    • RE: Managing Type 1 Hyper Visors

@JasGot In my company, we use XCP-ng on 4 small hosts with maybe 10 VMs on them (2 Win RDP servers, few Linux fileservers...). We manage them with XCP-ng center (Windows app) in LAN and with Xen Orchestra remotely. We are very satisfied with XCP and management is pretty simple. We are no experts but beginners.
We cloned some VMs, copied them from host to host, added additoinal storage after installation...

I tried to install KVM few times and I find it confusing to setup and manage.

      @CCWTech said in Resume work:

I know that there are a lot of 'fake' jobs out there, but I am not getting any hits despite my eperience and wonder if it's my resume. Can anyone suggest a resume writing company that won't break the bank?

      1. I do not think that you resume is the main reason that you are not "getting any hits" (although you can and should improve it). I have done hundreds of interviews (as employer) and I would call you if I offer the job that you want (sysadmin, helpdesk manager...)
      2. You should describe your experience in CCWtech in more detail where it is in your favor. For example, you can name more tools that you are expereinced with (Powershell, KVM, VMWare, HyperV, XCP-NG, Ansible, Chef, Puppet.....)
It would be great if you can list projects or achievements that you have done.
      3. Have you managed other people? If you have, it should be clearly stated in resume. I do not see it in your resume, and it is important experience for any managing position (like Helpdesk Manager)
      4. Email address in your resume should be personal, not business (unless you are owner os CCWtech)

Note: Are your jobs at Police and CCW really overlap from 2008-2014 as it states in you resume?

    • RE: Ticket versus Projects

One wide definition of project that I learned was that project is any situation where you need to complete more then one task to achieve a goal.

We tried Asana and Freedcamp and I think they are both good for tracking tasks/projects within team.
However, I have not yet found app that can fullfill all our wishes for tracking tasks within teams.

how do we reset it to allow for updated devices?

Open "RD Licensing manager", browse for device who's license you want to "revoke", leftclick on it and choose "Revoke license"
As said, up to 20% of total licenses can be revoked before expiry.

Discover all the nuances of Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V VM licensing in the article by Dmitriy Dolgiy, a freelance storage consultant.

Very poorly written article about an old topic.
And the licensing it describes has nothing to do with Hyper-V.

    • RE: Project tracking

@JasGot For my personal task list, todoist.com is the best for me. But for tracking projects that involves more than one person, I do not find it good.
Asana, Freedcamp and monday.com were good from my experience.
Monday.com is somewhat unusual, but more flexible for different stuff. Asana and Freedcamp are "classic" project tracking apps and I find them good.

But I never managed to find "ideal" or "best" app for project tracking

    • Recommendation for home WiFi router

      Hello everybody!
(I'm sad to see Mangolassi dead, but here is a topic from me)

      1. Can you give me some recommendation for new home Wifi router?
Here is description of my "system":

      • internet link is 300/30 Mbps
      • 15 devices should be connected to it (6 phones, 4 laptops, 3 TVs, one WiFi access point + occasionally ,some guest or our HTPC
      • of these 15 devices, 3 should be connected via LAN (2 TVs, one HTPC), others via WiFi

Reason for buying is that my internet provider changed the router type (after upgrade of speed from 200/20 to 300/30, but this new device seems to struggle with the load).

      2. Is there some Mikrotik device that you would recommend for this? (we have good local Mikrotik dealer here)

      3. If I put telecom's router in "bridge mode" and put better router behind it, is it reasonable to expect that the telecom's router's should not be a noticeable bottleneck (or not as much)?

      Thank you

    • RE: Mariadb command questions

@WLS-ITGuy If you wanted to say that old domain is part of usernames, and you want to change only that part of the usernames, there is no single SQL statement, but I see 2 solutions:

      1. Write SQL script that will use LOOP to iterate through all records in table users and then replace username with new username....

      2. Use spreadsheet calculator (Excel or similar) to prepare multiple simple SQL UPDATE statements:

      • Export table "users" (just necessary columns) and import it to Excel or similar _ - prepare new usernames in new column (use SUBSTITUTE() function in Excel)
      • prepare simple UPDATE command for each username (in new column in Excel) - you can use functions like SUBSTITUTE or CONCATENTE to prepare you UPDATE statements with your usernames from previous column, i.e. =CONCATENATE("UPDATE users SET username = '", ....
      • copy UPDATE statements from Excel and execute them

I think secong approach (Excel) is much safer because you see results in spreadsheet before you execute UPDATEs.
Always use WHERE clause when you use UPDATE

If you want more exact statements/formulas, give more detailed structure of your table and usernames

@Woti said in Fedora 39 Server as host with HAproxy and Qemu/KVM virtual machines. Trouble with communication.:

Yes, I tried bridge mode. That hadn't worked. But I found the error at least and the bridge between the host and the VMs works now. I can ping the VMs from the host and vice versa, with IP address and domain name.

However, I can only reach the VMs via their local IP address, not via the domains when using a browser.

I think you should first solve the issue why you can't reach your VMs from outside your LAN (I mean before you setup HAproxy).
I would first test, can I reach them via external IP address. (have you tried this?)
If that is OK, then test access via DynDNS domain.

@Woti How many LAN cards/ports do you have on your physical host?

If you want to share the same physical LAN for multiple VMs, you need to use "Bridged mode", not "Direct attachment".

Have you even tried with Bridged mode?

With my DynDNS provider I have created corresponding domains for the respective VMs,

Why would you need more then one DynDNS domain for your VMs, if they are both on same external IP?
(I know this is not the question, but I wonder)

@scottalanmiller said in Can you run a Windows desktop OS as a server to run AVImark Veterinary Software?:

      Why is it piracy?

Windows Server 2022 and CALs are not a separate product or code base from Windows 11. Windows 11 is a limited use case of Windows 2022 under which you commit to not using the Server 2022 features.

While I agree this is piracy, I do not agree with you reasoning.

W11 and WinServer2022 are different products because MS said so!!!
They package them with different features and license rights, different brand names....
So they are different products in many imporant aspects: marketing, legal....

Volkswagen and Audi cars also have very much in common under the hood, but they are not same products.

On the other hand, I do not find it "discriminatory" either.

It's literally a mechanism to discriminate by the perceived ownership of an IP address by a group of people. It's as discriminatory as it gets.

      No it is not.
It's literally a mechanism to block access from certain IP adresses.

Is it discriminatory or not? It depend on the motives of those who set up geoblocking on that site.

Without knowing the motives, you cannot prove is it discriminatory or not.
I do not find it discriminatory - You are free to feel it is discriminatory.
Neither of us have a proof.

But I do not find it racist ๐Ÿ™‚

Should we call it unnecessarily discriminatory (Instead of racist?)

Yes, OK. Because otherwise, I think we are misusing term "racism" and that is not good (true meening of the word would be lost slowly)

On the other hand, I do not find it "discriminatory" either. ๐Ÿ™‚
I think people are free to geoblock their sites if they think it is usefull for them and if they do not break any law etc.
I do not think we are "entitled" to access all sites by default - if someone do not want it's site to be accessible from Europe, I'm find with it.

But we do not now what site was in question here in the first place (so I cannot claim that there is nothing discriminatory with site in question)
