Wow ... it's been a month since I asked this!

From the responses, I guess there is a third little piece of this, in RMM and also how much I want control over my user machines.

In many ways, I was almost considering them all just having fresh installs, like they went out and bought a new laptop from Best Buy, and now want to attach to Office365.

The files will be there, they can collaborate. Do I really need to provide anything else?

We are currently using an RMM solution still so I can run scripts and assist remotely if needed.

Yes, I just talked to another friend who is a designer.

He said that basically the PMS color is "out of gamut" (the ! in the software) and the software does as good a job as it can to color match it.

That is why it is different, and it technically correct, or as correct as it can be.

The hex values are also apparently "web safe" colors. Not sure why they picked those, as I don't think it is applicable anymore, but what the heck.

Man ... learned a lot of graphics today!

Change the web safe colors to the closest instead. Web safe was way, way back in the days (about 20 years ago) when you had 8-bit color graphics adapters and you had to use a palette to spread those colors over the entire color spectrum.

Heck, that was so long ago this was a trip down memory lane for me...

Anyway, in the case of the CPA we are talking about material that is not really sensitive at all.

The data files could be secured the same way as any paper records. Locked in a safe when not in use.

That would be the same as being encrypted, since the lock on a safe = encryption and the physical key = the passphrase to decrypt the drive or data.

Well, in principle only. You can walk away with the encrypted computer but it would be harder with the safe.

In most cases physical security is about delaying. You can smash and grab a laptop from the office window but it would require a lot more time to break in properly and then open a safe before someone shows up.

You have those examples a bit mixed up.

The comparable scenario would be "getting to the data" The physical medium housing that data doesn't matter.

You break the lock, you get the data. If you break the encryption key you get the data.

But a physical lock is likely easier to break and get into whatever than it would to decrypt a encrypted volume.

      Reminds me of this classic:

Decent ARM processor and 4GB RAM, 16GB storage.

      Isn't that all Chrome books?
So chromebooks are set up bare minimum?

All in what sense? They don't all come with those specs, no.

I guess, all of the chromebooks i've seen are extremely similar in specs.

Do they? 2GB - 16GB RAM is a pretty wide spread. As wide as you realistically get on any other laptop range.

What would you need 16GB of RAM on a Chromebook for?

What do you need it in anything for? Running apps. Chromebooks are just a computer like any other.

Isnt chromeOS based on Internet use?

What does that mean to you?

Most everything you would do on ChomeOS would be based on the internet through google chrome web browser?

Sure, the same could be said with Windows, Linux, or macOS. Almost everything that any one does today is like that. That's just "modern computing" and is not special or unique about ChromeOS.

      Fair enough.
I didnt think it was all that special because Like you said, You can do that in WIndows linux, macOS.

ChromeOS isn't all that special, it's just a highly locked down version of Linux. It's light and fast. What makes it special is that it can run the widest selection of Linux apps (standard Linux apps, and Android apps), and uses Chrome itself to build the desktop which lowers the total system overhead by not needing two subsystems, one for the desktop rendering and one for the browser - it uses the browser for both.

      gotcha!

What's keeping the company from at least migrating the domain controllers? That's actually one of the easier services to migrate.

I've sometimes seen 2003 with legacy applications that management does not want to change for whatever reason. Just not with DCs.

I don't remember, but in any case XS reading/writing to the USB killed your boot device

I guess it just seemed odd to have it there, to serve up a listing of files.

I guess if no one can me can get to it, it's not a concern. But then, why put it there? Or only put it there for the users with access to it.

Well then, with that logic, why click on it?

I like to see what can break.

      I mean for the users.

I set up multiple archive policies and let the user do what they want, if they want. Nobody has reached the max capacity yet, and if they do, it only effects them.

We try to push for good user email organizational habits.

If they fail and it causes outlook issues, then we suggest they archive old stuff.

Another thing I was thinking about was using a plugin I've used in the past (Pretty Link) to just do it on my own website backend.

It's a bit more work than something like bit.ly, but probably better in the long run.

So to sum up ... one of the XS7 updates hosed the NIC on my XS, but only with Linix VMs. Windows VMs worked fine.

A new NIC (with the Linux VMs using only that NIC) fixed the issue.

NextCloud requires either the use of a local sync client (not tenable for huge network shares) or web based file sharing. I think WebDav might work - but I'm not sure anyone here has gotten it to work.

I got it working without to much fuss. Maybe I'll redo that and do another how-to post on it.

But even if you do get it to work, this is still a horrible solution - because it's really no different than old SMB shares, whatever infects your machine can still encrypt all the data the user has write access to.

You have a damned complex about this. Get over it.

The best solution technically is almost never the best solution for usability.

Yourjob is to balance those for the business need.
