              Well, you could do that with nearly every piece of hardware (*). But Raspberry does one great thing: People get creative.

              (*) just as an example, you could write a I2C driver for some external IC using your PC's serial / parallel port. Ok, nowadays one would need a USB-2-RS232 / USB-2-LPT, but you'll get the idea ;)
