The reason we went with Fortigate over an Edge router, is that the Edge router couldn't do the IPsec bandwidth we were trying to hit. But mine is an NGFW with UTM bundled in. Could there been some other product that I dont know of that would have been better in our case?

ERL does nearly half of what you need...

      https://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeRouter/ERL-Performance-Testing-with-IPSec-VPN/m-p/1053799#M44593

ER and ERPro are so much more powerful. The ER Pro has 2x the CPU power, and 4x the RAM. We'd expect it to be able to saturate your lines no problem. Of course that is "expect", but based on the ERL speeds, and that they run the same code, there is little doubt that it can push IPSec over 1Gig speeds.

      https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/edgemax/EdgeRouter_DS.pdf

Your link is what convinced me not to use the ER pro. the Pro's will only do <500 mbps at full capacity, its in the link you posted.

      Where in it?

Oh, I see. he mentions ER Pro in another post, then posts them without stating what they are in a thread on ERLs. VERY confusing.

A big benefit is Ansible Galaxy. Look over how everyone sets up their stuff. That will give you good ideas on what to try and how to start writing stuff.

no, I am saying that I could see that someone wanted to separate out their devices so each could have its own separate DHCP scope. I am not saying that this was a good idea, or that I would do it, just that I can see how VLAN's could be used to achieve that effect. Again, I am not saying this would be using VLANs correctly

      $411

Good for what it is. Still a bit of money.

I was under the impression that OBR was the way this should be done.

OBR probably makes sense at $411 to get around it πŸ™‚

I can’t tell if you are for it or against it, and what β€˜it’ is

$411 to get around putting everything in an OBR. If non-OBR was "free" we'd prefer it. Extra capacity, extra channels, that sort of thing. But it isn't free, it costs money. If it was $1 or $5, we'd basically always do it. But at $411, that's pretty steep. That is more than buying two SSDs on your own and doing it. So really doesn't make sense when just doing two small SSDs in RAID 1 isn't normally a good idea.

What enterprise SSDs are you buying where you get two for under $411?

No value in enterprise SSDs for a RAID 1 boot storage.

@dave247 here is a mental exercise to try (don't do this for real, just do it in your head...)

Go back and read the discussion. Then picture yourself printing it out, and handing it to your CEO for a review of your thinking. Ask him to look over the discussion and give his opinion, not of it UTMs make sense or not, he has no way to know, but of your approach to thinking about them. Would you be happy with him reviewing your "logic" behind spending so much money, spending so much time, and how you are looking to secure your business in the future. Are you confident standing behind your decision making?

Take the reverse. I'm completely comfortable knowing that my statements are public, my boss can (and does) read them, as do my customers. I feel confident that, regardless of if a UTM is correct in any given situation, that my logic, points, consistency, etc. speak for themselves and I stand behind them. I have no worries that someone to whom I answer, even if it is just other peers in the community, can look at this and will agree, perhaps not with my conclusions, but with my statements and logic.

Thinking of it as a private conversation between two people makes it far easier to lose perspective. Thinking about your decisions of this nature as being continuously reviewed by someone to whom you answer can help you step away and look at your logic with an outsiders view and can help force a perspective.

Do you feel that your reasons would hold up if someone whose money was being spent, and whose data was needing to be protected, was the one who was reviewing your logic?

Something to keep in mind is NGFW. Ubiquiti and Meraki, for example, are NGFW.

It looks like much of the market is already starting to cool on the UTM crazy and NGFW is taking off as the "next stage" of popular approaches. Basically a reversal of direction or marketing at least, even from the big players in the UTM space like Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco, etc.

Rather, you temporarily use a snapshot in order to create an image or backup, then the snapshot is deleted and merged afterwards.

That's called exporting a snapshot. There are cases where what you describe is the process. But it's important to understand that the resulting "image or backup" is called a snapshot still. And what you are describing is the process used to produce the snapshots that we are talking about.

Veeam, for example, takes snapshots, that's how it works. All non-file based backups are snapshot based backups.

File backups work from the filesystem level. Snapshots are the only way to backup from the block level.

Ya that makes complete sense. I don't know why I was thinking down that path.

      THIS ^^^^^^

      Seems pretty silly.

      So here is the question....

What threat do you perceive there being? How do you feel this device addresses that thread?

I don't really see any threat in the first place, and so that makes it extra hard to know how to assuage your fears. But how this device is supposed to help, I'm really unsure.

We have a public folder on Office 365 that is email enabled, the customer would like an auto-response from the public folder. I'm not sure if that is even possible.

Wouldn't that be an auto-response setup from one of the accounts that receives those emails?

Does that work with a public folder?

Yes, with Folder Assistant through Outlook. Otherwise you can create a rule for incoming emails through Office 365 to accomplish that too.

Yeah, seems... poor. Found this for doing it through Outlook, which would be unreliable and clearly not useful.
