uh.. Isn't SAN a different situation altogether?

No. Both are a waste of money with little true value and hyped or marketed heavily as a good thing.

They are actually very positive about the feedback that I've gathered and looking into who is blocked and how they are blocked and how to change that to make more sense. It's a great discussion going on.

Remember when a company goes out of business, yes the business ceases, but the people trying to make money off of it continue to exist. They can start a new company or just get normal jobs or they can retire. They have lots of options. Any business venture has to be more fun or more profitable or somehow more valuable than something else that they would be doing.

If you consider there to be unlimited value in paying ransomware, you would also see unlimited value in buying said business. But that's not how businesses are evaluated.

That's actually a good way to think of it.... if you had to buy the same business fresh, how much would an investor be willing to pay? You would never pay that same amount in ransomware because of the additional risks involved (they might not turn over your data, they might have sold it, you are now a target, etc.)

Because that is basically what is happening with ransomware - you are buying the business again.

That's why comparing 500GB to 500GB for a "Watt per GB" comparison.

I assume we're talking average... Some HDDs are set to time out and switch to low power mode and stuff... and some folks (like me) go in and turn that off). SSDs have the advantages of not having to spin up or down. They simply draw less power.

Spinning down a Winchester drive dramatically increases its chance of death. So would increase costs in other places. Not sure if that would save money over the drives lifespan or not since it easily cuts 75% of the lifespan off.

Something to consider with a VRTX is that that is eight to sixteen Intel Xeon CPUs in a loaded chassis. That is a massive amount of compute power (with very little storage throughput.) So you have the CPU power to handle easily ~400 typical VMs. But the storage capacity and throughput of no more than an R510. Even an R720xd or R730xd has more drive capacity than the VRTX. So the ratio of IOPS and capacity to CPU is wildly different than with normal servers.

Might be a good idea to break out these HD conversations into their own thread.

Go ahead and make a new one. I think most of what is here should stay as it relates to the discussion at hand. But a new one would be good.

Just gut instinct but the whole TC saga has given me bad vibes and I don't trust it 100% like I used to

That is what I am running into Matt.. I like and want to support OpenSource all I can. I need a product I can rely on... but I have reservations...

What is causing the reservations? TC/VC is not the best product ever, that's certain, but what actual concerns are there versus just fear mongering what SW spread a lot of? I'm not vouching for the product, just saying I've seen nothing of concern yet.

To add some on topic input. Last year I ported 50 lines from TDS Telecom ($25k/year for hosted PBX with metered use) and it took almost three months to port all of our numbers. In the end we ended up being unable to port some, namely ones that had been previously ported from Vonage to TDS. Now we run FreePBX in house with all Polycom IP450 (found a lot of them going for $35 each) and spend far less than that.

My point here is, even if you get approval to move forward, and for the political reasons outlined above I wouldn't poke the bear, it will likely be an uphill battle with TDS.

SSDs save a TON on power over Winchester drives. That's for sure.

I agree there. I'd have to look it up but willing to bet taking out the two 15k, adding the ssd will still be a net power savings

Does Let's Encrypt give SAN certs? I was under the impression that it's for single one off type situations where people don't have the cash to purchase their own cert, most likely being used by someone self hosting (or single site/server hosting).

If it is free, there is no reason not to get 4 or 5 certs instead of a SAN for most things.

Stupid question time (cause I don't know) can you install multiple certs on the same server?

I don't know about apache, but with NGINX each virtual host can have it's own.

It seems as though you can install another DC, then replicate, then demote the EVAL one.

But I think I'll just go with not doing that. 🙂

Yes, it wouldn't be a functional AD if you could not do that. You risk schema issues, though.

@Jason They can't connect to the domain network, they're force onto the guest network. As we required any devices that want to join the domain network, they must already be in the domain.

Additionally, they need to authenticate via RADIUS.

The guest network is vlan'd off.
