Another option would be to simply disconnect the network in the VM settings and then pass through a USB or something.

I've considered that in the past, but passing a generic USB through without a PCI card in between in a major pain.

It is simple on ESXi and generally not a problem on Hyper-V. I still do not have my home office setup to bring XS7 online yet, so cannot say there.

That is assuming you have physical access to the hardware.

Same with KVM. Just plug it in and pick the USB device.

Hmm. Can't select the correct answer again. Weird.

I was able to do it on one of my own posts in a thread i made. Can you select one of your own as BA? That would narrow down the issue.

Ya I'm able to select my own. This happened the other day also. I could select my own but no one else's. An admin had to select the correct answer.

That means it is an issue with permissions. Either a bug or incorrectly setup permissions on users in the plugin.

connect a windows/linux machine and see if those get the DHCP assignments. If not, are you sure the server is handing out IPs?

It was, but it doesn't matter at this point. I've changed my project.

Just going to perform a clean XS install onto some hardware, and make a copy of my working VM into that.

This system hasn't been used in 6-8 months so trying to dig into it is worthless. (also its bare metal install)

@coliver said in TPB planning to use drones:

I wonder why they aren't using LTA drones for this. Google was proposing this for Africa just suspend neutrally buoyant balloons with GPS so that they can remain in place with some lightweight electric motors.

I thought that Google's were going to drift and needed a lot of them because of that. Google was not trying to remain in international waters.

I think you're right. They had a means of using GPS and electric motors to anchor them in place but that wouldn't help in a lot of instances in the continental US.

Those balloons use the small electric motors to pump more normal air into a compartment inside the balloon to descend, and pump air out of the compartment to ascend. Just by moving into different air currents, it's feasible to keep a balloon withing a limited airspace (assuming you can change altitude, which normally means staying well above airline cruising level.)

Does that allow the user to sudo without having to enter a password?

      Correct.

In larger teams, you normally have 24x7 staff. So the reboot schedule goes to the current shift to monitor. It's only shops that lack round the clock scheduling that have this as a real issue, and if you don't have 24x7, shouldn't you be outsourcing to a shop that does if you really need that at all? I think that this normally (maybe not always) becomes a problem when you are dealing with layers and layers of other problems like not having enough IT staff to properly staff a department without causing unnecessary cost and risk and choosing not to outsource to an MSP/ITSP that could do this cost effectively.

@Seitan said in Has Anyone Played with KVM-VDI?:

@dafyre yes, you can create regular machines - they are called "simple machines". But still KVM-VDI is more vdi oriented.

Since the KVM market lacks a good, solid, standard GUI management option like XenServer has in XenOrchestra, that might be a spot that KVM-VDI makes more sense than you might think at first glance.

That is why I was asking. I've got WebVirtmgr on my hosted system and it's... okay. It does the job, at least.

Opening up RDP access (not necessarily from the Internet) but in general just opens more ports, more firewall changes etc.

Sure, but granting unnecessary access to the console does that, too. You need access to the VMs from far more places than you need it to the console.

@GuillaumeDelaporte So essentially any application that wants to be built using OpenIO (or any other Object storage) has to be prepared to build based around the REST API?

Yes, but applications and solutions which you can use are more and more compatible with this new style of storage (because it solves some problems you can face with other technologies).

And, of course, if you are building your own.

MangoLassi stores certain things in this manner, for example.

The discussion came up because we were copied on an email from one user to another where they told the user to run out and get a cheap switch so they could hook up their network printer and their computer.

Well yes, bypassing IT for any purchasing, especially core infrastructure, is ridiculous.

Right, this has nothing to do with the type of switch.

I might implement a script like this. Care to share the script itself?

Not back in till Wednesday but it's a simple one so far

Asks for a hostname on a prompt and runs hostnamectl
Then asks for ip to assign and runs a few sed commands to edit the cfg-eth0 file.

So the main idea is to run the command/script when root logs in next.
