I've been using OnlyOffice personally for a couple of years now. It was just better at getting the MS Office formatting correct when I made the switch. Which was a major factor for me while looking for a job.

/tangent Recruiters, do yourselves a favor and stop asking for resumes/CVs in Word format! /tangent

I've used LibreOffice since it was only OpenOffice. Remember when it started as StarOffice, the Sun aquesition, the split to LibreOffice, and now the Apache OpenOffice. More history lesson here. Sun purchased the company, Star Division, in 1999 because buying said company for 59.5 million was cheaper than licensing Microsoft Office for 42,000 employees.

Even when asked, I’ll still only provide a PDF version of my resume.

LOL, yup. I give a pass to the sales applications. But tech applications in anything but PDF get the stink eye from me.

Oh-kay . Yes - you are right... and yet you are (slightly) wrong.

In this case, while Libre Office is ''content flow'' as opposed to ''page based'' The project is page based - something I was doing, but didn't know exactly how to explain.

      thusly;
      https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/91386/can-i-change-the-page-order-in-writer/

From your question, your document is "page-based". Go to the logical consequence of your choice and store your "pages" as independent documents. To guarantee a common look-and-feel, I'd recommend to design them from a common template.

Then, you create your "synthesis" document (the one meant for printing) as a master document which references all your "page" documents. Read the LO User's guide if you aren't familiar with the concept.

In the master document, the included "pages" can be reordered from the Navigator panel (F5) with "up" and "down" buttons after selecting the "page" you want to move. In essence, it is equivalent to @RGB-es copy-and-paste solution without the risk of incorrectly selecting page content or overwriting other text.

This is basically what I had done in Word...

Just had a very large client reach out and ask for LibreOffice again after moving to MS Office because they found Excel too difficult to get data in correctly. So they are going to LibreOffice for exactly the reason that everyone claims that "everyone" chooses MS Office... LO is easier to use and has better compatibility 🙂

They own licenses for both, so purchase cost is not a factor. They've used MS Office more time in the last three years. Given less time with LibreOffice and zero "price" incentive, they've chosen it as the superior product for them - with zero prompting from IT. Out of the blue the managers chose it as the better product.

@scottalanmiller said in LibreOffice - Runs so slowly:

In giant shops (thousands of users and up), the problem with MS Office is that you don't pay for it just for the users who would benefit from it, but you pay for it for everyone.

That is so totally false. I have not seen that anywhere, including where I currently work which is many thousands users.

So your claim is what... that they 1) don't actually pay for the software or 2) they use it only for a few people who would actually benefit from it or 3) the kind of work that they do is both appropriate to an office suite and so insanely heavy that they actually get to the point where MS Office is noticeably more efficient, yet still an appropriate tool to use?

If any of those, how does that work?

      If 1... okay piracy.
If 2... how do they interoperate with others, or is it all office suites for only individual use?
If 3.... what the heck kinds of tasks are they doing that are so different than any other company?

It looks like the whole issue was due to their use of some weird distro years ago.

That article technically doesn't say why they need Windows now, so for all I know they have some new weird requirements I don't know about, but assuming they don't, I think the decision to go to Windows is a horrible idea. They'd be much better off going to Ubuntu instead.

Yes I upvoted a post about how Ubuntu would be better than an alternative. Please no heart attacks people.

Do you have Column A locked so when you scroll everything else moves and A is hidden? Or is that filter on A only to find numbers etc?

It's just the behavior of a normal workbook. Nothing hidden or locked (from my experience anyway). If the column you want to edit extends off the right edge of the screen it moves the window to try to make the whole column visible.

Not that it's relevant really, but I don't see a way to turn it off in Excel either.

Yeah, I've seen this behavior in Excel before - definitely annoying... I get what they are doing - showing all the data for that column... but still.

I understand it, too. It would be nice if it was something you could toggle though

Not sure how I should have things configured. I believe that I followed all of the instructions properly, but it is not working and there are no really clear instructions for a dual server scenario. All of the official stuff lists single server and Apache.

The one thing I remember having issues with was that it wants to communicate over the same "channel" in between the Collabora and NextCloud servers, so if the external browser connection is https, then it's not happy and throws errors if the back end isn't communicating over https as well. Getting that https channel setup with the recommended Drupal container and instructions for that didn't seem to work, and was such a pain I gave up trying to get it fixed at the time.

This Notebook bar doesn't seem like anything particular different or special in anyways.

I've been using LibreOffice Draw (supposedly doesn't have the functionality) and I checked Calc to confirm. I don't see anything mind blowing. .

I'm more interested when will they release the VM/container that will allow users to collaborate and edit files like office 365 on the web.

I played with the WebDav file sharing element inside the desktop software and it was meh.

That's been out for a while. Three months at least.

It was a German closed source company back in the mid-1980s. It's a very, very old product. Sun open sourced it when they purchased it and renamed it to OpenOffice after the switch in code licensing. I suspect that it has been primarily LibreOffice longer now than it was OpenOffice!

Docker just does not work on CentOS, as I found out the hard way.
So I guess it's up to a sysadmin to get Collabora setup for themselves. uck.

That is screwed up. Something I hope docker and CentOS can address...

I think that the fix is ... Fedora.

For vector design, I use Inkscape. I've designed some logos for people with it and it works really well. I've only used Scribus a couple of times but it seemed fine when I used it.
