I just write an article about that here: http://www.francescoprovino.com/2017/04/16/full-disk-encryption-unlocking-from-virtual-serial-tty-paranoia-xenserver-and-libvirt/ .

I have a HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF as my XS 7.0 test box. Works great!

I don't see any issue with a lab box being PC based.

Yeah. My "oh s***" box is a Dell T3500. It stood in for the server while it got upgraded to XS7 from XS6.

@scottalanmiller Alternatively you can install XS6.5 on the smaller partition and then upgrade.

      This however has downfalls.

There is also a way to install XS7 on a smaller partition, but Citrix does not recommend it.

AND WE KNOW TO FOLLOW WHAT THEY WANT! 😉

I'm sure I've used something like Acronis Backup and Restore in the past for trouble machines, when restore they have a "dissimilar hardware" option.

Right - I was using the tools I had available at the time. XenConvert hasn't been officially supported since VS 6.2 or earlier.

I did solve the problem though - one that seemed pretty common - though as @hobbit666 mentioned - third party utilities apparently do often help resolve these problems sometimes.

Since the Dell fanboi's hijacked this thread (jk 😃 ) I'm going to start another thread.
Actually have some good info for those of us non-Dell users.
      I use SuperMIcro.

Is there anything about Dell on here? Dell was mentioned, but nothing Dell specific was said. All of the info applies to SuperMicro as well. IPMI is used instead of iDRAC. And the PERC software and the LSI MegaRAID software is the same. Only difference is branding.

@coliver I configurd XEN to pull time from us.pool.ntp.org, and I guess I'll just go into the primary DC and tell W32time to sync with the same server

I'm trying to recall but @JaredBusch has had issues with the US NTP pool. He may be able to comment further. Otherwise this should work fine.

When would you NOT want to thin provision?

And are you saying if it is over 2TB you cannot thin provision?

That's the issue, thin provisioning is limited currently to 2TB or smaller volumes (VHDs.)

Wait, is it 2 TB volumes as in ext3 partitions or is it 2 TV VHDs?

      VHDs.

That was another thing people are always clamoring about with XS ... the lack of VHDX.

Which I think is ridiculous that it's not in 7. VHDX is over 4 years old. Even worse, QCOW2 is something like 10 (or more) years old, and has almost a 9 EB limit.

The limitation on the partitions sizes is because of the use of snapshot functionality. Imagine having a 9EB array and partition, and then trying to perform a snapshot on it.

VHDX has the same limit (or similar). No one would really have an image that size, but it would be compatible with every other system. And snapshots wouldn't take any longer. It creates a new file and writes to it and reads from the old one.

Would he really need to reboot if he's adding another 'disk' copying data the removing the old disk?

Depends on the guest OS and applications using said space.

So I was able to make another array, and was also able to make an SR on that array. It's still strange that I'm not able to use thin provisioning by default on install, but for now, it's working.

And if you look, that EXT3 type is on LVM. Hence the weird confusion 🙂

Yeah that, as I said, is what got me.

So, if you pick EXT is enables thin provisioning by default?
Yes. Because thin provisioning is not actually the option. It's actually just raw LVM vs file based. Files are thin provisioned. LVM raw is not. File based is being called ext3 here.
