You can try disabling WSD on the printer itself, if it isn't a service for Windows to see perhaps it wont try to use it.

This is the same thing we do to avoid this nasty printer plague 😄

Well, you could do that with nearly every piece of hardware (*). But Raspberry does one great thing: People get creative.

(*) just as an example, you could write a I2C driver for some external IC using your PC's serial / parallel port. Ok, nowadays one would need a USB-2-RS232 / USB-2-LPT, but you'll get the idea 😉

Slightly off topic, do you have issues with them keeping correct date/time?

Yes, we do. Have you seen the same thing?

      Yes 😠
Caused mayhem when groups of them would meet and no one could get on to the WiFi network.

When we figured out what the issue was, we implemented a time sync GPO for them.

A time sync GPO, aren't they already doing that with the PDCs emulator?

      Should be by default.

Is it worth $100 (plus S&H) to replace?

      DL385 G5

Dual PSU Dual CPU Two 73GB 15.1k drives Two 146GB 10k drives

      I got a DL380 G6 with 24 GB RAM for $200 off of Amazon. I'd say no.

That's why we didn't get it fixed.

I have been patching Windows 7 machines that haven't been turned on for a few months and have found that the update process takes an age of man to complete without manual intervention. (local WSUS)

Fortunately, I have found a process that's worked to speed up the update process.

Download and Install the latest Windows Update Agent
-- here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/949104 Run MS Windows Update Diagnoistic tool
-- here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2714434 Install Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64 (post install reboot required)
      -- here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332 run wuauclt /r /a

That is way too intense on IT staff time.

Click check for updates. Close window and tell user to work like normal. Next morning, click install. Close window and tell user to work like normal and when it pops up to reboot, do so.

      Way less IT time involved.

Yes, this is true but it can be done while doing other things on the PC. You know, multitasking 😉

how many computers have the card readers? Instead of messing with the rest of the company's drive letters you could script something like:

      diskpart
      select vol g
      assign letter=b

You have to put the diskpart commands in .txt file and then specify that as the script for diskpart to use, but you get the idea. Just move the local media card reader to a letter that's not used by the company and be done with it.

I have some groupings that I want to 'filter' by, but to do so, I would need to rename the Security Group Names

      I have

Accounting Printer Deployment Engineering Printer Deployment Sales Printer Deployment Shop Printer Deployment

      and I would rather have:

Printer Deployment Accounting Printer Deployment Engineering etc

Should be able to. Group names are just identifiers there is really a UID that each group has that is actually linked to the GPOs.

Updated, guess we'll just wait to see if it broke anything. It's just printers so nothing critical.

Recent updates to the iOS system have made a number of changes. One of which is you don't swipe down to turn off Suggested words when using the keyboard.

How to turn off the QuickType keyboard on your iPhone or iPad

Launch any app and pull up the keyboard. Tap and hold on the emoji icon in the bottom left of the keyboard. ... Swipe upwards and hover your finger over the Predictive toggle and release your finger. To enable QuickType again, just follow the same three steps.os

I was not under the impression the swiping down on the handle was disabling it. Only hiding it.

Again, getting less than 20 people quickly to make a vote is one thing, getting 1000's is another. Perhaps the number of companies that have 1000's that matter (i.e. it takes thousands of shareholders to make up a majority, it can't be done with less) is so small that it's not relevant to the conversation?

That's likely only a handful of companies. If any, it's only a theory that any like that exist. Normally there are either super large individual investors or funds that hold the majority of shares in just four or five representatives. They normally talk directly.

But if there was even need for an exception to this, investors can do whatever they want. They can have email voting and require responses in five minutes if they want.

@scottalanmiller said in Files in a LANLESS system:

@Dashrender said in Files in a LANLESS system:

@scottalanmiller let's assume that we get direct application access from Word/Writer into SP or NC, how do you send a link to someone else so they know they have access? How do you register that 'link' in some way so that the correct application launches when trying to open the link?

How do you do it today? Why would it need to change at all?

Paying particular attention to Gene's wording, there would be no more files, only data in a DB. In that case, to send the information via email would mean extracting that data into some kind of usable format then emailing it.

So the contents of the file are simply sent as a file.... that's all a file normally is, a database holding text directly on it with a label on it with the filename. So.... literally nothing changes here under the hood. There is no more or less extraction than before.

You were weren't talking about getting rid of docx files and xlsx files, etc?

Yup, and still am. No files, but that doesn't mean that you can't have a file "view".

But OneDrive, etc still store those things as objects, I don't think you can edit the 'Word.doc' file directly inside the DB, you need to send that object of data to Word to edit it.

As objects, not as files. I don't need to pull the files from OneDrive to edit them. I can talk to the database directly with MS Office 2013 or later, even the online version.

Yeah Office is a bad example because of the massive integration.

Or a good example because it shows how easily it can be done and how well people can't even tell.

LOL - yeah, but you are limited to only MS based files, All other files are just stored as objects in the DB.

Are they? I'm not sure of that. But that's always going to be the case. File systems are for ad hoc, unplanned files. The real question should be... why do such files exist in your environment? When do you actually want ad hoc file types that you didn't expect?

Actually Sharepoint does not natively interface .doc files either. It only uses the new format .docx files in the manner you are saying.

Don't I know it.. I was playing with SharePoint and damn if I didn't have all kinds of problems with DOC files.

@scottalanmiller said in Disaster Recovery in a lanless network:

There really isn't anything too special as normal backups tend to be LANless already. Not always, but generally. Some backup tools rely on SMB/NFS which is not very LANless, but lots don't.

You consider backups that are stored separately from other files generally safer, right?

What about a backup system that mounts the CIFS / NFS path when the backups start, and then unmounts them when it has completed?

You still have an issue where Crypto-whatever 's are scanning the networks for CIFS/NFS shares.

True, but generally such shares are only writable to a particular user / server.

Then why bother unmounting them? You gain nothing by unmounting them.

In the event that the backup server does get hit with a crypto... If the backup drives aren't mounted, then at least your data is safe until backups start.

I think I see where you're going with this. The backup software runs as a user that is only used for that software. If that's the case, then there are still two things to consider.

you don't actually need to mount it because the backup software will right directly to the UNC path, for which only that user is allowed right access. while mounted as another user, only the backup user account itself can actually write to the mount, so you should be able to leave it mounted all the time.

True. I'm thinking along the lines of the way Veeam for Linux works (I'm on the beta).... It mounts, backs up, then unmounts.

That explains it.. I don't think Windows works that way, and if it does, it's completely under the hood. I suppose you could see some sort of mount if you dig around, but I doubt it would be enumerated as a drive letter, if you were using a UNC instead of a pre mounted mapped drive.

Don't know about the Windows version... I back up to an always connected USB drive with Veeam hangs head in shame lol.

Don't feel bad. My onsite backup for our x-rays are on a USB attached drive. The Offsites are a bit better off though 😉

USB drive sitting on a shelf? Or actually attached to the server? USB as a mechanism is just fine.

      Sitting on a shelf?

Actually it's both, the drive is sitting on a shelf AND it's connected to the server.

I don't like it because it's a single drive, no reliability in the data - HUGE hassle to recreate if there's a failure. Originally put in place as a band-aid, but we all know how those end up. The cost of rebuilding it is about 4 times the cost of a Buffalo 2 drive NAS.
