Firmware can update on it's own outside of the controller version being updated.

If the Controller is set to auto upgrade UAPs, that could explain why this happened considering you haven't updated the firmware on your own.

Discovered the APs aren't running the most up to date software, if it had updated. 'Upgrade' button is missing on the controller, for each AP. Guessing I'll have to get the controller software updated first.

Always the best thing to do.

Upgraded mine tonight. UniFi 5.6.29 is current and the firmware on my UAPs is 3.9.19.8123 now.

Got the controller up to date now. EOL notice for UAP-AC-V2 popped up for both APs, as expected. Upgrade button still absent. Digging further shows there is no firmware update available for this old of a device. That's what I love to see. Time for an upgrade.

Of course it was inevitable, but first time I've seen their stuff go EOL.

I think it is the first of the UAP line. They have plenty of other lines that have stuff go EOL

.NET Core is a competitor to .NET and Mono. All three are implementations of the .NET runtime environment. All three come from Microsoft today.

I've heard people talk about forking a thread when things get off track. How is that done, rather than just starting a new thread?

For normal users like you and me, we click the arrow after reply to reply as topic.
Then you can go up and click quote on the post you want to start from to get that info populated.

      0_1517158062437_369b79ec-76cf-4783-b8f9-0ec18afb54a4-image.png

When you do that, how is the title of the new thread determined?

I entered it. It is simply a new topic.

I hadn't tried the Reply As Topic before as I didn't stop and think about what it really meant. That is very cool and easy to keep things on topic.

Yes, very odd that more communities don't leverage tech like that. It makes for some seriously drifting conversations.

Or extra work by posting a link to a new thread and saying "I started a new thread about this." Just quoting the thread is super easy.

And if it isn't quick and easy, people tend to not do it.

I don't see why that's causing issues. Is this a problem specifically with Cisco stuff... or something extra you need to pay for that everything else "just does"?

It is not restricted to Cisco. It is also not a new thing. It has always been an issue. But in today's world, almost no one hosts public sites on internal networks, so many people have no idea what this is.

Yeah, we used this in the 1990s, I'm pretty sure, but back then so much was hosted in house. Now it's a very rare problem to have.

Yeah that's a decade or more before I really got in to IT... before my time.

It must have always been a default (non-adjustable) feature of home routers when I've done my port forwarding. I never had to worry about that. In enterprise, I was just never in an environment that did it like that.

Turns out I don't even need a VPS. I can periodically run my program with my free CI minutes on GitLab.com. It did come in handy for building and pushing the Docker images though, since my upload speed is 350 Kbps.

@scottalanmiller said in Small clients in data centers:

Something to think about, with most modern services you have no need a VPN. VPNs are LAN extenders. Old style LAN based designs with tools like AD can need a VPN to make AD keep thinking it is on a LAN, and things like SMB shares basically need a LAN to function. But if you switch from AD to Azure AD, JumpCloud, local accounts, or central managed local accounts, for example, the VPN is unneeded. Same for "modern" storage like NextCloud, no LAN or VPN necessary. Same for modern web apps, they don't care if they are on the LAN or not.

Part of what makes us flexible where we are, is that none of our services or applications are LAN-centric. Without that, we are free to deploy anywhere we want - internal, colocation, VPS, cloud computing, doesn't matter.

I've saw some cost benefits of leveraging our own data center to provide these cloud services to clients. But with certain VPS offerings getting far lower in price, it's nearly impossible to be THAT competitive.

Yeah, you need some huge scale to get your own facility to have benefits. Even if you can get the cost down, you can't match the performance, ease of use, scalability, capacity, geographic diversity, and protections of even the lowest cost players like Vultr.

I jumped on mxtoolbox to see what email service a new client was using, and it came back with "Microsoft Office", the host is clearly pointing to Office 365.

But that got me thinking, didn't the verbiage use to say "Office 365" instead of "Microsoft Office", or am I just crazy?

I've never noticed, but why does it matter?

I think part of it was the double take, where I was used to seeing Office 365 and then saw "Microsoft Office" and thought well what the hell is that... O365? Yep the host shows as O365, so must just be a name change.

I've been choosing MSI more and more.

      My MSI
      FM2-A85XA-G43
has lasted for quite some time now, I reckon I got this at 2013-2014, and constant daily use, and it is pretty neat, no sign of issues and even if I sell this PC I still think it will last a few more years without any issues.

The thing with MSI though, is that I wish there audio component in the motherboard were better.

Now I see some clarification after a little testing. If I use the graphical tool Users and Groups, I cannot save the user by only entering the username (blank comment), I have to enter a full name which then creates a comment. But if I use adduser and just hit enter on the full name section, it doesn't create a comment automatically. Command line wins again.

@Mike-Davis and they get to find out that he was walked out and fired for having given notice.

The more they know... Helps them plan better for their own departure.

Yeah, and to be fair to them, you don't want management able to pretend that you walked out without notice or that you were fired for something that they won't tell them about.

      Better yet. . .

"If they can afford 1 SAN, they can certainly afford 2, and make things truly solid". . .

that would be commission + just good IT.

Of course horrible finance control, but whatever.... with just a single SAN its still horrible finance control.

Would it not be a good time to start pitching better setups such as Starwinds Appliances?

Funny... I actually did bring that up, and was told since nobody has heard of them, then they probably weren't very good. I thought they were joking, but they weren't.

      Who told that? Competitor? 🙂

Likely someone who had heard of them quite a lot, lol.

@MattSpeller So I did a little testing with some users. Lol I honestly have never tried to deselect an attribute in bulk before. So the left box checked has to be checked to select the right box.

If you check only the left box, you are removing a checked box on the user's profile (like cannot change password). If you check both boxes you are checking off an attribute (like user must change password at next login).

Just thought I'd pop in and clarify...

Ye the point of the left tick box is just to show you want to edit a property

I agree with the assessments. Basically you rebooted in a long, round-about way. But it was time consuming and ultimately didn't teach you anything. What you learned is that rebooting next time will solve the problem faster and more reliably 🙂 It's not all bad, you have slightly more info than you would have had otherwise, but there are almost certainly more useful places for your time.

@Mike-Davis said in "You don't just restore a server":

I would poke around it long enough to figure out if the server had been logged in to, or if a user's computer encrypted all the files. You don't want it coming right back. Like others said, figure out how it got infected and then restore back before the infection.

If you want to do that, in 95% of cases, take a fresh backup, isolate it and do that offline in a forensics lab after you deal with getting production back. Just leaving it alive could result in more data leaving the environment.

Wasnt there an SBS version where the only way to join a doimain was using IE on a client?

With SBS, you can do things the "normal" way, but if you use their tools like the dashboard, it does some extra stuff in the background. For example, if you run the web based join program, it sets your DNS statically so that the server is the first DNS server. This is useful if your router is doing DHCP and you can't turn it off. It helps someone that is not a full time admin take care of the basics.

The SMB almost never needs multiple SQL Server instances. Saying it is for security means that there are jsut bad software developers in the loop that did not write their applicaiotn to use appropriate permissions.

One thing I've been told is people who don't understand multiple instances, want them. Those who do know about them, don't want the hassle.

Generally true. Sometimes you need different versions, and then it can make sense.

Probably what they did the last 100 times someone pointed out how clueless they are. Only a trend of burying their heads in the sand would allow them to think that they could state something like that out loud and not sound like idiots.
