Workloads are multiple WordPress sites on one Ubuntu server OS (boy, what a lot of fun it is trying to get any documentation that gives a clear step-by-step ... just blew up the server for the umpteenth time now need to figure out what broke it as search sucks at this point for me) as well as Mastodon.
We'll be setting up some SFTP sites for clients once we get the WordPress sites online.

It's not terrible, but yeah, there is a surprising lack of documentation on that. It's like the single most common Linux server task and it seems no one knows how to do it.

I can only imagine that there was a time when everyone knew how to do it and because of that, stopped teaching it, and now no one knows. But you need it constantly.

      Wow, no kidding.

The number of "How to set up WordPress multiple sites on one VPS/Ubuntu Server" articles is crazy and they're all somewhat different. Plus, there's "multisite" which is *.domain.com hosting subdomain sites. We don't want that.

Got a good How-To pointer? Please & Thanks?
      *Sorry for co-opting the thread.

I really need to make one. BUt that's not going to be a "this week" item as I'm in Costa Rica for my anniversary.

My team needs it too. I should be able to hand this stuff off to them easy peasy and I can't.

      Happy anniversary. How many years?

      Understood.

      19 married, 21 together!

Suweet. December is 20 for my wife and I. It's been an amazing ride. :0)

Cool, almost the same. Pre-emptive congrats to you as well.

      Ta.

Looking forward. Have lots of surprises for her.

option but honestly I just haven't explored it yet for a multi-client setup.

I have one Unifi Controller with 70 Customers and they have each their own login and can manage it from their end. This one is not hosted on Vultr but rather in AWS but it is working well.

Moving to Vultr though very soon.

Yeah, I've worked with a single instance managing 200+ customers. Easy, especially when you can adopt a new AP before taking it on site.

I hate this so much... mostly because I have no say in things between the reseller and my boss when it has to do with products or services I'm not much involved in, but still effected by it. By the time my opinion on said product or service is asked for, the decision has pretty much already been made and discussed.

which makes them the head of IT - just remind them of that.

Yup, refer to them as the CIO, or the "IT lead", or whatever descriptive title hits home that they are responsible for the IT decisions and failures.

Figured it out. Some backup software can create sparse files. File Station is reporting the size of data including sparse size, but Storage Manager is reporting only actual data on disk.

On Linux, this is often the difference between the output of df and du.

Are there any printers installed on it?

I had server once that kept randomly crashing and it turns out it was a printer driver of all things.

No printers installed... but I had wondered the same thing as I found that on some forums.

      It drove me nuts.

Kept rebooting the server in the middle of the day, randomly. It was awful.

Are you sure the spooler caused the reboot rather than a faulting driver not being isolated and caused the server to reboot because of a driver issue? I've witnessed print spoolers on servers crash many times and cause the whole list of printers to become unavailable, but that is about the extent of it.

Pretty sure it was the driver.

I think it was an older printer that maybe didn't have an updated driver.

I could definitely see a problematic driver causing a server to crash. If it isn't isolated, it could certainly cause the spooler to crash as well (but without causing the server to crash).

Most "hot new things" apply to existing technology. It's extremely rare that a new industry term arises before (or with) the invention of something. It's normally more a recognition of something that's been created. SaaS for example arose as a term decades after the idea was pioneered and at least five years after it was mainstream. But it doesn't make the things that predate the name not SaaS, it's just a super broad term.

@stacksofplates said in Ubiquiti WiFi vs... everyone:

This isn't wifi related but a big downside for us is the largest 10 gig switches are only 16 port. For a site with 40 Gb core and 10 Gb everywhere it's a big limitation.

I wouldn't buy 10Gbps ports in 2018. 25Gbps or 100Gbps. Cost is the same for 25Gbps with how the ASICs and optics work.

I use the Dell Site and quote it as is since we are a partners and then provide the quote with the spec I want to our VAR (GHA Technologies) and they provide me the quote and anything comparable from HPE or other server vendor.
