I had a similar problem with a Lenovo laptop (again purchased before SuperFish). The user finally agreed to have me send it for service, no issues reported since then. It clearly had a hardware problem as I rebuild the OS at least twice before sending in for service.

@gjacobse we used to use DirSync but we phased out AD entirely. That was way better.

Maybe use @francesco provino blog post as a starting point
      http://www.francescoprovino.com/2016/09/06/xenserver-7-software-raid-with-mail-alert/

I think that needs a little fleshed out for the newbies.

But yes, that might be a good starting point.

The amount of storage you need in your backup appliance is totally based upon the backup methods and change rate of your data.

Assume you're doing incremental backups and that your daily changes are 10 GB, your original data is 6TGB, and your NAS is 12 TB, you'll be able to fit approximately 600 days of changes on there.

BUt there might be dedupe components, as well.
No idea about Dedupe components, I don't think I do have in my environment.

I don't know if it will do what you want, but worth looking at.

I've used it for a few things recently.

@scottalanmiller Yeah, I understand, things like RAID, Snapshots within the HDD etc. are not real backups. They are just for redundancy (RAID), performance (RAID), limited restore (snapshots).

That's all that Starwind is, in that case, is RAID. It's just network RAID.

I give them my recommendation. They pay for the work which keeps my job.

You might want to talk with them about who is running IT. If they are, ask them what they want to do. If you, do what is right for them.

@wirestyle22 said in Windows DNS best practice:

@Mike-Davis He is actually asking this in regards to my network. We have one root domain with two subdomains, all on their own subnets. How mine differs from the OP is both the primary and secondary DNS are in the main building attached to the root domain. We only use static IP's. There is no DHCP here. We don not even use wireless, although that will change in the near future.

What Wire didn't mention is that all servers and all clients in the entire organization use those two DNS servers at headquarters. That seems very odd to me.

FYI - Wire just came on with that client, so he didn't set this up.

      This is correct

Pretty sure that Ubuntu is fully firewalled out of the box. Don't know anything that isn't these days (except for the famous 1511 issue.)

8 years old - yeah, Personally I fully expect failures at any time, just expect them, but am not unhappy when they don't happen either.

I put in 40 new VOIP phones 10 years ago, starting around 7 years, when we lost power long enough to take the switches down, we started having phone failures - they wouldn't power back on.

I actually was talking to @scottalanmiller about a related thing - stickion - when you turn off a computer with drives in it that when the drives stop spinning, they don't work anymore because the heads stick to the platters.

I'm not sure how often this really happens anymore, but it is a real thing. Scott said that the recommendation is to not allow drives to spin down in these situation when possible.

These 8 year running devices are just the same as my phones and those HDDs.

Do you know if you can disable config access on certain interfaces/ports on the erx?

You can restrict by firewall rules to IP.

You can leave eth2 off of switch0 and give eth2 a different IP block or restrict the IP block to something. But why? This is not a normal thing done with switches. They have config also. You still have to log in.

I was trying to figure out how to say this - JB's exactly right.

In fact you have options if you want to enable yourself to manage this remotely, not that you should probably ever need to. Set eth2 to an IP on your network, then plug that into your network, this assume you have a second cable from your switch to that room.

But really that's probably not necessary.

Fair point. Fair point indeed. lol. I will admit, I have a rule of thumb with inconsistent problems. If it's on a computer, first assumption is hardware.
For something like this, first assumption is Firewall, and more specifically NAT.

Now I didn't need to use a separate ISP for the Guest network, I could have setup VLAN trunking on the corporate firewall connection, and then setup rules inside the corporate firewall to split the traffic as desired.

Right - I was using the tools I had available at the time. XenConvert hasn't been officially supported since VS 6.2 or earlier.

I did solve the problem though - one that seemed pretty common - though as @hobbit666 mentioned - third party utilities apparently do often help resolve these problems sometimes.
