I just tried out the Android app. It's not terrible on my Galaxy Note 9. There is a significant delay when writing on the screen using either finger or pen. I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on this one.

@Pete-S said in eVetPractice Printing - How it Works and Why Windows & Mac Are Required:

Please share what html function/javascript function/tech/whatever you use to make this happen.

I think we are at cross purposes. I'm not saying that the app can print from INSIDE the browser. I'm saying that the app can present the HTML TO the browser and the browser's print function can print directly without needing a third party application. Straight from browser to printer.

      However, JavaScript can do this because the HTML5 DOM allows for it, as well. So no need to HAVE to use the browser's print button. If you want the page itself to do it, this is the DOM call... window.print();

Thanks Scott. We are at cross purposes because I was being very specific when I mentioned where the print is rendered. In a lot of label applications you can't have it rendered in the web browser from html because you need to send special commands to the label printer inside the label. More advanced label printer have lots of special commands, for instance to generate bar codes on the fly (not from graphics) or time of day or a serial number for each label printed.

Dymo doesn't have that. You can print these exact labels directly, nothing special needed. And this software doesn't need that, they have three products that print identically from the same vendor, they all print the same codes and only this one do they not provide a direct print option. But even in the cases that you are giving, that's not printing exactly, it's using a third party application to do some of your work for you. Again, totally nothing wrong with that, but it's a hokie setup and a really bad design to keep basic printing out of your platform agnostic app and require a potentially buggy or discontinued third party and very limited application to do that simple task for you.

Same vendor, but different product, uses MS Word in the same way. Can't be bothered to do basic tasks in their software and actually put in more effort, rather than less, to make Word do it for them.

How can the browser know what the DNs mechanism is? DO you mean the browser will try a local DNS over HTTPS first? That I can see.

      @scottalanmiller who still uses screensavers. . . . . .

Versus just a blank screen? Isn't the effect the same - a locked system?

No, a screensaver actively uses resources to operate. A blank screen is off.

Plus Cmmd+L locks the screen, no need for a screensaver to do that for you.

the screensaver also has a 'blank' mode which has an associated timer...

If the user set it at 1 min, I'm sure it's about security with them, not some stupid pipe drawing program.... so I'm back to my original comment.

blank screen/screen saver - who cares - end result is the same, a locked system.

Yeah, that was going on too!

      too?

@Carnival-Boy said in Defining the Hobby Business vs a True Business:

My uncle ran a successful hardware distribution business employing dozens of people for over 30 years. His motivation was to generate work, security, and happiness, for owner and employees. He could have been more profitable, but chose not to.

I'll have to tell him he spent his life devoted to a hobby πŸ™‚

But then he was a socialist. Maybe we just think about business differently in Europe? Scott likes to label things, but I'm not sure it makes any difference.

It does, to the point Scott as trying to make, though the posts were long so perhaps you missed it. IT is a Business Tool, as such when in a "business" as Scott would call it - it's pretty easy to know what to do - IT does what it takes to make the business the money money. When you're running a "something else business" (really hate the hobby term, it's pretty demeaning), IT doesn't actually have a cut a dry clear goal... now it has to fall to the whim of those in charge.

So the real question becomes.... why would anyone find the term "hobby" demeaning? Hobbies are what we love to do. Hobbies are the important things in our lives. Hobby is not demeaning or negative. It's just honest. It's only demeaning if the hobby itself is embarrassing.

@scottalanmiller said in Changing Installation Location for MicroSIP Installed via Chocolatey:

By default, installing MicroSIP using Chocolatey causes the install to go to an inappropriate data folder location and is only available for the admin installing user, rather than for the end users of the Windows system. Does anyone have any experience or ideas in changing the installation location so that system users can actually use MicroSIP when installed and maintained using choco?

Asking for @Dashrender and @romo as well.

      I think this might work:
      choco install microsip -ia "'/D=C:\SomeDirectory'"

      choco install microsip -ia "'/D=C:\temp'"

Did install it to C:\temp for me

Is it working for non-admin users?

Yep, I can run the .exe from my C:\temp. You'll probably have to create a shortcut for a user tho.

      yep, I just tried it - I pushed to c:\program files\microsip

and non admins can run it.

and you're right, the shortcut is put on the installing admin's desktop, and nothing in the start menu.

MicroSIP - open source portable SIP softphone based on PJSIP stack for Windows OS.

      https://www.microsip.org/

It says right on the website it’s a portable app, why would you expect a desktop icon or anything on the start menu?

There is a portable version, sure. But there is also a non-portable version.

Your choice of camera can also affects performance a lot due to format. Some formats are very slow to edit and requires ingestion and re-encoding for decent editing performance.

I do everything in a mix of h.264 and h.265

Why would you export anything in h.264 today? Or do you mean your device actually natively records to h.265?

The devices. I try to use h.265 whenever I get the choice.

This is not a good choice. You want to edit in a format that is easy to decode and H.265 is not. So to be able to edit you either have to re-encode your H.265 video clips into another format (aka transcoding) suitable for your editor or suffer much slower editing performance.

If you shoot in H264 you can probably edit it directly without much impact. The editing software will re-encode it on the fly.

      H.265 is a delivery format.

GoPro says h264 only for legacy older devices. H265 is their editing format.

H265 works fine on newer hardware.

But that means that you can run the lighter 32bit OS version that is faster AND it is already overclocked and includes a massive passive heatsink.

But the web browser plus whatever else is running in addition to the OS will still eat up what's left of the RAM pretty easily I would think. My phone uses more than 4g of ram easily.

Not really. It's actually hard to use up the 4GB RAM on the RPI4 as a normal user. Remember that everything running on it is lean, like LXDE for example.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/raspberry-pi-4-8gb-tested

I'd say that if you're happy with the RPI4 performance as a desktop then there's a 95% chance that 4GB RAM will be enough.

If you're a power user then RPI4 is too slow and you'll probably looking at something with at least 16GB RAM anyway.

This is why I like the RP400. It's the CPU, more than the RAM, that is the bottleneck for use and the RP400 is like 15% faster.
