@Emad-R It's all great having numbers and visual aid to show results but will you really notice the difference when using Ubuntu compare Debian, assuming you are using the same desktop environment?

That's the tough comparison. Ubuntu has more features and a different desktop. I specifically like Ubuntu's desktop. So going to Debian I'd likely modify it to the point of being Ubuntu, lol.

It looks like the whole issue was due to their use of some weird distro years ago.

That article technically doesn't say why they need Windows now, so for all I know they have some new weird requirements I don't know about, but assuming they don't, I think the decision to go to Windows is a horrible idea. They'd be much better off going to Ubuntu instead.

Yes I upvoted a post about how Ubuntu would be better than an alternative. Please no heart attacks people.

Step one is to remove the drives and clone them with dd or recovery tool to a new drive.
You could probably recover 99.9% of the data - if you want.

As you can guess from all of their previous issues, they don't want to pay for any recovery, they just want it magically fixed for free. They don't own any storage onto which to clone it, either.

Then what is the point of any of it? It appears to have zero value to the business.

      I said that to them.

@Pete-S Ok, I went ahead and let the installer partition it using the defaults for LVM. Everything is working!

The installer creates a small primary partition and installs /boot to it. It then creates an extended partition with the remainder of the drive and slices up logicals out of that for the LVM. It puts “/“ in vg1 as “lv root” and puts /swap in vg1 as well as lv swap”.

I was not creating a /boot. Never have. I was just creating a primary for the “/“ and then saving some of it for an extended /swap. I’ve done this forever. It even works in a VM. I have no idea why I couldn’t get it to work on the physical machine.

So how we did it the last place I worked. We used a mix of X2Go, X-11 forwarding/MobaXTerm, and RDP. It depended on the user as to how they wanted to do it.

RDP gave them a full desktop since X2Go couldn't any longer on GNOME 3. X2Go gave them just applications from a menu to pick. People who were used to the cli used X-11 forwarding because it's what they were used to.

If I use zsh, I'm good. If I enter BASH from zsh, I get kicked out after several seconds. Definitely is something to do with BASH.

Stupid tryout: use bash and then enter zsh before being kicked out. Still out?
To understand if it is the firing of bash itself or the stay in bash...

No, the underlying bash remains until the ZSH closes. Same as if you were running top from it, for example.

So basically bash is able to run long running jobs with your user...
It's the interactivity with the shell to be broken... Meh.

Sorry the thread is long, did you mention any test from zsh with:

Bash <-- ok this kills the session
      Bash -i any difference???
      Bash -l ???
      bash --norc
      bash --noprofile

      From bashman page

Less to that than I thought there would be.

It's surprisingly simple and basic. It's really just passing one port to another, and using SSL. About the most basic setup you can have.
