by default in a domain.

They should but it is not enforced.

What do I need to do to enforce it? Or point them to the DC to use?

Might depend on the Server and what they have built in.

Dell have the iDRAC that you can log onto and look at hardware logs. (Not sure if you can setup E-mail alerts been a while since i've used one)

The new ones you can since version 7 I believe.

@dave247 said in What's with the massive price difference between Dell VAR prices vs xByte prices??!?:

I think I will go through xbyte even if my VAR tells me they can match their prices...

They can't. That is not how it works.

Well actually one time my VAR matched the exact refurb prices that I was going to get from xbyte like last minute. I got like 5x Dell N series switches brand new for refurb price - which was like $2,500 each instead of the $7k or w/e they were when I was buying them.

They can take a loss if they want, most likely they were just having xByte deliver them directly and not marking them up.

But here is a simple rule... if you need your VAR to match a better price somewhere else, your VAR is making you do extra work and burn other relationships up front to lock you in. You waste time and effort (that's money) and other vendors won't keep quoting you good prices if you don't then buy from them. Tricking you into raising the price from other vendors is how price matching works out for your VAR.

I don't understand this part: "Tricking you into raising the price from other vendors is how price matching works out for your VAR."

The vendor is convincing you to go get good prices from other people. Those people are providing good prices in the hopes of earning your business by being better. Your vendor then convinces you that even though the new vendor treated you better, to stick with them. Your old vendor (the price matcher) now knows that you aren't loyal and will shop around, so they know it's time to "drive to the bottom" and lower prices by lowering service. The new vendor (the one giving you a good price) gets taught that doing a good job for you gets them nowhere and getting you a good quote is a waste of resources, so they will stop doing so and just start quoting rack rates, because you are just wasting their time.

"Shopping around" for prices is a dangerous game unless you are just looking up public web prices. But a VAR, by definition, is not about price but about services. If you care about price, then using a VAR is a mistake every time. You want a pure reseller who isn't marking up to add services to the product. Yes, in IT we need to ensure our prices are good. But you can't get good prices by going around to everyone and getting quotes, it will feel like you are getting good prices, but the products are not directly comparable and the best prices exist only for loyal customers with good relationships.

At this point though, I'm thinking my VAR is really just a re-seller. He doesn't add too much value and when he does give his input, I think it's usually based on a bit of antiquated IT knowledge.. We've bought workstations, servers, firewalls and MS licenses through him but he also does consulting and services sort of like a MSP. My boss has in the past hired him to do consulting and things so we've paid him for "services" and things.... So going back to all the stuff I've seen you post on SW, we were buying stuff from the guy who was also doing the consulting... you know the rest of the story. However, I more or less halted this when I came on. I started asking questions, doing my own work and shopping around for better deals on hardware. I still go to him now and again mainly for MS licensing and the last thing was new Dell switches which I got refurb price.

Alright, I took another approach at this.

Looking directly at the source for different kernels over at kernel.org I can see that the NVMe driver has SR-IOV support from kernel version 4.8.
      https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/drivers/nvme/host/pci.c?h=v4.8#n2015

It's very interesting for virtualized workloads because SR-IOV means you can assign the NVMe disk to different VMs directly and bypass the hypervisor. This is the same for NICs at 10/25/40/100 gigabit. There will be a significant performance drop if you don't use SR-IOV.

This is somewhat ridiculous. The entire premise of Microsoft's offering is vendor lock-in.
Of course you are hostage to Microsoft. Of course they will keep integrating their services until it's impossible for you to change providers. And when they raise their prices you will pay. It doesn't make sense to fool yourself into thinking something else.

If you want separate discrete services you have to stop using O365 because it's already a bundle of services - even without email.

Unless you only want email from them, then it's not too locked in. Just not very good.

Automatic mail forwarding is a "every few hours" task. So these alerts are a ridiculous amount of crying wolf. It's created a "zero belief" system in MS alerts. At this point, there are no alerts, just spam, is how it is seen.
