      @DustinB3403

Does it have better performance & is it easier to setup?

That is all dependent on how comfortable you are with software / hardware raid.

Even for software RAID experts, hardware RAID is easier.

well yeah - it's practically plug and play - so few options.

Plus, in hardware RAID (assuming the chassis supports it) you get hot swap, something you don't get with Software RAID.

All enterprise software RAID has hot swap and always has. Only FakeRAID doesn't offer that and even that sometimes does. Hot swap is basically ubiquitous. Even ridiculous Windows software RAID has hot swap.

excuse me, I used the wrong term - I meant Blind swap - the lack of need to tell the OS to demount the drive before you pull it from the system.

Yes, now that software RAID generally lacks.

Correct. OEM lives and dies on the machine it was first installed on. It's not transferable. I think what Jared was saying is that it doesn't matter whether it activates or not - that's irrelevant as to whether it is legal or not. Just because it activates doesn't mean it is legal.

      Exactly.

More specifically - MS doesn't specifically go out of its way to deactivate. If it deactivation happens, it happens, if not - that's fine too. But licensing has mostly always been on the honor system.

All correct, but specifically, I meant that he can just P2V the server on to the new hardware and simply buy another OEM license from eBay or whatever and still be legal. Assuming, of course, that the eBay seller was legit and the license they sold was legal in the first place.

Hey - what do you know.. we're on the same page - (using most happiest tone possible - really I am)

      Hey Joel,

Have you considered a USB over IP type product? I've just been made aware of them and haven't had a chance to use one yet... but basically it is a USB connection with a Network card, and whatever server you want to use it has to run a software package to do so...

It's worth taking a look at.

Interesting product. What a great idea.

In the Canada or NY area?

upstate NY, spitting distance to toronto

No, the nearest discussed location is near NYC. There are no datacenter colo facilities worth discussing in upstate NY.

whoops, figured it'd be at your hq

That's where it is now. Moving to colo soon.

Thank you for voicing so eloquently what some of us have been trying to wrap our heads around. I personally come from a frugal era of IT and will always scout free solutions before coughing up the cash or subscribing to a (shudder) recurring licensing fee. We used to buy our modem banks by sniping eBay auctions, and that was at a tri-state telecom. I realize you need to spend money to make money, but unnecessary expenditures should still be avoid if possible, imo.

      You're welcome 🙂

I've worked with multiple companies that had the opposite issue, all of their equipment control software ran on Solaris on Sparc only. So they had to maintain proprietary hardware and Solaris for everything.
