I usually just copy/paste a Chocolatey install command that does it all at once. Everything else is on separate media that requires no install. Example, copy over games, import them in... such as into Steam.

I was going to mention... with Chocolatey tool choco list -lo just pipe it to a text file.

But that only gives you things installed through Chocolatey. Dustin's OP gives you everything installed through the normal Windows installer process (and registers the install).

I recall when chocolatey didn't use the windows installer process for everything - things are much better now.

It is package by package. Lots of things, through Chocolatey or not, don't use the Windows installer process.

I've not seen Chocolatey not register software installs in Windows, ever.

I have. Many times. Most of the time I think that it does, but it is not Chocolatey that does it when it does.

      With what software specifically?

Try installing Sysinternal tools, it will not register at all, that is one example. You can do so with Chocolatey.

I never installed that stuff anyways. That Chocolatey doesn't is nothing new.

I thought you wanted to know which applications would do that, but I guess I read wrong.

Veeam also has a Linux based recovery environment that can provide full recovery of Linux VM's into the HC3 system.

Unlike windows, the virtio drivers are already built in to the Veeam Linux Recovery ISO so there is no additional step required for it to see the disk to recover to ... so in this example, I just want to restore all of disk vda from the backup repostory to the blank vda disk.

In your situation, you may need to ask help from a Broken Android Data Extraction tool. It helps you extract data from a broken screen or dead Android phone.

We finally found the replication point and recovered the file. One thing I noticed working here is that the VM's are not named the host names. I looked for it for hours across all of our subdomains and could not find it. I had to go through each individual VM and eventually found it.

We still have some old Unix white beards that do this. It annoys the crap out of me. He just set up a server and called it Odin.....

That's all fine and good as long as odin.mydomain.net actually resolves to that actual server, lol.

Ya it just annoys me ha. Everything else is named by purpose.

Our one server... it got names Zues. Of course we knew it was going to be just the 1 server for the foreseeable future.

If you must use Planets, Greek gods, Mythical creatures, et al... Please make sure they are pselled correctly to avoid further confusion.

I don't understand the reason to do that over function. I'd much rather name a server WDS01 then Ptah01.

No substantial changes have been made during the last couple of weeks. Just a few new users and password changes plus maybe 2 or 3 new machine accounts. Some clients and servers now refuse to authenticate users during login due to the well known "trust could not be established between..." error.

Where you still getting those errors after you powered down the broken DC? I'm guessing not since you moved forward with the install of another DC.

Nope. Only "missing that other DC" errors now, which is fine. I've got some crappy internet connection (free WiFi in the train, next to no 3G/4G signal) here and can't check the current state. but it was fine half an our ago.

OK, reading your OP, it seemed that you were getting those errors after turning off the broken DC, but since you're not - seems like you found a good solution.

Does the VM I want to work from need to be offline?

      When attaching the disk? yes.

why? You can add new disks to VMWare while a VM is running without any issues. I'm pretty sure you can attach a pre-existing partition as well.

You can do the same in XenServer. At least with Windows as the guest. I haven't tried it with Linux.

You can't however do this if the source drive is running on a separate VM. (That VM must be powered off).

Which is what I did in order to do this.

Right, unless you unmount the source drive first. I don't even think VMWare can reliably do this.

VMware can do it reliably on its side, but it would still hose the data inside the drive.

Right, unless it's a cluster aware OS and Filesystem.

Just cluster aware filesystem. GFS2, OCFS, VxFS would all work fine.

The one big difference is that snowflake firms (or any size) tend to lean towards platform-based, agentless backups while DevOps firms almost never take platform-based backups because they have no need to ever restore a full VM, only the data.

MySQL seems to be completely hosed. I'm going to have to rebuild the server, as restoring from backups even a week ago, even at the VM level, is not working!
