Exactly. Job manager is "generic": it allows you to build complex planned stuff (like shutdown those VM during the night, and create another job to start them in the morning).

      It's very very generic.

Backup is a kind of specific planned job.

Of course now I'll have to repeat this process when I get a proper backup target, as this tiny crapbox I'm built on is only for testing.

Yeah, searching for NFS, not a VM was the first thing that came to my mind.

You should point out that XenServer is almost exclusively for quite small companies, not large ones. XenServer goes after the SMB market primarily. It is Xen without XenServer that tends to go after the big enterprise customers. Both play in both markets, but XS really is focused on SMB and Xen sans XS on the enormous cloud market.

But as such, those big clouds are used by nearly every up to date SMB. So almost everyone is running something on Xen even if they do not realize it. Xen is just about everywhere.

So I've waited about 30 minutes or so, much longer after the backup completed. I still have a snapshot called XO_DELTA_BASE_VDI_SNAPSHOT. Am I able to delete it and it not affect the backup or is the delta based off of the snapshot?

Did you every get clarification on this? I suspect this is needed for the delta backup.

Yes, it uses the snapshots to make the backups. That's what I figured it was doing, but since Dustin didn't see it I thought maybe something was wrong.

We resolved it in another thread, I can't remember which one at this point.

And while he did say in the OP he needed to backup 8 TB daily, yeah I didn't think that was likely, and wasn't surprised when we corrected himself on that point. But as of yet hasn't told us what he is rate limited to, nor what his daily changes are.

Though mentioning that they delete all the old changes - yeah I'm sure that's another miscommunication as well.

All of this leads me to think that he is trying to find written, public justification for something that he has been unable to justify himself.

It sure smells that way, don't it?

Yeah. It it looks like and duck and quacks like a duck. I totally recognize that I'm doing the "jumping to reading into their intentions" thing that I get called on a lot so I'm trying not to say that he's doing this... only that that is how it comes across and someone who was trying to falsely justify a known bad solution would do it in exactly this way. This is the pattern you would look for for someone who knows that they have done the wrong thing and have a bias and are trying to subtly inject false information to lead people away from the obvious path.

Doing it up front was one thing, but not acknowledging that his info was wrong and that obviously his logic doesn't hold up means we've left the really obvious "oops, I missed that detail" excuse window.

Well... plug-in downloaded source, compiled, installed and activated.
In "Setting/Plugins" I can see now the "backup-reports" and "transport-email" plugins.
I made some simple test with "Backup Jobs" and all seems ok.

      Thanks guys.

I recompiled from scratch on a new VM and have the whole process documented in the link just there.

So upon further investigation I've realized I'm a complete moron. So I created the local storage through the web interface. I thought that meant it was local to XenServer, but it was local to XO. So the backups are being saved to the container and not on XenServer. Disregard everything above, I'm just stupid.

Who knows how long this vulnerability was in place? Seems like they really wouldn't want to disclose that information or just don't know. Kind of sad for a security company.

This likens back to the Lenovo conversation. Are they malevolent or just incompetent?

Can't you run windows 10 on the Pine64.. as in the RT/ARM version. I remember them saying that was going to be free without needing anything at all

I'd have to go back and look to confirm. Not sure what I will use it for,.. I have about two dozen projects I think I would like to build - just not sure what route to go with any of them,...
