@fuznutz04 said in Custom IP tables rules for FreePBX:

@jaredbusch Awesome. I'm going to try this.

I was just about to followup with this, saying that I was able to get it working, by not using any custom rules at all. Since the IP that I want to allow, is my local office, which is where I want to connect to the mySQL data from, it works already. Reason: I have my local office IP listed in the Trusted Network area of the Responsive firewall.

Of course, to get this to work, you have to change the listen address (bind address) in the etc/my.cnf file to listen on your public address, other than the loopback address.

I would probably change it to listen on any to have one thing less to remember just in case something changes, but that is just personal preference.

Oh yeah, I did that actually. Then I created a user with select access to the crdb database. The root user by default, on FreePBX installations, has no password. However, the root user can only log in from the local server, so I don't see a need to implement a password. Unless I'm missing something....

@travisdh1 So on second thought, I'm thinking it might be a better approach to redirect the call recordings to the block device directly, without extending the LVM volume to the block device. So it would be like this:

Attach block device and create partition and file system.
Mount the new device to a new directory (/callrecordings)
In FreePBX, point the call recordings to this new directory.

This way, the VPS disk, is still completely separate from the block device disk. In my head, this just seems cleaner, and has less potential for errors if the block device is ever unavailable.

      Thoughts?

Yes, that makes way more sense.

The only thing that made me think of that was because about 2 weeks ago Vultr NJ had some issues with block storage. If they have an issue again, at least I could still boot the VM. (although I would have to remove the block device from the fstab. But then, It should boot fine I suppose. (crosses fingers)

You don't want that first rule. That opened it to everything. You only want the second.

      Bingo. Thanks!

Yeah, latency was utterly terrible. In-laws said they could watch Netflix on it but that would take most of their data allotted.

Yeah, once something actually got started, the speed was good. It's just getting anything started was really slow. It really didn't help that they had a data allotment of 2 GB and 8 people actually using it.

@fuznutz04 I agree, low orbit satellites have been an obvious target for any company with the means to get started with it for a number of years now. Can't happen fast enough!

So if it used to not be a wrapper, maybe Slack is cloning Rocket.Chat now rather than the other way around.

They both use Electron to provide their "desktop clients".

I knew that Rocket did. So Slack copied that from them?

Don't really know, I know they were using Electron for the windows app almost since the beginning and just last year change the mac version from MacGap to Electron as well.

I am figuring the $40 extra is worth it for consistency for an RDSH environment. On a web app or anything else that wouldn't bother me.

That's what I'm saying. Any time you are paying for "consistency" in IT, you should stop and really, really evaluate that. Consistency sounds good but is almost always a negative. It's like drifting in racing. It's not consistent, but it is how you get the best performance. Consistency is the enemy of performance.

@scottalanmiller and it stored in the same data center! So you still need an offsite backup of some sort.

Only if the concern is the data center going up in flames. It's a stateless device. Doesn't really hold valuable data.

@scottalanmiller - no whining with mine. I do have the first XPS 13 from the 2015 series, which had display problems (had to change it 2 times because of dead pixels you don't notice from the first glance on the 4K display)
But now the only noise I don't like is the Power supply infrasonic when I charge a powerbank through onboard USB. Shouldn't be a big issue since it seems to be only me who hears it anyway.
XPS13 is a great machine for doing everything on the go, the only downside for me is the 4K display with some Windows apps and dual display setups.

Distribution groups. Someone with a real email has to be a member to get the messages, but that is how you make a bunch of various addresses.

Do the domain's have to be setup at O365?

      Fixed it. Thanks @DustinB3403 .

Total face palm moment. When I setup backups a few months ago, I properly had XO backing up to a remote SMB share on another PC, with the share called Backups. At some point, probably during troubleshooting, I must have pointed the backup folder to just /Backups...which was located on the XO vm itself. I was backing up XO to itself.

      Is that like Inception?

Yeah, backing up to XO, while allowed, isn't ideal for this very reason. Glad we were able to resolve the issue.

For what it's worth, my $0.02

Decent air coolers (aftermarket) run about $20-30 and will beat the pants off a stock cooler. Overclocking you can get quite high as well.

If you have the cash (or extreme noise sensitivity) then it's worth going to closed loop liquid. H100i has been my go-to with good results but I can't help but say they're unnecessary and I consider them bling. edit to add they also require a more careful cleaning regimen (gentle + more frequent).

I might make the jump to one of those when/if I get a new case. But eventually, the noise won't even matter for me. My plan is to put my PC on the other side of my office wall, into a closet. Then I don't have to hear it at all.

Most people wear headphones so it's rarely an issue.

I did set one up for a lady who works from home on video editing and had tile floors. Echo chamber!

I'm with Jared, either DDNS or a central system that is static and sites that are dynamic. Are there cases for static IP at the office, of course. But I think that they are pretty rare these days and getting rarer.

Most folks who post issues regarding call quality (I'm guessing) need to scan your help files to implement QOS and bandwidth reservation ...

QoS for sure, although this only helps outbound call quality and can't affect inbound, but avoid reservations. Reservations aren't effective. QoS does a better job while not having the huge impact when not in use. Reservations really don't have any benefits but some huge caveats.
