In some cases, understanding when you are or are not may only be important for understanding your own scope and responsibility. Knowing that you are not responsible for data loss when someone in management above you refuses recommended backups is important for sleeping at night or telling a future employer about a previous role.

Knowing that you do (or do not) actually run IT could be potentially important for explaining in a court case who is responsible for decisions leading to breaches, data losses or violations. Titles do not matter in court, roles do.

But in a more day to day, practical sense, explaining to management "above you" at your job that they have decided to take over as the head of IT and that that impacts how you and they need to think about your job. Maybe this can make your job better, maybe this can help management understand business failings. But if we can't put these things into words, we cannot begin to address them.

This seems to be incredibly subjective. This really depends on HOW much better, and what they're willing to pay for. I mean, I know an audiophile who can design, build, and setup the entire room with properly proportioned surround sound with speakers that have a "true to sound" quality for several thousand, but something tells me that isn't what you're looking for.

LOL... audiophile and surround sound don't go together 😉

I don't think I agree with that - but I'd have to check definitions to be sure... If you're a movie audiophile... I'd think you'd want surround more.. if you're a music audiophile.. then heck.. mono might be best.. but stereo is the norm.

I'd agree with @scottalanmiller on this one. I've got a 5.1 at home that sounds great. Still, any surround sound system has to modify the original signal.

If you don't have a screen to blast through, drop that center channel and your sound quality instantly improves. That center channel thing is the bane of sound quality.

      For music sure.

Nope, you missed the point. It's better, period.

the problem with that is that most media have a dedicated center channel for dialog. Without that dialog can get muddled or lost.

Then your system is handling it wrong. Anything that is sent to the center channel sounds better when sent to the R and L channels equally. Literally, the center channel cannot improve the sound over stereo, it's not possible as you have no center ear. All the center channel does is break your perfect sound experience and risk colouration and cause reflection interference. In all seriousness, audio physics makes it impossible for a center channel to improve the sound quality.

well, then perhaps I have to find a way to turn off the center channel when using my receiver.. because when the center is simply unplugged, you can barely hear the dialog.

If you go into the receiver and tell it there is no center channel speaker it will output it to both L&R

And then the sound improves because you don't have this weird sound source floating in the middle of your soundstage disconnected from the stage itself.

The only cost here would be the drive. Clonezilla is free, the use of the PC is free (of course that user is not ideal, so I guess there is cost there 😉 )

The owner is currently out of the country... use his desktop! 😁

@gjacobse Not entirely sure, but I don't think I'd do python. A bit too heavy of a language for this. Might slow things down. I'd be perfectly fine learning a new language to do it lol

A common option for small environments would be to simply include the driver package on a Windows SMB file share in a centrally accessible, read only folder that can be seen from each VM. Then just log into each VM and double click to update! Easy Peasy.

For larger environments, Group Policy will be the most common approach.

The problem is is that you get less control, no mobility, and potentially fewer features. When something goes wrong you can be totally dependent on them.

By "them", do you mean resellers? If so, I agree.

I was just trying to figure out avoiding retail prices but it seems there is no solution for me right now.

      Yes, the resellers.

What's the end goal with this device?

Make an old receiver work that handles HDMI video but no audio.

Wow, that seems weird. A receiver that doesn't handle audio? Is it that the the receiver doesn't understand surround audio, or some other newer thing than the receiver supports?

The receiver doesn't accept HDMI audio. It does audio, just not from that source. I agree, it's weird.

If that's the same receiver I know of, I'd just run the audio parallel via RCA, if that's an option for you.

It's not but might be similar.

Really I don't see any difference in this than the iphone club from Apple these days - other than you all hate them. I don't have an opinion as I haven't been burnt by one personally.

The price $53/m for 24 months, $1272 and you own it at the end (I think) not bad. And the lock-in for them hoping you'll trade it in for the next model at 12 or 18 months, get a new monthly payment and a new device.

Really if you're the type to get a new computer frequently, or a new phone frequently, these plans mostly make sense. Do you pay the most, probably, but there's a lot less hassle selling the device off at the end.

For the most part, I think this is true. To me, leasing an iPhone makes more sense than leasing a car. Sure a car depreciates in value, but once its paid off its yours and its still usable. If you pay off a phone, then you may get another year or 2 out of it. But after a while, it will either break or the network will upgrade their network so far that they will quit supporting your phone.

If I rely on my phone for work or whatnot, then it would probably make more sense to lease it. This way you can ensure that you will have a reliable phone for the most part. When its not working, trade it in and get one that does work. Its their phone. They are just renting it out to you.

Yep, that's the app. I think you can change the settings in General > Storage & iCloud Usage > iCloud Manage Storage > [Choose Device] > Show All Apps and switch it on/off from there.

Either use ACLs/Permissions or encrypt your data. You could use an encrypted loopback device (~"image file") for example, but this requires some background knowledge about the underlying technology.

ACLs are to prevent other users accessing files. Encryption is to stop thieves who steal the drives from accessing them.

Sure but encryption can act as a type of ACL.

Kind of, a shared password kind of ACL.

Sure. Same as group based ACLs. But it's only shared if someone else has your password.

Not really a list unless you do 🙂
