I don't know, those are definitely the standard initials for Scott Alan Miller. Coincidence?

I definitely think @scottalanmiller every time I see SAM, lol.

I knew that I couldn't be the only one.

Just modify the image and change it to CUT BUSINESS SPENDING by 30% ... lol.

@crustachio said in What Tablet to Buy for $70?:

@alex.olynyk I can't remember specifically. I know there are differences depending on which model Fire you have. I have the plain jane, bargain basement one, it was like $30 last year on Black Friday. I think it's just called the Kindle Fire, not the HD. Anyway, I used instructions from XDA forums. Wasn't too bad. The Fire HD's could be completely different beasts.

We have that too, four of them in fact. They were $35 I think. $50 is full price.

Thankfully just a PERC, so pop out the old one, pop in the new, enjoy your coffee.

I know we've been over this before, but is there any way to ensure that doesn't blow a second drive? Or is that mainly age related, with a little bit of bad luck thrown in?

Ensure? No, that's never an option. But replacing a drive in mirrored RAID (RAID 1, RAID 10) does not increase the risk of another drive blowing. That's part of parity RAID, not mirrored. So you protect the "other" drives from blowing my choosing mirrored RAID from the outset.

I like to build "Internal networks" with some servers on "one side" and some servers on the "other side"... and put VyOS or pfSense, etc... between the two.

[Generally, I do this with VirtualBox on my laptop, but this setup also works well in Hyper-V]

I patched mine with the Ubuntu 16.10 patch and it seems to work beautifully now.

You're like the Android people who keep talking about having a removable battery.

@BRRABill Even more annoying, I have a Lumia 950 XL Windows 10 Mobile phone and it has a removable battery too. :thumbsup_tone2:

I think the blame sits with using it a few days too long.

The glass isn't half empty or half full, the glass was too big.

Yes I suppose that's correct. I should have retired it sooner, but it was for me a bit like that Seinfeld episode where Kramer takes a new car for a test drive and wants to see how long he can go with the tank on E.
Also, someone(s) who worked here from 2010-2015 should have done that way before I started. But they(all of them) didn't do anything, for nearly ten years.

If you replace the PSU's proactively every 6-8 years servers should go for a very .... very... long time. Especially with older stuff where electron migration is really a non-issue. Can even replace the caps on the mobo with a soldering iron, testicular fortitude and $5 worth of parts.

Problem is, that not every bad capacitor looks like one. Could also be a cold soldering point, for example.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldering https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guide-excellent-soldering/common-problems

And be extra cautious when handling large capacitators found in in PSUs or HiFi devices: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/captest.htm#ctsaf, http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/safety.htm

At least it's not the old CRT tubes! We didn't learn to fix the things in school, but we learned all about needing to ground the things out as soon as the outside case comes off.

Pops and I quit working on the CRT ones about the times the flat screens started coming down in price. It just wasn't worth it for all the hassle for dealing with the CRTs. I had one explode on me while we were testing a repair job, ha ha.

Wow Veritas Backup Exec? are you sure? That was bought by Symantect like 8+ years ago. If you really have Veritas Backup Exec you have an ancient version.

Where have you been? Symantec spun Veritas out last year. That's why all of the Symantec people that we knew aren't there any longer.

Now that this is said.... I vaguely recall this news... Just forgot it.

Update: We prototyped integrating NoVNC with the Hypersocket VPN. It was relatively simple as it hooked straight into our forwarding mechanism that was already using websockets. Will be releasing an update to support this in the next month or so. We will also integrate our client-less SSH terminal at the same time. RDP is a little more complex so will need further research before we can support this.

Very cool, thanks for the update!

Hello from SpiceWorld Austin 2016! The welcome session just wrapped up so I wanted to take a second to provide the full recap on the product improvements and new tools that were announced on stage this morning.

Zooming out, our focus has always been to develop the tools and resources you need to do your job better - every day. For example, over the last year you’ve seen us rapidly develop a series of new butt-based tools including Butt Help Desk, Port Scanner &Tester, Subnet Calculator, Butt Cost Monitor, Blacklist Check and IP Reputation, and others that are purpose-built for the task at hand and incredibly easy to get started with, allowing you to get value from them immediately.

The response to our new tools has been incredible, and we’re looking into new and exciting ways to add even more value to your day. For instance, we’re working to better integrate our butt-based tools with the Community to provide a seamless experience that not only helps you manage your environment but also connects you with the relevant content and people who can help you tackle whatever comes your way.

Below, check out our updates to current tools, as well as our upcoming tools, including the Spiceworks IP Scanner, Internet Outage Heatmap, and next-generation Traceroute tool. We are also updating our apps, our product pages, and introducing a multi-OS agent.
