Eventually I will end up where you are suggesting - though I currently use Dell's Appassure Replay, not Veeam.

I am going to try installing the "server" software on my workstation just to make sure they haven't limited it in any way.

The whole point of my post was simply to ask if XO (or XS) was really something normal IT admins should be using.

Knowing that you are pushing this product (XO) is definitely helpful toward that end.

I got the answer I was looking for, which is - yes it's definitely something IT admins should be using or at least learning.

    Perfect timing...

I never do anything formal. In the setup process a lot of things get stressed anyway. Normally I am using the server quite a bit before turning it over to users so I do not tend to worry about further testing.

Especially if you are dealing with a virtualized platform, it's been doing a lot of things before this point.

There are systems that do this with version control. You could do this with GIT or Mercurial, in theory. But eventually a human always has to sort things out.

Yes it's sorted. Sadly, the 2003 iso I had it didn't help me.

I resorted to a Win7 iso to set the first partition to active so it would boot, problem solved.

@hobbit666 You can install anywhere. On the same server is fine, on a different server is fine. It connects over the XAPI interface, so very flexible.

Just adding this note as it was asked about breakglass passwords... one of the things that we are doing to make breakglass passwords easier to manage is setting them in a system template so that every system created with that template gets the same secret root password and no need for the person creating the new system to know the password!

Anyone else contemplating leaving dell? We've seen their quality drop a lot for desktops and laptops in the past 6-12 months.

Who are you using? Reality is there is only 1 other company for us to really consider and that's HP.

We do Dell servers. Dell laptops are crap indeed. recently. But who does not do crap thee days? ;((

With cloud guys like Amazon offering their own WAN gateways (BTW, MSFT did virtual StorSimple recently) I don't see much of the future in WAN gateways and WAN accelerators. Seems to be built-in functionality of a hypervisor, backup, and could. IMHO.

so, you'll have three partitions? one for Ubuntu, one for Windows, and one for shared data that's encrypted?

I know Ubuntu can read NTFS partitions, so maybe you can get away with two?

I'll only have one system that will have three, and the third will be on a second hard disk that will be used for data storage. He will mostly be operating from Windows so I plan to use NTFS for that disk. Other than that, I should just have two partitions on a single SSD.

    --edit--

Most of what they are doing doesn't require a lot of shared data between the Operating Systems, just different sets of tools. They are interfacing with a lot of prototype hardware using various tools. Most of the stuff is designed in Linux, and frequently runs in Windows. Although, some of the design tools are only natively available in Windows. (Altium as an example)

Also of note, the original command from the first post does still not work.

It's still full VDI. VDI existed long before the modern concept of VDI specific tools. This is all that VDI used to be.

Was it the best option, no of course not, but was it really so horrible either? not really.

What roles does the other server have right now other than file server? Even if it is a DC, that's easily fixed, just DCPROMO it down - problem solved.

Granted, I'm totally for the scrap and start over - the current situation also isn't the end of the world.

Another question - What type of backup solution does this potential client have? how much data is on the server?
What makes anyone think the old server is dieing?
