Right, it is UEFI not EFI, and not an OS. Like I said.

      @scottalanmiller said in Hardware sources:

So you let a salesman determine the best fit for your needs? If you aren't doing any research, how do you know he didn't just screw your customer by selling the thing that earns him the most margin (CDW is famous for how extremely they do this.) And what's your role here? If the customer wanted to engage predatory salesman directly, they could. No need for an IT person.

My role was picking the specs for the laptop. When he quotes me the laptop and case, I can take a look and spot check the price if I want. After he finds a case, I can take a look at it and see what kind of reviews it has.

How would you handle a request like that from a customer?

If I'm only asked to get specs and then pass it back to the customer and my job is done and they ask me to forward on to a salesguy and to step away, then sure, I'd do that. That's like asking your real estate agent how many square feet you need and then telling the agent to not be involved and let the seller's agent sell whatever they can get away with.

But if I'm in the IT role and responsible as the buyer's agent (IT role = buyer's agent for businesses) then it's my responsibility to know what is out there and do the research. Sure, there are cases where a single item is so trivially cheap and commodity that it's not worth the time to research - but normally in those cases you just go to Amazon, at least to see prices. Someone like CDW is a VAR and tack on a lot of cost (normally hidden in upsales) associated with using them. Like they don't give good discounts, sell based on kickbacks and behind the scenes promotions and such - CDW is the most well known in the industry for this as their "recommended" solutions change week to week based on the current vendor promotions. They don't recommend what is good for you, but what is good for them.

If customers don't want a buyer's representative, that's fine and up to them. But is it clear to them that they are being sold stuff by a sales person directly without any buyer's agent anywhere in the stream? It's like going to a real estate sale, telling the seller you'll buy anything they recommend with the adequate square footage. Yes, you'll get a house quickly, but it'll be the one for which the seller gets the highest commission and not one based around the buyer's needs.

Now I see some clarification after a little testing. If I use the graphical tool Users and Groups, I cannot save the user by only entering the username (blank comment), I have to enter a full name which then creates a comment. But if I use adduser and just hit enter on the full name section, it doesn't create a comment automatically. Command line wins again.

I did manage to get Windows 10 Home Edition running as a kiosk RDP thin client. $179 for a Windows Minix, no add-ons or hacks.

All was done in the registry. I will post later for reference.

Considering it has a legit Win10 Home license you could consider it a $79 fully capable RDP 10.2 thin client.

I'm still surprised at the lack of Linux based RDP 10 solution. FreeRDP has really fell behind. RDP 10 or even 8.2 is a significant improvement over previous versions.

This is a great reference sheet.

      https://1drv.ms/b/s!Ar6SLLNOJLHnmkHyMlmbHvg_m8lJ

      The link goes here: https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=!APIyWZse-D-byUk&cid=E7B1244EB32C92BE&id=E7B1244EB32C92BE!3393&parId=root&o=OneUp

I thought that 1drv.ms was the default MS link options now so that users were not posting severe multiline links in documents.

When I first seen the link, I had no idea what it was. I figured I wasn't the only one, so my post was for those people.

Right, I get not trusting third party URL shorteners and such. But this is a MS design and part of the product.

It wasn't about trust. I didn't know what it was. I didn't completely read the link because it didn't look like words at quick glance. Upon further inspection, I could see that 1drive.ms was one drive Microsoft... I get it. But again, when I first seen it, I didn't notice and would have preferred the full link instead...

So, I still posted the long version for those who are like me.

My thought. I don't think I've seen a system firewall not accept icmp by default.

If you stop iptables and still can't ping it's not the firewall.

      I listen to twit.tv podcasts 🙂

To me Twit.tv is about the same as SW. Not really in-depth as far as technical, but more journalistic and IT Buyers club from what I can see.

WHAT? I suppose some of their podcasts might be like that, but security now definitely is not.

Steve Gibson isn't the greatest advocate for security. SecurityNow is more an in-depth look at tech than any real security. Also, yes, I'm a fan, but I know that it's not a good resource for security anything.

Yeah - sadly he has allowed people's unwillingness to be secure to creep into his recommendations. 😞

Going to turn your storage into a file server.

Why wouldn't you just bring up a Linux SMB or Windows server? I can't imagine why you would want user access directly to the hardware?

Thank you. That doesn't make sense to me at all either.

@Francesco-Provino said in Modern iPad security: the most secure endpoint ever?:

Why don't go instead with a stateless endpoint that has a completely reproducible configuration in 2-3 taps?

In that scenario, as a stateless endpoint, is iOS buying you that much over ChromeOS?

I think android is less secure because it's a patchwork; also less stable, less integrated with the hardware and based on older design and technologies.
Other than that, I prefer apple hardware.

I haven't looked into it - what make Android a patchwork? I'll agree it's less stable than iOS - but I blame that on the small integration times between versions, so vendors never have/take the time to make things as good as they can be.

People/trade rags are complaining that Apple is boring now, not innovative with the iPhone anymore (and no, removing the headphone jack wasn't innovative 😉 ) but then, does it really need to be? There hardware/software integration is second to none. There's probably always polish that can be added, hence some of the recent revisions, but in general it seems to be gleaming the cube.

The kernel is Linux, that wasn't born at all for mobility (big effort of google for making it usable for that purpose), and every vendor has its own customized UI and other parts of the system. So every vendor-related piece is developed as a snowflake by relatively small teams and is at risk of becaming abandonware. Low code quality strict deadlines…

I tried one of the earlier firmware iteration of the S7 edge… just a horrible mess of non-integrated software put together. The cam wasn't working at all. Ok, they fix it in the end, but… light years from what I've seen on my iOS devices.

I would like to point out againthat I'm not a fanboy in any way, I went through the iPhone just because it was my business-supplied phone. It just works for what I need, it's insanely stable and polished.
Maybe the only thing that iOS really lacks at the moment is burning an ISO to a pendrive in a dd-fashion… but I could carry with me a raspberry or some similar micro-pc for that. I don't NEED to virtualize anything on my machine. For any emergency I can fire a VM in one of my server or in a public cloud and reach a machine via ZeroTier or similar stuff. The iPad can act as an internet hotspot if the connection is missing in place.

Today at 12:05 EST one of my new NJ Server 2016 instances was booted. The server sees it as if the power was unplugged.

I opened a ticket and I am trying to find some insight. Haven't had a server reboot in Chicago data center before, but haven't run Windows Server yet.

I have this particular instance firewalled with an allowed connection from my WAN IP. So I don't know if it could still be an outside attach like I was getting before. Thought about turning on DDoS attack protection but hate to be wasteful if that's not the issue.

I have had a server kicked in Chicago before, but never without an email explaining something happened (not caused by my instance).

So i put the DBAN CD into a usb optical drive, and it does boot on these macbooks, and I can unplug it when it starts and move over to the next one. So it's working kind of like a thumb drive. So I guess that'll have to do.

Takes about 3 minutes of tech time to setup for each of them. Not too sure I could do any better with a different approach.

Burn a whole spindle of DBAN + the world's sketchiest power bar tree of death
