Yes, I like it more than FOG (though, I haven't used FOG yet) because I'm under the impression FOG is clone-based imaging only.

How can you say you like it more if you've never tried it?

Are you saying I should I like something that I haven't used yet more?

I think he's saying that "more" can't apply. Because you like MDT "X" amount, but FOG you like "null" amount. In math, you can't compare against a null, because it doesn't exist. No value, of X can ever me more likely to be "more" than a null than it is to be "less" than a null. Using the logic that you've never tried FOG, you can't say that you then like MDT more, any more than you can say that you like it less. There is simply no comparison.

      That was his point.

Otherwise we could interpret it at random. You love MDT, hate MDT, find it exactly the same as FOG... are all equally incorrect based on a null comparison.

Because I have read about Fog and seen some of it, it's not null. Therefore I am able to have some like or dislike and form an opinion.

Just like I never drove a Lamborghini, but still like them more than a VW Beetle which I've owned in the past.

The period notation is really annoying for me. I signed up [email protected] when it was in beta and this "feature" wasn't publicized. Years later someone else was able to register [email protected] and now I get DoTerra order details and the like. I have no idea what I don't get at this point.

Don't know about a period notation feature. What does that do? And how do that not break email globally?

The same way that + doesn't break it. It is outside of the RFC altogether. So as long as wtf ever service you sign up for lets you type it, then you can do it.

As for what it does. Well [email protected] is a common thing. But someone that signs up to gmail with [email protected] can also receive email from email sent to [email protected] or even [email protected].

Google simply ignore all periods on the left of the @ for gmail based email addresses. Gmail only, not GSuite.

Wow, that's.... weird. I guess it works until they do something like the story above and screw it up.

@scottalanmiller said in Verifying MS SQL Server 2017 Licensing:

@jaredbusch one of the complications is that there IS no virtual core. vCPU is NOT core.

a vCPU has vCores. Always. It might just be one. That is how it works.

Not in any system I've seen. What people call vCores are actually vCPUs. The vCPU might tell the OS it has multiple cores, but the idea of a vCore has never existed, only vCPUs. Vmware, KVM, etc. all the same. Core means physical, it's like having a physical virtual, it cancels itself out.

I am almost certain that VMWare lets you make a 1 CPU VM with 2 cores.

      Hyper-V just says virtual processors.
      0_1536703623096_9bebc766-93a2-498e-aa75-f621eb5bb0da-image.png

      KVM says CPUs.
      0_1536703642847_0252def6-e3e4-40f0-93ec-98417b2bb6ff-image.png

But I very clearly remember some hypervisor letting me specify a vCPU and vCores.

XenServer and XCP-ng also allow this.

      1cpu 2 core etc.

Topology lets you state presented cores, not vCores. Totally different things.

yum-cron and dnf-automatic do not use postfix or any other MTA. They simply open and send with a direct SMTP connection by default.

And how about SQL server express? It's was likely the 2008 version.

Should I anticipate any big changes there or is it likely that the SQL will run the way it is?

BTW, I saw that SQL Server Express 2017 runs on linux as well?!?

      Yup, runs on Linux.

      You've tried it right?

No, still a bad product that I think you'd be crazy to deploy under normal circumstances. 90% of the cost of SQL Server is SQL Server itself, not running it on Windows. Running it on Linux helps, but retains the core problem of paying an outrageous fortune for a system marginally better than free alternatives - and ones that are easily managed as part of the OS platform. Why do all the maintenance of SQL Server when you can do PostgreSQL essentially maintenance free?

And when you are talking a $50,000 deployment because SQL Server might be slightly faster... take a fraction of that money and put it into better hardware for PostgreSQL. I think PostgreSQL will be faster for cheaper, even if not faster in code.

SQL Server is a great product, but is encumbered by lots of licensing complexity (ergo risk) and incredibly amounts of cost. The Express version is free and that's fine, but why create technical debt rather than avoid it?

So it never really comes up.

Hmmm, sounds like one of those "MS messed up" scenarios we were discussing in the backup thread(s).

Yes, but it's also a "it didn't lose them their data" because they had local copies, scenarios we were also discussing. So a good example of both.

Actually it sounded like MS found them and put them back.

Local copies would also have been removed if they were "deleted" at the MS side.

Good point. The real problem here is the "customer shaming" that MS always does. Anytime MS is at fault, they try to shame the customer. Whether it is through official channels or "look the other way" as their engineers go into communities and do it. MS employees are out there attacking any customer that dares to mention that they've had a problem.

Like in this thread. Even once MS had admitted the mistake, and fixed it, an MS employee was still on the offensive trying to shame the customer and went ballistic once it was obvious he didn't even know how MS products worked.

O365 licenses are based on need. One person might just need email, another might need MS Office 2016, etc. You have to know the needs for each role. But because you need access to things like documentation even for an intern, it's rare that you can have many, if any, people at lower tiers than others.

@openit said in What are necessary/worthy/affordable tools for SMB?:

., does it mean we need to leave these things since we don't have tools? Are these tools really worthy for this size of company? are they necessary?

Considering these tools charge per user (albiet with steeper discounts at scale) I'd argue SaaS solutions make a LOT of this stuff more accessible tha never before because it removes the expensive part (Staff trained with enough time and competence to deploy/manage them)

How many of this specific type are priced this way?

We have Office 365 essentials for email, but no additional tools like spam filter.
Spam filters are licensed per user.

We have general antivirus ESET, but no specialized anti-malware, anti-ransomware, anti.....
      Licensed per user

We have firewall, but not additional add on like Outbound filters, etc.....
This I don't get as outbound firewall rules don't charge money, but if you want micro-segmentation per user that's a thing.

We don't have vulnerability scanners, commercial tools to monitor heartbeat of machines and network devices, no opendns kind of service etc...
DNS services can be priced per user, and monitoring like thousand eyes are per poll

I've used cpanel/whm many times in the past and quite like cpanel but just chosen to use what I use, obviously if you don't want to worry about updating your VPS and don't want the hastle then just use regular web hosting.. I'm just stating what I use in the thread and by no means giving advice to use what I use.

We moved all the way from ASO to paneless because we found it to be the least effort. The panel seems to create more effort than it removes. For us at least.

So we didn't figure out a good explanation for the exact issue. We did discover that the customer left devices plugged into the modem forcing Cox into DHCP instead of static causing all kinds of issues.

The purpose of the "ECHO" is to prevent the other party from hearing himself (echo). If a user is using headsets, then there is no need for AEC since there will be no echo generated on his side. In this case it might be better to disable "ECHO" to avoid unnecessary audio filtering and also to save CPU. A user that is using hands-free mode, MUST have "ECHO" enabled to prevent all other participants from hearing themselves. If ""ECHO" is enabled but still echo could be, it means that the acoustic echo cancellation software that is running is not robust enough to handle the echo. Following is a nice blog series on the principles and challenges of acoustic echo cancellation.
