The implementation of an Azure Stack would be something to get our heads around for the time being.

Hopefully it is better than the actual Azure system!

It is Azure, same thing, but you have a physical node on-prem. You pay for the hardware, and you get Azure a little cheaper, but it's fully managed by them.

It's really only for remote places with bad bandwidth imho.

Think like, needing cloud from an 18-wheeler in a remote location.

This sounds like a crappy version of the AWS Snowball

      Completely different.

This is like making your portion of the AWS cloud in-house, including the entire AWS stack.

Again, not too useful unless you are trying to bring the cloud to a remote location to avoid excessive latency or to somewhere the internet doesn't exist... like linking it to a satellite connection during a disaster or something.

There are other real uses, but that would be for bigger enterprises... for most SMBs, Azure Stack would never be a consideration.

Salt seems like the obvious tool for desktop administration to me!

And the thing is that automating desktop configuration has been the norm for longer than automating server configuration (at least in the Windows word), just with crappier tools.

Yeah, very weird that people don't see this. @QuixoticJeremy actually presented on using tools like Salt to manage desktops at MangoCon 2017 a few months ago.

No MangoCon 2017 videos up yet?

      Nicely done @dbeato

In this case, I may have resolved the issue. I created a new folder in the \server\share\path and Windows File Explorer showed it created fine. But, there was one folder that didn't show.

I renamed it and it appeared in the list, renamed it back, and it was still there. So - Could have been a folder UID issue? or something. But AORN - it's resolved.

      @emad-r

I just finished home lab setup with Apache + Centos + WebDAV
      On 1 machine
that is connected to 2 other glusterfs peers working in replication mode.

It felt good when everything worked as expected. and I can connect via WinSCP, and it recognizes passwords for users created by Bcrypt which I reckon uses Blowfish and over HTTPS which makes it very secure.

umm.. its lame abit that each folder/share you will need to define in it apache webdav.conf, but if you want to implement something manually that is the price you pay.

Other than that it is all good, you can create personal shares like HR , and other Public ones. And replication does occur by the underlying glusterfs.

I might need to investigate Wine again, when I tried it, things were rough to say the least.

I haven't run Wine in a while, but when last I tried, any app that needed SSL did not work. Browsers couldn't do HTTPS, any app that tried to do encryption or anything like that would fail... If they'd fix that a lot more games and online things would work.

Interesting, had no idea about this.

This is relatively recent as well, like in the Wine 1.9 & 2.0 branches.

Good to know, I was just debating on switching my gaming machine over recently, glad I didn't if this recent hiccup is going to cause issues.

Steam under Wine worked well, as did several of my games. But WOW did not.

It's neat because it is a rare test where basically only the kernel is different. So you really get to see Linux vs. NTKernel rather than artefacts of the entire stack.

You are entirely correct. The people like that it seems will not even consider anything else and would rather pay big license fees than learn other systems.

Not legal. You can't legally use Windows Server for production purposes without it being licensed.

Also I dont see any licensing options for file server role, FYI.

It's not a role. To license the use of any non-hypervisor functionality the license is a full Windows Server license.

So it's finally happening? I remember hearing they were going to be changing the license to allow for this sort of thing. All I can say is, that's a lot of licensing money you've been prohibiting.

Well I have downloaded Inkscape but haven't had occasion to use it much.

If you have other graphics programs to recommend I'm all ears.

Personally I really like the Corel products, they seem much more straight forward to use than PS. So I'm definitely not stuck on the PS side of things.
      I'm definitely a causal user

I prefer Inkscape if I can do it. Vector is so much easier to work with than raster.

Inkscape is awesome. Loads of professional work is done in that.

@coliver said in Why Does Windows Need Special SFTP Functionality?:

I've found OpenSSH on Windows to be missing some features that Linux has. It may be a Windows vs Linux thing but home directories and jails seem to be both missing. There were some others in the past but don't remember what they were offhand.

Those are not features of SSH. SSH doesn't have them on either platform.

That's fine... but that's one of the reasons we needed to look at a different SFTP server that allowed us to designate home directories and jails for users.

Seems like an odd functionality to want in your SSH server. Why do you want that on Windows?

If you're treating it like FTP, why wouldn't you want those things?

But FTP doesn't have those things, either. In both cases FTP and SFTP are just the protocols, but we are talking about OS functions. Why does SFTP need to be treated so differently from FTP is really the base question.

      My Favorite Ultra-VNC setup:

Not all issues can fixed from command line alas, thus this recipe:

      uvnc: file.recurse: - source: salt://uvnc - name: 'c:\salt\uvnc' - makedirs: True cmd.run: - name: 'c:\salt\uvnc\state.cmd' module.run: - name: firewall.disable

remeber to re-enable the firewall of the client when finished. (salt "client" firewall.enable)
you will need to create uvnc folder (get it from UltraVNC portable builds) folder in your Salt master, in /srv/salt

      in it :

      winvnc.exe

      UltraVNC.ini

      state.cmd

      SecureVNCPlugin32.dsm (Optional Encryption plugin)

Server_ClientAuth.pubkey (Optional Encryption server SSL handshake check)

And in the state.cmd put the following:

      taskkill /f /im winvnc.exe sc stop uvnc_service sc delete uvnc_service "c:\salt\uvnc\winvnc.exe" -install "c:\salt\uvnc\winvnc.exe" -startservice sc config uvnc_service start= demand ipconfig | findstr /i "ipv4"

And whenever you want to connect to client, run this in salt master:
      salt '172' state.apply uvnc

And you will see the IP of the client, you will need to match the IP and if you made any custom setting like port number/encryption plugin with vnc viewer and connect to client.
