@i3 said in Hyper-V Virtual Machine Remote Connection issue:

@Dashrender I did update the NIC driver. It is a Dell Server with Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit NICs. It originally shipped with a 16.0 driver version, I updated to 17.4 from Dell's site.

This seems to imply that the server came with an OS pre-installed. Is that right? This seems highly unusual for general best practices. If this is the case, perhaps a complete reinstall of the Host OS is in order?

@scottalanmiller I understand they are not standard business tools. I also look at it that if I can make a kiosk for $75 instead of using a machine that would have cost $200+ I look like a genius 🙂

Guess I just gotta learn some Linux commands and figure out how to get them to run if the unit is rebooted. I LOVE BEING AN IT GEEK 😏

Yeah, it's good gear for cheap. But more learning curve.

    I'm your Huckleberry.

But does that come at a cost higher than $125 to the company?

Learning is expensive and that's a really cheap way to do it.

But who normally pays for that learning? Good companies allow you to learn on the clock, bit not all projects allow for this.

And there is a difference in learning to learn and learning skills for the business.

While I get that some places would rather pay the $ to get it done right and fast. We are a school and if I can do it for a low cost and get to learn some things in the process then everyone wins in this case.

Sadly booting the system on another similar laptop didn't resolve the clean shutdown. And when I try to boot on a different computer, I get a Partition Table error.

So mounted as Read Only and am in the process of moving the user profile(s) to an external drive.

    sudo mount -o remount,ro /dev/sdb1 /media/username/Ubuntu

Is what I had to use.

Yes, Wine is included in the default repo of Ubuntu, so installing it from sources is a bad choice, and means you have to maintain it.

Although this may not address the issue he's having with this particular EXE on Ubuntu.

    More time for fishing?

Unfortunately not. I have a much longer drive to work, but now I am able to listen to podcast and watch Udemy Training videos.

Um... perhaps you should listen to the udemy training videos? Even @JaredBusch doesn't watch videos while he drives... Does he?

I mostly listen and sometimes I glance.

I used to read entire novels on long drives with my e-reader and the font set to ludicrous size.

    Did you wear plaid?

The most important question: Were you also at ludicrous speed?

Lol, this is no different than trying to use a 8 GB Android device. Those things are super painful.

Im just playing devil's advocate here.

As Scott often says. When you choose to use a platform, you need to fully buy into it, or you just end up in a bad way. In this case, the mini tablet appears to need more storage than your device comes with to allow for updates, etc to work as intended.

I have one of these devices, different brand though. It does what I need...

@Dashrender said in Amazon Echo vs Amazon Dot vs Google Home:

Considering the complete and utter lack of security in almost anything that actually allows remote control (i.e. JB and his cameras that demand UPNP open ports for the world - thank you NO) I currently refuse to use any of that stuff.

That said, I do have an Amazon Echo - after hearing Scott say how cool they are - and now I just sit back and wonder why. Sure I have it play Amazon music on it's crappy speaker (ok a dot could fix that) 1 time a month on average, I ask it the weather about 2 times a month on average... Otherwise I'm constantly annoyed, almost nightly by it saying "I'm sorry Dave I didn't understand the question I heard" while watching a show where no one said Alexia.

I guess my wife and I have asked it a question here or there, but it fails to know 9 out of 10 times and we fall back to google to get the answer.

That is the other thing I do like about the Google Home vs the Amazon equipment. Google seems to be much better at answering general questions, and you can ask it follow-up questions, something the Amazon Echo/Dot is lacking. Also, even if Google hasn't fully integrated all their services with it yet, I have zero doubts they will in the future. I'm leaning more towards the Home at this point, tbh.

You can do soft blocking using DNS. You can do hard filtering using Squid.

I never signed up for that.

I seemed to remember a few people saying "hell no am I providing them that info" ... so stayed away.

Let me know how things go for you with that service... Maybe I will sign up.

This is a really hard question to answer. Especially as IT is so large and broad. What is hip and current in the SMB is old hat in the enterprise, for example.

@scottalanmiller I know this is the issue in the phone i have moved only but the issue comes that is the different thing i seen the phone now

No, it's not an issue with the phone

You MOVED the files. Not copied. That means ONE SINGLE instance of the files.

You then deleted said Instance of the files.

Then you're surprised there isn't a copy anymore..?

Just because the photo's show up in your photo's app doesn't mean they're not on the SD Card. If it's a decent Android it keeps showing the files in the same way, just moves the physical location. So either you moved it and deleted it, or you didn't move it and deleted it anyway. There is no other answer.

Solution: Did you have a backup to a PC? Google Drive? If not, then you might be out of luck.

Yeah, annoying that it tries to run that when it is unnecessary and doesn't work. Could always track down the script and limit when it is run. But once you know it's just pointless errors, it's not a big deal.

Also the needs of a SAN are different than the needs of a LAN. So you likely want different switches. I'd love Netgear Prosafe unmanaged on my SAN but would generally prefer Ubiquiti EdgeSwitches on my LAN.

Any opinion on Unifi Switches yet?

We use one in the lab and it's been great, but we aren't pushing its limits or anything.

@Ambarishrh said in Scoop- Chocolatey alternative:

How is Scoop different to Chocolatey?

Doesn't pollute your path. Where possible, Scoop puts your program shims in a single directory and just adds that to your path

Doesn't use NuGet. NuGet is a great solution to the problem of managing software library dependencies. Scoop avoids this problem altogether: each program you install is isolated and independent.

These two seem to be at odds with one another - if not, please educate me.
I suppose the "where possible" is the exception ; 🙂
