If an encrypted laptop was stolen loaded with patient data, you could still be in the same HIPAA predicament depending on the judge and expert witness.

I am under the impression that OCR considers FDE as a non offense.

I mean, the breach happened, but there would be no penalty as the data is potentially inaccessible.

@scottalanmiller said in old MSP wants to know what they did wrong:

So what ever came of this MSP conversation?

I never had to talk to him. Emails relayed through the business owner went back and fourth about getting the domain name transferred and that was it.

I did end up keeping a list of everything I found that was wrong because that was the worst environment I have ever seen - maintained by a "professional" or not.

Not sure, and I'm not going to power up the old system to find out. New one is running fine. If I ever run in to a situation like that again, there are a lot more checks I would do.

It looks like someone will be sitting through a Meraki demo to see if it's free for the first 100. That client only has 20 company owned mobile devices, so that would work.

That's only for the free AP

Yup, which you don't want / need the AP. You just need the MDM, not the hardware.

Fair point. Fair point indeed. lol. I will admit, I have a rule of thumb with inconsistent problems. If it's on a computer, first assumption is hardware.
For something like this, first assumption is Firewall, and more specifically NAT.

Could probably build another linux box as a relay, but it would probably make more sense to build a new linux box with SASL installed and then install HylaFax on that so we only have one box to support. I've never set up HylaFax and I'm assuming it would have to be physical because of the modem, but I could be wrong about that.

Which is what we did last week 😉 It's all set up and ready to go through GMail. Test messages and everything.

Instead of testing emails with a fax, get the email working itself first. Work on sending emails directly, once that is working, add in the fax piece. That will make this a ton easier to test.

Actually I've seen UEFI Windows 7 Keys. It was only in the last year or so before Windows 8 came out. It was well after SP1 for Windows 7 was released.

I guess that's fair. I've seen ones that you can flash the BIOS to upgrade it to UEFI but I never saw a Windows 7 computer come with 7 and a UEFI BIOS.

Plenty of machines shipped with BIOS keys and windows 7, because they were windows 8 keys baked in, that the vendors shipped to you with Windows 7.

Yeah, I've seen that too. Especially around the time when 8 was first released, yes, I saw this a lot. So that's fair.

@black3dynamite said in Splitting Array for Hypervisor on Hyper-V:

      @JaredBusch
Configuring one big array and creating a partition for Hyper-V and another for the VMs is not common? Or keep the hypervisor and the VMs on one partition?

It is not common, because the most common RAID adapters out there do not have the functionality to create partitions on the RAID array. We had a thread on this subject not too long ago in fact. If someone could find it and link it that would be great.

It is definitely a nice way to handle it if you can have the array split logically prior to installing the hypervisor.

You can still split the array up at the hypervisor install level.

Would there be any benefit to a split at the adapter level versus inside the array as partitions?

      6/halfdozen.

At the controller level, the readability of the data side is not dependant on the hypervisor side being bootable. You simply boot to a USB media or something and read you data. t is a failure mitigation concept to me.

Not something that is going to make day to day any different

      Time out - what?

If I create a single array as most RAID controllers only allow - and present that to my installation of Hyper-V, Hyper-V (assuming it works like install Windows Server - and I have to assume this because I've only ever installed Hyper-V twice, and most recently 2 years ago) then Hyper-V will allow you to create two partitions before installation begins. Assuming you install Hyper-V install one of them and your VMs into the other - what prevents you from booting to your aforementioned bootable media and gaining access to the VMs?

Heck, even if you just left it as a single large partition, why wouldn't booting to your bootable media still grant you access to the data?

As i said, 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other... Most of the time what you said is true. but losing the system that created the logical partitioning can always have a chance to lose everything.

That is still true for doing it at the RAID controller. just the point is moved.

Again - WHAT!?!?! I don't think I've ever seen an OS issue cause a partition failure before.

This used to be a big issue in my family too. No idea why it happened, but it did, all the way up until the XP days... then it tapered off.

MS started working on storage stability a bit. It was pretty horrific for a long time.

Offline @dafyre mentioned it was in the DOS days, pre WIn9X mainly - but almost completely gone with XP.

that's probably why I didn't see it happen. I did start at a place with lots of Win3.11, but I guess we were lucky this just didn't happen to us.

And outside of my family, that never seemed to be a common occurrence with most other folks either.

Is Free-NAS ever a good idea? I've only ever heard nasty things said about it.

Only if you know nothing about building and managing storage is it going to serve a purpose. BSD or Solaris without the added bits would be the preferred route to use ZFS.

And if you don't know those bits, you should not be running a SAN.

So I talked to someone who does this. The training for one of these printers in usually around 10-15 hours to learn to use them depending on their proprietary software. So knowing Vector Graphics is a very tiny piece to it. That being said the printer companies do usually provide this training when you purchase the printer so might be worth it to them.

The printers are quite a bit of money in initial purchase and maintenance. Although $15,000 may be about right for an entry level one.

Sounds about right for what I have seen. That will be very entry level, but viable.
