Another Reason why KVM is superior.

Btw I tried Hyper V manager on Win10, and used Gen2 VMs as oppose to using my standard VMware Workstation or Player or VirtualBox, and I was unable to complete the OS install cause it did some checkups on the VM and ISO and told me that the licensing was not valid, however I think cause I slipstreamed offline updates on the ISO that caused the issue.

It feels when you even wish to try MS stuff, they try to give you the finger some how.

How much RAM did you assign to the VM?

It was not RAM issue, it literraly came up and told me you dont have valid license

      e85ca49c-edc1-449d-a868-a7084bd18e1a-image.png

The same ISO works perfectly in VMware, what they think we should buy stuff and support without testing it first for the first decade or so.

This is why I asked about the RAM.

      https://blog.workinghardinit.work/2014/09/05/fixing-windows-cannot-find-the-microsoft-software-license-terms-make-sure-the-installation-sources-are-valid-and-restart-the-installation-or-windows-installation-encountered-an-un/

      http://blog.powerbiz.net.au/server-2012/hyper-v-and-the-windows-cannot-find-the-microsoft-software-license-terms-error/

Ok I give you that, A feature that they enabled called
      dynamic memory
breaks the install of their very own Win10 install. Even though they could have made better error log.

But when I wanted to use VMware Worksation again i was blocked. It gave me another error after Hyper-V got installed. Like WTF breaking the leader in Virtualization to promote your own shit. apparently Vmware WS and Hyper-V can not go exist. so i said screw it, never again, I will learn hyper V if i was forced in company but no need to bother with it now .

I like 5nine when you are setting up a new environment and you don't have a domain setup yet. You don't have to go through the rigamaroll of setting up the hyper-v server and your machine to talk to each other. You use 5nine and get your Domain setup in a virtual machine and then join the Hyper-v and your machine to it.

Yeah, it is definitely good to get you going.

@scottalanmiller I not quite at that max but pretty close at 56TB in a single volume local storage. Running Win 2012 R2 VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2 hypervisor. So far so good (2 yrs now). No issues other than that initial backup was a real b1tch but now that it's incremental, it's all good. No other caveats that I'm aware of.

@LAH3385 might be good to start a thread and try to determine what your needs are before going down the path of technology. By the time you were asking this question, you were already in pretty deep assuming certain products, product categories and platform HA. We should start with a business needs analysis, use that to set goals and then use the goals to select technology approaches.

Not surprising. Hyper-V isn't really meant to be used in that way aside from admin tasks once in a while. It's really meant to be used to run servers/services. Not a desktop you access through it's own console.

That's why I am not completely shocked. But since Hyper-V has replaced VirtualPC and is being promoted for this specific use case I am a little surprised that getting it competitive with VirtualBox has not been a priority.

@scottalanmiller Seems like more has happened with Hyper-V in the last 12 months, than it ever has in development. I'll be excited to see what happens in the next few years, especially with RemoteFX and VDI (setting up some Raspberry Pi 2's from Amazon for $70, and Raspberry Thin PC download). Tried it out over this last spring in a VMware Horizon View environment, and all I can say is wow. That install has pretty much every remote protocol. You can harden the client by locking out the docks/settings/etc once you're all done setting it up. Not perfect, but nearly there.

Best way I've heard it described is that when you enable Hyper-V on a Windows Server, your Windows Server Core (or GUI) becomes the Linux equivalent of Dom 0

And exactly like installing Xen onto Linux, Xen inserts itself as a "shim" under Linux and then reboots, booting into Xen instead of Linux. HyperV is identical, inserting itself as shim under Windows, rebooting and booting into HyperV instead of Windows.

HyperV is modeled identically after Xen.
