@scottalanmiller is right. The bottleneck is always the customer router. And not so much bandwidth as much as packets per second. Your dropbox sync is killing your phone calls 50 to 1 over bandwidth 99% of the time. Your $50 linksys router can't handle a million pps.

Most ISP's are little more than Broadsoft resellers with no interconnects in their local market. Even on the WISP side speeds are so good now that bundling voice isn't relevant.

That one was violated this year.

China is responsible for a huge percentage of debris around our planet. Were they penalized for that?

Huge percentage? Not a chance. The US and Russia have been leaving debris for more than 50 years before China ever got started.

      http://www.space.com/3415-china-anti-satellite-test-worrisome-debris-cloud-circles-earth.html

China tested anti satellite missiles etc, so they caught up pretty fast. Happened to be their own satellites to test, but the debris is still there.

Yes, I am quite aware of that. but that is not nearly half of all space debris.

cross out percentage from my original post and put amount

All satellite collisions spew huge amounts of debris. And do you think there is not some up there from US and russia anti sattelite missile tests?

It's likely, but I haven't read anything on it

That would be because it happened before you were born. The Star Wars program was a scary thing.

I vaguely remember hearing about that. This is one of those things that retracts from my studying, but I'll read up on it anyway lol

what does it do that the ER-L doesn't? I know someone else (the guy at SW who swears more than JB) recommended the Peplink to me years ago... but I think the ER-L can do many of the same things now.

Much like Tivo and generic DVRs, they function the same, but the actual execution is more refined.

Outbound load balance has been a feature for many different devices for a while now. I've got an ER-L right now, yeah it does the load balance between the two circuits. But since they are very different speeds, they don't balance as evenly as Peplink can do it. They also don't offer bonded VPN and their interface is easy as fuck to deal with.

Yeah, I can buy a TWC DVR, but my Tivo does more.

I know a successful wireless ISP and basically in his part of the country it's cost prohibitive to get copper, let alone fiber, to his customers.

I have worked with a successful fixed wireless company in the past as well. it is most certainly a good solution as long as it is done correctly. Not really any different than any other solution. Do it right and it works well.

Exactly. It's almost all about the ISP in question, not the technology itself.

And to clarify for the naysayers. The ISP includes the installation.

Just one of many reasons I'm glad we use Mint/CentOS wherever possible. The security risks aren't any less, but they are different. Different in a way that's easier for me to prevent against bad actors.

At least you understand that running other OSes than Windows is not the panacea that a lot of people think it is.

For sure. Nothing like comparing ls to what is in a repository to find it's been replaced by a rootkit. Yep, I've seen this happen before.

I will say if you put the NEC in place in the last couple of years (which I thought I saw that you did), it may be possible to sell it on eBay or to some kind of firm that buys old PBXs to make up a little bit of money toward new handsets / something else. When we got rid of our Avaya IP Office 406 system in 2013 and moved to Elastix, a company bought all the hardware from us for around $1500 - $2000 if memory serves (including about 70 Avaya 5410 desk phones as well).

Compare the cost of the system to the money saved over a period of 2-3 years switching to a SIP provider and using some type of open source PBX. You may make that money up pretty quickly.

In 2009 they tested this with a 700MB file. It took 70 minutes for the pigeon to do it. The ISP failed completely. A car took twice as long (but could carry a lot of tapes.) The pigeon, basically, has 50% the latency overhead of the car but can't carry a fraction as much information. The ISP is effectively useless.

If in 2009 the pigeon could do 700MB in 70 minutes, today it could do 512GB in the same time! That's like an 800x increase in speed.

Current pigeon speeds would be 7GB per minute or 122MB/s which is 975Mb/s. Pigeons in Australia are basically matching Gigabit Fiber speeds!!

Utica and Rome I know have Verizon DSL and TWC but I don't think they have FiOS. It's a poorer demographic, sadly...

It's sad because other than that one issue, Utica has some amazing downtown office space.
