Been a while. I'm trying out Nylas N1 again, this time on Korora and mostly used against Zimbra. It's fully free now, but they've forgotten to remove the "upgrade" links all over the place that now go to 404 pages.

A proxy is better than separate monitoring tools. What is it that you want to monitor?

It would be a proxy at each site though. Hardware and service monitoring with e-mail alerts

Yes. But then you'd have a central console rather than needing to log in to each separately to check in.

At that point why wouldnt I put a Zabbix server at their site and use Teamviewer or something to access it?

Teamviewer? Why not SSH? Or Salt?

Because I'm not going to be here forever and I'm the only person that understands (sort of) the linux command line.If I did this in vultr it wouldnt matter though. TV would be pointless. That was referencing the onsite virtualized Zabbix server though

At some point, you just have to assume that they must hire someone capable or they are screwed anyway. This isn't a case of making something complex that you need to struggle to find support for, it's a case of very basic skill that anyone potential competent can learn in minutes and getting support from anywhere is available. If they have a problem with this, they can't support Windows either - but might look like they are. So it's the opposite of your thought process, you are putting them at the biggest support risk making it LOOK like they are able to support something that they cannot.

      You're right. I'll setup SSH.

@coliver Did you setup a Microsoft account on them?

      No domain joined machines.

Are you sure Bitlocker isn't on, just not activated?

I'm not sure what you mean? Bitlocker is a part of the operating system... you need to turn it on to enable encryption. So if you're asking if it is installed the answer is yes. If you're asking if it is enabled the answer is no.

Bitlocker has three states, as far as I can tell

Bitlocker Off Bitlocker On, but not activated - not encrypting drive Bitlocker activated

In my experience, a BIOS based machine puts Windows 10 into option 1 above.
My recent experience has shown that machines with UEFI and Secure Boot enabled that Windows 10 puts the system in option 2 or 3 depending on setup.
If you add a Microsoft Account while going through OOBE, the Windows will create a recovery key for Bitlocker, save it to your OneDrive account, and use option 3.
If you add a local account during OOBE, Windows will put the system into option 2.

Which Linux distros are you using in the example? Just CentOS / RHEL? Are you looking at several? That RHEL and Suse are super secure I have little doubt. Get much beyond that and anything might happen.

Mostly CentOS / RHEL, but I have quite a few Ubuntu severs as well.

Any noticeable difference between those two?

CentOS / RHEL are more solid as you may have guessed. Ubuntu is still much better than Windows.

I've been choosing MSI more and more.

      My MSI
      FM2-A85XA-G43
has lasted for quite some time now, I reckon I got this at 2013-2014, and constant daily use, and it is pretty neat, no sign of issues and even if I sell this PC I still think it will last a few more years without any issues.

The thing with MSI though, is that I wish there audio component in the motherboard were better.

The recommendation I see for this are:

The backup target should be accessible from only very specific accounts. Those accounts should be used for nothing other than the backup software itself or administration of the backup targets. i.e. no one should ever log in as them, etc.

So as long as the hack/virus isn't able to compromise your backup software or authentication mechanism, the backup target should be safe.

      Try this:

      mount -t cifs -o username=administrator,password=urPassword,domain=domain.local //fileserver/share /mountLocation

No workie, says "Host is down"

Makes me think that your Linux box is trying to connect via an unsupported method.

For example, do you have SMB 1.0 turned off on your Windows file server... and your Linux box is trying to connect via SMB 1.0?

I tried calling out "SMB3.0", but, I get the error "For more deatils see mount (8)"

Simplistically speaking, when it doesn't work.
If it works, then it's a backup.
If it does not work, then it's a waste of time and disk space.

It works well for version 7 to 10 amd office downloads.

Just wanted to add @bj to this thread that I think a $100-ish Cloud Router from Mikrotik would blow most hardware away, including Ubiquiti, on pure performance. With the $50 and under models you are still getting 1 million PPS. The new cloud router series really has a crazy amount of power.

This still coming from a pure PPS (packets per second) point of view.

I think the cheapest cloud router has 12 to 16 cores That would only count for the core routers I am more familiar with (12 to 24 now) in the $500 range.

Very poor marketing in the states but very popular with western country WISPS.

I'm planning on deploying 24 SFF machines for a school computer lab. The limited space they have is a big factor. Plan on mounting them on the back of the monitors. Plenty of horsepower for their workload.
