      d pretty quickly you've got a sub-$10K server being hosted at $100/mo. That's a $500/mo skew.

The time value of money and your time managing the device are the next things to consider in this cost equation.

If you check the math, I included some in there already. Maybe too much, maybe not enough, but some is there.

Missed your new post before making mine.

Yeah the firewall was the issue the entire time, for some reason I don't recall that being an issue last time I set this up. ..

Whatever, thank you all for proving it was human error.

There's an entire Ready Node selector here on VMware' site - http://vsanreadynode.vmware.com/RN/RN. One thing we learned is that you can go single-socket with the hosts to save on vSphere and vSAN licenses. Just beef up memory because there will be some overhead for vSAN traffic that folks seem to overlook. I know we did.

Most vendors are pushing single socket these days, except for MS. That's why Scale starts on single socket, for example.

That actually makes sense. With got 22core/44thread processors available, the need for more than a single processor is far less than it used to be.

Yes, it's a very common SMB mistake to buy two procs when almost never is that warranted in the SMB market. Single proc of the same core count and speed is faster than two procs and cheaper.

Well, I'm glad that's been cleared up. You can probably delete the thread now 🙂

I don't even know what the original thread was!

And that is why you have no concept of what you posted being completely wrong for the context of the thread.

Honestly, it is pretty straight forward if you read the first post.

The first post also contains links back to the thread that @DustinB3403 pulled this from.

I was responding the post quoted, though.

Which was in the context of the entire thread. If you want to cherry pick something, then clearly, state as much. You did not.

What kind of phone system do you have? Why not use something like FOP2? That way the phone list is always up to date. If you're using FreePBX you can write a script to output a phone list nightly.

FOP2 is a great choice for a viewable panel. but it is not a list for quick reference.

I keep 3 tabs open with FOP2 most of the day. 2 clients and our phone system.

For only basic email traffic needs like scan to email, just setup a connector in Office 365.

Exchange Online has various rate limits though. So if you think you will be even close to them, use postfix locally to send out and just add your local WAN IP to your SPF record.

Why wouldn't your local relay still relay everything through Hosted Exchange in O365? or would that be rate limited as well?

Exchange Online has limits. it does not matter from where the email originate. The software was actually setup to authenticate and send email directly with and Exchange Online account during testing.

This quickly hit the rate limits as the client was sending out large amounts of price notifications to users that has signed up for such.

So this site had a local CentOS 7 box setup and Postfix was configured to send mail out. The SPF record was updated and then a connector was also setup to make sure nothing was blocked for no reason.

@scottalanmiller cool, so if I am already collecting the rest of the database (see previous topic from today using rsync) then backing up the mariadb should grab what is left.

Then all that would be left is to push the backup to an secondary system and test that all works.

In theory. I've had unreliable recoveries from that. I don't know any method to get 100% backup if that code is stored in the database.

Nevermind, seems to work when I don't bother telling the system to use the authorized key.

That IS kinda the idea. ssh just handles that for you, even when called from another program like rsync.

I used them years ago on color printers where ripping a job could take a long time on the weak built in print controller. It's probably been 10 years since I have touched one. Even then, I didn't use it for the scan stuff. The extra processing power was just need to rip print jobs, not for scanning.

@Kimberley-Paessler said in How do you test your website:

@DustinB3403 If you (or your customer) are using PRTG, you could use the "cloud ping" and "cloud http" sensors to monitor reachability from around the world. Those sensors will try to reach your website from 5 different AWS data centers, and will report on reachability and response time from each of those data centers. If something goes wrong, you can get an alert, so you know you need to react. The free version of PRTG will let you run 5 cloud http and 5 cloud ping sensors.

If that's not enough, check out services such as https://www.site24x7.com/, which provide similar ongoing monitoring on a larger scale.

If a one-time or manual test is enough, check out services like https://tools.pingdom.com/ or https://www.webpagetest.org/, which are free and don't require any setup on your side, but only provide a snapshot of up/down at the time you try them.

Along with pingdom, we usually use https://geopeeker.com which also gives a snapshot from multiple locations
