I use teams, even if there is only one NIC in the team most of the time, because I can add and remove NICs without impacting the higher layers.

Good idea. This server I just got has the onboard GB NICs, but also 2 dual port Intel GB NICs as well. I could create a BIG team if I wanted.

@fuznutz04 I have not. But as you are seeing, FreePBX 14 and newer are not CentOS anymore. They are Sangoma OS.

I am sure some manual setup would work as most things seemt to be ported, but no idea.

The only extra thing I have added to FreePBX is ZeroTier.

Good point. I will post some notes as to how well this works out. I was at least able to install it successfully.

Those $2.50 instances makes its impossible to install Fedora without using the one Vultr provides.

Set it to PCI 1.2, that disables TLS1.0, all the AES stuff, etc. etc. You can also disable them manually in the first screen.

      Great, thanks.

@black3dynamite Ah yes, SLAT. Almost forgot about that. I ran into that trying to install HV 2016 on a REALLY old box for testing. I could install it, but that's where the story ended.

If I get the E5620 or higher in the Xeon family, I think I should be fine. I know for sure that the E5620 works. I have them in my R710.

The same thing happened to me. So it made my decision to use KVM even easier for what I was using the server for.

@jaredbusch said in EdgeRouter "Smart" QoS issue:

@fuznutz04 said in EdgeRouter "Smart" QoS issue:

The ER-Lite boxes have a "Smart" QoS wizard. The way I've always understood it, it works as follows:

You fill in the line speeds of the service you are actually paying for.

      Example:0_1516985914606_QoS.png

The above screenshot is from my home, so the speed in the boxes doesn't line up with the rest of the details here, it's just and example.

So if you pay for 100/10, that's what you put in the boxes. I do this at the office, at home, and other clients. However, I ran into a situation where using the Smart QoS wizard, actually really limits the DL speed.

I did a speed test with the QoS setting ON, and got the proper UL speed, but was limited to 50-60 DL speed. As soon as I removed QoS, I got the proper speed of 100 DL and 10 UL.

Has anyone experience this before on the Edge Routers? Perhaps @JaredBusch ?

This is normal and expected because traffic policies and the smart queue policies both force traffic to not be offloaded.

The CPU in the ERL cannot process traffic faster than ~60mbps without the offload functionality.

Well alright then. Simple explanation. I’ve never run into this, because we have such slow speeds around here. So this would be an example where I could upgrade to the next model. Perhaps the ER4? I haven’t read the spec sheets yet on them.

Correct using a different model is what is required to obtain better speeds in this situation.

The ERX will perform better because it has a better CPU than the ERL. But it has less memory which leads to other problems.

The ER4 is light years ahead of the ERL by comparison due to the newer CPU.

OK great. Looks like I'll need to start recommending these now. First, I want to get one for myself at my office. Did you manage to get your hands on one yet?

@wrx7m The WD15 (USB Type-C) has been decent, but there's a huge shift in how it operates compared to the docks of old. First off, I had to change a couple BIOS settings to get it to work at all. Then when you hit the power button, you have to look at the lights on the laptop to even tell if it's on, then like 10 seconds later the monitors turn on and you can finally see Windows loading. I'm assuming that the downtime is because the drivers aren't loaded yet? Then the other weird thing is that the dock installs it's own ethernet adapter, completely separate from the one on the laptop itself, with its own MAC address. I ended up having to set a static IP on that interface because it wouldn't pull and keep a reservation I made for it for some reason, it would intermittently drop connections and then pull from the DHCP pool (we have a messed up process, don't ask lol). Other than those couple of things, it's been good.

      Why EXT4?

Is there something wrong using ext4 instead of xfs besides Red Hat/CentOS using it by default?

As with everything, reverse the question - is there something right about it? XFS is faster and more stable. What does EXT4 have going for it? EXT4 is not a bad filesystem, but "not bad" isn't a reason to choose a filesystem. Which one is best for your environment? I don't know any server environments where EXT4 is good enough to be considered - because it would have to be meaningfully better than XFS in some area for that to be useful.

Looks like I just need to read up on ext4 vs xfs.

Or just move on to XFS. It's a super rare case that you want anything else. Basically, always choose XFS unless you have a very clear reason to do something else. You'd have an edge case with your storage to want to even look at alternatives, and when you do BtrFS and ZFS are definitely more likely to be the case over EXT4, and JFS2, GFS2, OCFS, and others will compete heavily with EXT4.

Sure, but without reading up on all of those, he'll never know when to use something other than XFS, which is all I think he was getting at.

The point being, it’s a ridiculously special case. Approaching never.

@fuznutz04 Same method to fix bricked APs, that's how I have done it sometimes is not worth it if there is a part that needs to be soldered.

This experience solidified the fact that the Er-lite is just better. It has much more storage, so replacing firmware shouldn't be an issue. I think that was the whole problem. There was not enough memory to hold the new firmware file, and due to that, something borked itself.

It is supposed to delete the prior backup image before downloading the new one. So that should not be the issue.

Well then I'm not sure what the actual cause was. I performed the update as I normally do, but this time the upload failed. Oh well. I'm over it already. 🙂

Just happens sometimes. Used to happen all the freaking time in the 1990s.

Oh yeah, I've bricked a couple before.

Not really the same thing, but still counts as bricking: My first ever PC build...I was so excited, went to a computer show, got all the parts, built the thing, fired it up, and smoke poured out. I had a metal standoff in the wrong place, and it shorted the board.

Yeah, I read that 1709 completely changes the network stack. It's what supposedly causing my mis-reporting info for my AV and firewall.

My firewall had to be reconfigured so I can reconnect Hyper-V Manager to Hyper-V 2012 R2. I had no issue connecting to Hyper-V 2016.

What is your practice for log rotation? For example, the error log. If that grows (obviously indicating other issues) , and needs to be rotated, what procedure do you use to rotate logs?

Currently the third party vendor uses this:

      expire_logs_days = 10
      max_binlog_size = 100M

      In our MySQL instance.

What happened is that DOS era had the Ctrl-V and then around the NT era they moved to the Shift-Insert mode to match UNIX because everyone had conflicts in the CTRL keys. But MS left both options for people used to the old one. But lots of people still teach the old ones as the default instead of the new, which is the biggest issue, so things have not changed over time.

That explains it. Thank you! I was one of the ones that learned the old way.
