@travisdh1 Oh, download also, we are on a 4Mbit/s symmetric HDSL link 😕 .

I'd give my left leg for a 4mbit symmetric. Our two locations have 10mbit/1mbit and 768k/356k respectively.

Wow, so I think anything cloud-based is ruled out for you… HDSL is not cheap, we are planning for a dedicated 10/10 FTTH link, abou the same price.

Ruled out by available internet connection and owners, yep.

well I can talk to a service provider who has migrated, a few have - but we simply haven't done any huge migrations yet. Most of that is because big installations usually move slow - nobody wants to be first. Not that upgrading is a big deal, it is the same as an upgrade of course. In a way, once ownCloud does a new release customers should be more worried about that than about upgrading to Nextcloud... But yeah, how to explain that 😉

We will see what Nextcloud 11 brings, people might find compelling reasons to upgrade at that point.

Did anyone ever figure out if there was a way to setup files for firewalld? Or was the XML service files the way to go?

      XML I think.

That's what I was afraid of. We're using IPTables on all of our OEL7 servers right now but I think moving to the default firewalld may be a good idea. I'll have to look into the XML config and see how much more difficult, if at all, it is over the IPTables file. It's a shame we can't just copy a single file around anymore but the XML files probably won't be too much more difficult.

Ya it's not bad at all. Here's the config from my Identity Management server. It's pretty similar to /etc/sysconfig/system-config-firewall on RHEL 6, just in zone specific XML files.

      <zone> <short>Public</short> <description>For use in public areas. You do not trust the other computers on networks to not harm your computer. Only selected incoming connections are accepted.</description> <service name="http"/> <service name="https"/> <service name="ntp"/> <service name="dhcpv6-client"/> <service name="kerberos"/> <service name="ldaps"/> <service name="ssh"/> <service name="dns"/> <service name="ldap"/> </zone>

Those services are predefined right? You can also build your own services via the same process.

Ya and you can define specific ports. I prob could have grabbed a better example.

No, I think I've got it just need to investigate actually setting these up.

But now regarding this setup , if the user login on a machine and saved his files on his home directory , when he logs again on other machine he will not get his files , so how can we make all user's files saved on the server and the client just is mounting his home directory ?.

If you set up an NFS server and use ipa-client-automount you can set it up on the client. You have to set up the auto mount in FreeIPA first though. For home directories you will want to use an indirect mount.

now i have configured the NFS to export the /home in the same server of the IPA Server ,
should i use the autofs configuration on the client or just the command ipa-client-automount ?
also what i should do from the ipa server ?

Dont do the manual set up on the client. On the IPA server, under the automount tab just configure where you want the mount to come from. Then on the client run ipa-install-automount and it will set everything.

@Dashrender I did update the NIC driver. It is a Dell Server with Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit NICs. It originally shipped with a 16.0 driver version, I updated to 17.4 from Dell's site.

This seems to imply that the server came with an OS pre-installed. Is that right? This seems highly unusual for general best practices. If this is the case, perhaps a complete reinstall of the Host OS is in order?

@scottalanmiller I understand they are not standard business tools. I also look at it that if I can make a kiosk for $75 instead of using a machine that would have cost $200+ I look like a genius 🙂

Guess I just gotta learn some Linux commands and figure out how to get them to run if the unit is rebooted. I LOVE BEING AN IT GEEK 😏

Yeah, it's good gear for cheap. But more learning curve.

      I'm your Huckleberry.

But does that come at a cost higher than $125 to the company?

Learning is expensive and that's a really cheap way to do it.

But who normally pays for that learning? Good companies allow you to learn on the clock, bit not all projects allow for this.

And there is a difference in learning to learn and learning skills for the business.

While I get that some places would rather pay the $ to get it done right and fast. We are a school and if I can do it for a low cost and get to learn some things in the process then everyone wins in this case.

Sadly booting the system on another similar laptop didn't resolve the clean shutdown. And when I try to boot on a different computer, I get a Partition Table error.

So mounted as Read Only and am in the process of moving the user profile(s) to an external drive.

      sudo mount -o remount,ro /dev/sdb1 /media/username/Ubuntu

Is what I had to use.

Yes, Wine is included in the default repo of Ubuntu, so installing it from sources is a bad choice, and means you have to maintain it.

Although this may not address the issue he's having with this particular EXE on Ubuntu.

Unfortunately not. I have a much longer drive to work, but now I am able to listen to podcast and watch Udemy Training videos.

Um... perhaps you should listen to the udemy training videos? Even @JaredBusch doesn't watch videos while he drives... Does he?

I mostly listen and sometimes I glance.

I used to read entire novels on long drives with my e-reader and the font set to ludicrous size.

Lol, this is no different than trying to use a 8 GB Android device. Those things are super painful.

Im just playing devil's advocate here.

As Scott often says. When you choose to use a platform, you need to fully buy into it, or you just end up in a bad way. In this case, the mini tablet appears to need more storage than your device comes with to allow for updates, etc to work as intended.

I have one of these devices, different brand though. It does what I need...

@Dashrender said in Amazon Echo vs Amazon Dot vs Google Home:

Considering the complete and utter lack of security in almost anything that actually allows remote control (i.e. JB and his cameras that demand UPNP open ports for the world - thank you NO) I currently refuse to use any of that stuff.

That said, I do have an Amazon Echo - after hearing Scott say how cool they are - and now I just sit back and wonder why. Sure I have it play Amazon music on it's crappy speaker (ok a dot could fix that) 1 time a month on average, I ask it the weather about 2 times a month on average... Otherwise I'm constantly annoyed, almost nightly by it saying "I'm sorry Dave I didn't understand the question I heard" while watching a show where no one said Alexia.

I guess my wife and I have asked it a question here or there, but it fails to know 9 out of 10 times and we fall back to google to get the answer.

That is the other thing I do like about the Google Home vs the Amazon equipment. Google seems to be much better at answering general questions, and you can ask it follow-up questions, something the Amazon Echo/Dot is lacking. Also, even if Google hasn't fully integrated all their services with it yet, I have zero doubts they will in the future. I'm leaning more towards the Home at this point, tbh.
