Since you're making some pretty big changes, now might be a good time to rebuild all of these computers. If you you can move them all to the same OS.
Not sure you're aware, but all of the machines you listed (7/8/8.1/10) qualify to be on Windows 10. Any reason they weren't upgraded during the free upgrade window?

Personally, I'd take an image of each system using Clonezilla, and upgrade them to Windows 10. Assuming the machines are granted a free upgrade to Windows 10, then I would purchase one Windows 10 Open License granting you imaging rights, purchase the needed upgrades for your home licensed computers bringing them legally to Windows 10 Pro, then create and deploy a Windows 10 image.

Yes, we upgraded so many computers to Wins 10. But mostly preferred to upgrade Windows 8/8.1. Not upgraded for all, because it was still 1 year old, cannot say how stable it is and don't want to do at that much quantity (100pcs). And some users are happy with Windows 7, better to not touch them if they are going fine.

That's a very bad was to think about software. Windows 10 is not "one year old", it is the update to Windows 8.1 which is the update to Windows 8 which is the update to Windows 7 which was the update to Windows Vista. Windows 10 is the most mature of that family. Windows 7 is the "one year old" release (but patched since then.) Windows 10 is the one with the most time of people testing the code because it is a decade old. You are actually doing the opposite of what you are thinking... you are staying on young "immature" code and avoiding the most stable, most tested code. And you are not trusting a vendor on whom you have decided to depend. That's a bad combination.

Anyway, still I have chances I think, I seen somewhere to upgrade still to Windows 10 for free and second option is, we need to get Pro versions for some Home Editions, so I will get Windows 10 Pro.

@Tim_G I can't recommend that enough... I'll probably never outgrow it (until software specs require more than it has at least).

@scottalanmiller fwconsole starts asterisk, and it makes sure it's started and running with the correct UID

How is the Asterisk engine not open source? It's released under the GPL meaning you can do whatever you want with the code base. FreePBX remains one of the, if not the, very best implementations of an Asterisk distribution that is also 100% open source. I'm just not sure where you're going with the last few threads about this.

Asterisk and FreePBX are open source, but Schmooze made changes regarding things such as third party module signing and requirements related to commercial modules that soured the mood with some in the FOSS telephony community.

The referenced article is old. As of this year you can sign your own modules without asking for anything from Sangoma. We've even written unit tests around this functionality so it can never break. We do listen to the community and have made changes over the last two years to how GPG functions. One of the biggest things we did was allowing users to sign any module locally without having to sign a CLA or a CSA with Sangoma, putting the power of open source (with GPG benefits) back into the hands of users.

I do realize that it is an old article. But it is a fact that changes were made that upset the FOSS community. Personally, I could care less, I just want a solid working product.

Yeah it is, lol. Glad to see the move in that direction. Not that using PHP was any kind of a big deal to end users, but it's a nice change of pace. I'm hoping for a faster, more responsive interface then as well 😉

I've installed MATE, and am able to connect via that now - but it plays Pithos using the main computers speakers. not what I want... when I have the stereo system on the other side of the room....

There should be options to tunnel the sound through the SSH session.

Set up here is just about 1 vm per service if running Linux. Jira, pydio, openvpn stuff, wordpress nextcloud(testing) XO, Unitrends, other web services those are all separate vms.
On Windows we do 1 as well, or more if it is easy. But I think file and print and wsus on 1 vm might be the only multiple service server we have. CRM, ADFS, Exchange, AD, Sharepoint are single service vms though, for obvious reasons. So by far most vms running 1 service here. Just makes it easier.

My new Mitel system does DHCP with no reservations, and when the phone comes on the first time, you have to log into as the extension so it registers with the Mitel system. I'm guessing form there it's probably MAC based (though that wouldn't work through a router, but who knows).

Why do you want to transfer a call? Are you wanting a full featured softphone to replace a desk phone? Then pay for one. Software development is not cheap you know.

Yes, a full featured deskphone replacement. I would have every intension of paying for one, especially at $5. I was just making a comment that the free version was limited. I typically don't pay for one unless I test it first.

You have a perfectly working phone for free. If you want extra, then it is available.

That said it is $5 for transfer and conferencing on the app.

Yep, agreed. So far, call quality is fine for me. And like I said, I don't really care about price, especially for 5 bucks.

BTW, as an alternative desktop app, I've found that Jitsi has been great as well.

I keep getting stuck on the fact that a single (or RAID 1) drive (winchester) itself is so slow, so easy to saturate its throughput that is almost seems useless today. Of course this could be expanded out to then say, well if RAID 1 is useless, then RAID 5, 6, etc are even more so.
Please don't take that to be me saying RAID 1 is useless, of course it's not. Using RAID 1 for work loads that don't need a ton of storage or throughput, RAID 1 is great.
