Now integrating the PBX with SalesForce is a great idea, and can let it do lookups for CallerID or even cause the salesforce appmto issue a pop up or some such.

As I've done some research today, I believe this is the kind of thing they want -- specifically a popup with information about an incoming call.

Definitely would seem to be a PBX feature, not a endpoint device feature. A softphone is pretty much a desk phone just inside your computer via software only. I wouldn't expect a dumb phone on my desk to have this ability, but I would expect my PBX to maybe be able to accommodate this.

The only other option would be is if SalesForce is the PBX, but then, there's still a PBX involved.

You don't want that first rule. That opened it to everything. You only want the second.

      Bingo. Thanks!

This is missing a few: Protected access for admin over all files & PC's, Visuals (graphs) , Easy to use interface.

Here is what I have so far for important features outside of the standard. Do you guys see anything that is more important than another?

      Anything I'm missing completely?

This list is not complied by priority, however it needs to be ( my Boss asked me to make a list) so any / all input would be greatly appreciated.

@dave247 said in Questions about licensing issues after converting physical SQL server to virtual:

      Hi. New here..

I have a Poweredge R320 running Server 2012 R2 Standard which is running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (64bit). This server has always been a bit slow with often very high disk I/O. Performance has gotten worse over time and I believe it's due to the fact that it's disks are in a RAID 5, and the SQL DB has gotten larger over the years/had more use, etc.

Anyway, I wish to virtualize this system because our storage controller is RAID 10 with much better IOPs. We have 3x ESXi hosts, each with dual sockets and better processors than the R320 server as well, but I'm really only looking to improve disk I/O. This server is running a single Xeon E5-2440 0 (6 cores) btw.

I want to convert this system from physical to virtual (using vCenter Converter) and verify that there are no issues before we pay more money for licensing, assuming we have to pay to change # of CPU and cores. If there is an issue, I can just revert and we won't be out $. I am just unclear on if SQL Server 2008 actually knows when there's a hardware change and if it will stop functioning or something, or if the system will continue on without any issues.

      Thanks. Also, hi Scott.

When you use the converter, it creates a VM with the same hardware specs.
So the VM will have the same number of sockets and cores as the physical box. There is no licensing issue there.
You will have to reactivate Windows, but again, not a licensing issue, just an activation.
Prior to running the converter, run a backup and shut down the SQL services so that no database files are open just to be safe.
I have done it live with no issues, but the butt cheeks were clinched.

Another thing I was thinking about was using a plugin I've used in the past (Pretty Link) to just do it on my own website backend.

      https://wordpress.org/plugins/pretty-link/

It's a bit more work than something like bit.ly, but probably better in the long run.

@scottalanmiller I could've sworn there was a post here related to a reboot solving it

Someone mentioned rebooting to try to solve it. But it did not (had already done that.) It was real files causing the issue, nothing orphaned. Literally, we were making 30K files an hour or so.

      Tiny files to, right?

That is not relevant except for that fact that large files would have filled drive space and likely been noticed.

How is that not relevant? more files = more inodes being used

Size of the files is not relevant.

It actually makes sense that @scottalanmiller said it was mostly directories. Files of any size will almost always run out of drive space before inodes run out in 99.9999% of situations. This is the first time I've actually heard of this happening, ever.

Only not relevant for those who actually know about inodes already. The only reason I even know about them is they got mentioned in SGI's IRIX Sysadmin courses.

The one major exception is marker files. "touch thishappened" as a file automatically and never clean up and you are using inodes without using any space. That's who you can easily learn about inode depletion. But who does that?

People writing bad scripts that use lock files and forget to remove them.

That wouldn't create enough to do this though.

If you start using configuration management tools to manage infrastructure with code you get the chance to see some of these one-off oddities in the wild a little more frequently than you'd expect. Like having Java developers not use Java's log facilities to manage log rotation, and then having a generic log rotation configuration completely bork things by delete application logs that are still being accessed by the Java application.

I got to see this issue a few dozen times a few months ago before another of our Engineers disassociated the Java applications from our generic log rotation recipe.

Rebooting was the quick fix for us prior to fixing the actual problem.

Oh wow. Everything I have is managed with Ansible ( I can't even log in to servers), however all of the devs use Oracle APEX on separate systems so they don't really touch anything on my stuff. I'm sure I'd have it much worse if I had to manage their stuff.

@coliver Next cloud is such a sore subject for me. Why they won't do it:

They won't spend the maximum of $15 a year on a domain for us to use for it. so I said we can just create an a-record for nc.domain.com and port forward to our Next Cloud instance. I can even do the SSL certification for free. Management says no. Why? Because the guy who runs the website doesn't know how to do that. I'll do it. No, you can't. Why? Because you can't.

      It's actually infuriating

That's fine you've presented it to them and they've declined. So move on.

Yeah it's just annoying that they don't want to save themselves money. The city has so many dropboxes they are paying for right now and then ask us to come up with a solution that saves them a ton of money, but they refuse.

      /rant

So the next time they are whining about drop box costs, tell them, we have a solution ready to bang out, it only costs $x and will take me 2 hours to get up and running - etc.

It's sitting on one of my hyper-v hosts, 100% ready. Only thing I need is the port forwarding and a-record. It would take 2 mins.

I had a look at UNMS and the installer is just pulling Docker image. That's a lot of moving parts and getting Docker to run in LXD is a challenge already, just too many variables. There's a feature request to have standard .deb installer.

I thought @JaredBusch posted a guide to installing UNMS in a Debian 9.1 VM on the forums just the other day. . .

Edit: Yeah he did, here is the guide.

Installing Docker in VM is quite different than installing it in LXD container. Think of it as installing Docker inside Docker.

If the drafters are so valuable perhaps hiring a min wage person to sort things will pay for itself?

If you don't have 12 trays today, then the number of trays is clearly not enough. Lol
