@scottalanmiller how would you update and install packages without dnf, I use Ubuntu and would be weird if they removed apt...

Ubuntu is headed in the same directly. You'd use SNAP instead of APT. But how it handles things like the kernel, I've no idea.

This process is only for applications. I would assume that you still use apt or dnf for system updates.

There is no apt or dnf... to get updates for the OS, you can run: rpm-ostree upgrade

The specific package adobereader is a horrible example though.

Because until this month, you installed adobereader-update which also installed adobereader first as part of the package.

But now, suddenly, adobereader is all that is needed.

So coming back to this (because I was setting some more stuff up), it seems that Windows DHCP Server does understand the RFC, that is why it actually sees and uses the entire machine ID sent by default.

It is other devices like my EdgeRouters that I have to use the MAC address.

The only problem with the machine ID scheme is that I have no idea what it is before the machine is created.

Granted this is mostly my problem because I always use DHCP reservations instead of static IP addresses (evil fucking things, those).

I continue to force the new systems to use the hardware ID, because I want to only track the MAC address hex info.

One of the best ways to identify a veteran fisherman vs an inexperienced one is by the size of his tackle box. Less is more. The better fisherman I become the less lures I carry. It's the opposite of what most people think..

What do you need other than a laptop to make connector whatever you need to access?

That's pretty funny. Except that a real fisherman has a frickin' boat and nets. Tackle box is for amateurs. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Using a net is much easier than fishing lures. With a net, you only need to find fish. Find bait fisherman needs to find and hook the fish. The sport fisherman needs to find, lure and hook in the fish.

While fishing with a net yeilds the most numbers, obviously it doesn't translate to more pay. The highest paid fishermen are sport fishermen. Obviously the sponsored tournament guys are millionaires, but many local guys do quite well. Sport fishing charters often charge $700-1000 a day. We have about 100 of them just in our county. We are a big tourist area, but most areas have 10-20 of those guys in each area around The US. I know of many fishing guides and charters around the world as well.

I understand what you're saying - I have a friend that's really into fly fishing. But sports fishing is still small potatoes to the commercial fishing industry. They make billions.

Sport fishing has 110 billion dollar industry in just US.

That's like $300 per citizen (including babies, prisoners, etc.), per year. I have no idea what the fishing population is like, but the cost of sport fishing must be enormous. My own experience is that @irj is the only fisher I know, anywhere. Seems like the cost for fishing is huge.

Even assuming as many as one out of ten people are avid fishers, and that seems extremely high, that's $3,000 to fish every year for life.

$3k a year spent on fishing is not uncommon at all.

It couldn't be given the size of the market. But 1:10 people as avid fishers seems extreme.

Really $10k isn't uncommon at all. Some may spend $30-50k on offshore stuff a year easily.

      That's crazy.

Boat maintenance, storage, and fuel is really expensive.

      Very true. It adds up.

In NY, fishing tends to be waders in a creek. Not ships out at sea.

It's still more expensive than you think for a casual fisherman. Trout fishing requires alot of flies and fly fishering itself is very expensive. Rods go from $200-800.

Alot of guys in NY can even get to $3k in a year. It just depends on how many different types of fishing you do and how often you do it. It's not a cheap hobby

And I like fish (to eat), a lot. And that seems like a lot 🙂

Docker in general IT is great for immutable server design. If you want to do OS updates, config changes, etc you roll out a new container.

The downside is if it's not for software you write yourselves, deploying a new version of the software might not be so smooth if the database or backing data storage has to also be updated. You can't design it to be able to be able to do a rolling update, or to be able to rollback, so it's not quite as useful then.

      Ransomware is not fun.

NotPetya damages were in the 10 billion range. One enterprise I work for at times was down for weeks. Having backup is not enough - you need to be able to access your backup too. When everything is down you don't have any computers to access anything with. Sure you can reinstall but where are your image files? When you do have computers you have no DHCP, no DNS, no AD etc. You have no internet access, no email, no phones. Yeah, backup is not enough. You need an elaborate emergency plan.

@dave247 said in Need some help with SQL Server 2016 Standard licensing (price confusion):

      Hi friends.

I am working on building a new physical server to replace one which is running older versions of Windows and SQL server, plus it is almost out of storage space so this needs to be done sooner than later.

This SQL server is running a 3rd party application and they currently only support up to SQL 2016, so that's what I have to install - not 2017. And it's going to be SQL 2016 Standard Edition running on Windows 2016 Server Standard with 16 cores.

I spent a while researching SQL sever licensing to try and get an idea of how much it's going to cost. I haven't dealt with SQL server licensing yet.

First, I assumed that I would still have to purchase SQL Server 2017 core licenses with downgrade rights. So looking on the SQL Sever Pricing page, it looks as though Standard - per core price is $3,717 (2 pack). So if my server has a total of 16 cores, this is going to cost about $29,736 to cover SQL licensing.

Then I checked over on CDW just to get an idea of prices and things and I had the idea to search "SQL 2016" when I found this: SQL Server 2016 Standard - license - 16 cores - with Server 2016 Standard for like $1,900.

Is this even applicable to what I'm doing or am I missing something? It does say in the technical details "BIOS locked (Lenovo)" but I have no idea what that refers to. But other than that, it looks like it's licensing SQL Server 2016 for 16 cores and bundled with Windows Server 2016. Surly this can't be correct... or is it? If it is actually what I would need to be covered, I would purchase it, of course.

Otherwise, can someone help me get an idea of what I should be paying for SQL Server 2016 Standard Edition for 16 cores if not the cost I initially calculated ($29,736)? And I don't think we'd do the server + cal licensing as we have about 80 users and 100 or more systems which would connect to the SQL server.

Simple rule of thumb to ask your Microsoft licensing rep for the following:
First option is license + CALs that allows internal access only with unlimited instances on the server and unlimited cores:

SQL Server Standard License SQL Server Standard User CALs (80 Users)

Second option is per core with a minimum of 4 to purchase:

SQL Server Standard Per Core 2-Pack (2x)

In the Per Core scenario we can license for the number of physical cores to use and delimit that in SQL Studio Management. When it comes to audit, a snip of that setting that only allows the four threads should be just fine.

So if you license + CAL, do you have to cover all users AND computers?

If you license by user you cover users. If you license by device you cover devices.

Well what constitutes as a device? I mean, users use a device to connect to the SQL server... so wouldn't I have to cover both? I don't get it.

That is never how Microsoft CALs have worked.

ok, I finally re-read the overview.. makes sense again. We have a pretty even user/device ratio with slight fluctuations in both over time. I suppose we'd just do user CALs..

There is almost no reason for anyone in the normal, day to day, business world to use device CALs.

Agreed, this is super specific niche stuff normally reserved for manufacturing shift work.

We have a few clients that run two or three shifts across one or more facilities. A shared device by two or three peeps per day is about the only time we've ever deployed Device CALs.
