Job offer
Alright, I’ve been quiet about this but I got the official offer tonight but I’m hesitant. The reason(s) are below-
A tech recruiter reached out about a local travel agency (bought out by a global travel agency) is looking for a contract/temp to hire : job duties are imaging ~500 PC to migrate from the current domain to the new setup - local users working through VPN. Once that project finishes up, move to help desk for the remainder of the contract. Guaranteed 40 hours/week.
The tech recruiting company will pay 25/hour , no paid days off, add me to their insurance (which looks to be roughly the same as I got now) for 6 months. After the 6 months, if not sooner, the company I’d be temping for would hire me into the help desk. I’d start from help desk, and as I progressed through help desk could land me a Sys admin position within the company.
My thinking is :
Cons-
contract to hire ( nothing says that once I’m done, they will hire me)
There is no security for the temp when going into these jobs, from what I’ve noticed / heard.
Working help desk - no phone calls emails only.
No paid time off or sick time (important when you have a child and your on your own on the weeks you have him. )
No overtime- they won’t pay me over time. After 40 im done for the week.
I’ve officially moved into the Admin role for the Brink PoS - the other guy officially retired
If it doesn’t work out, im screwed. I feel like it’s a gamble especially with it being temporary.Pros-
Gets me away from the current job.
Gives me more industry based skills / experiences.
No on call.
+~$6.00 an hour.
No urgent requests that require immediate attention (at least during the imaging process)
Closer to home and sons school.
More industry based knowledge- VPN, 2- factor auto setup, Soft phone setup (on PCs) , email management exposure, actually doing things the right way.I guess this is more of a post to see the opinion of the community. Ideas, opinions, thoughts?
No decision has been made yet. -

RE: Job offer
One extremely important thing to me is the industry of the company. Certain industries tend to be more IT friendly and have more robust infrastructure with more needs. For example, the best industries for stability and pay tend to be important ones like financial, Healthcare, government/defense, and a few others.
Other industries like retail, manufacturing, etc don't care about IT or data safety as much as they purely do for profits (right now). I'd gotta say travel agency is probably one of the worst industries to be involved with IMO.
- the obvious reasons why it's bad during a pandemic, but also 2) it's just a middle man and completely unnecessary industry.
I didn't event think about the industry when looking at the job -- Thanks for pointing that out.

LOL - the ISP heard the work Firewall, didn't know what a router was and figured, welp must be the firewall. LOL
probably.
However now im more concered why they have a guy coming from next door to help. like scott said thats not a good thing to have.
Ive never met this guy, and the guys here are just as confused as I (we) seem to be because the main question is "why is he there if he isnt apart of the company? "He was supposed to call me back. Havent heard anything from him since 8 this morning.

Apparently a good order to watch them in for newbies is Episodes 4, 5,2,3,6,7
Im going to use this order when I get a few days in a row to show my girlfriend, who has sadly never seen star wars either, thank you!

12k/year isn't worth the risk included with this offer.
I think we would need to figure out the % of "raise?" A possible 30% raise may/may not be worth the risk.
yeah - figuring it out is the trouble.
He's currently accustomed to getting x amount of OT - and that money is part of his daily life - so that has to be counted in there as well.I had a job once where I was paid $11/hr - normally would be making $22K/year, but my OT made it much closer to 30K/year. My next job was at $35K/year - huge hourly increase, but take home difference was small - but it was nice to move down to a normal 40 hr work week.
Good point. I must have missed the OT part.
It was never said, so No worries.

Cant communicate
We have Machine 1 is trying to access an SMB share on Machine 2 in Windows xp/Windows 7 (Using both OS )
Getting this error:
****You might not have premissions,Contacted server Administrator to find out if you have premissions.Network path not found.****
We have tried everything we can think of:
-
Firewalls are set correctly
-
Set to the same Work group: "WorkGroup"
-
Nodes match: both are running Hybrid
-
*Static Ips
-
*Sharing is enabled on back of house computer and front of house
-
Can "see" on network in WorkGroup and
ping
the computer on back of house
Our Client (the restaurant manager who called) wont tell us exactly what he did so now we have to figure this out. They say they replaced the switch but Im thinking its not a switch.
Is there anything else i can check on the devices?
This is an issue my boss needed a fresh set of eyes on, and I checked everything he checked and then some.thanks

@wrcombs I tried your recommendation.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:relan/exfat
gave me
tag:launchpad.net:2008:redacted
More info: https://launchpad.net/~relan/+archive/ubuntu/exfat
Press [ENTER] to continue or Ctrl-c to cancel adding it.
'Error reading https://keyserver.ubuntu.com/pks/lookup?op=get&options=mr&exact=on&search=0xtag:launchpad.net:2008:redacted: Not Found'

Reading package lists... Done
E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/relan/exfat/ubuntu bionic Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
I searched "See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details" but the successful answers seem to be one of two options:
- something specific to the application, such as adding a key for something unannounced,
- or the recommendation to remove the PPA, which would leave me without an exFAT solution.
I don't know what to do next. Do you have any advice?
Let me look into it. I litterally just googled, maybe @scottalanmiller , or @JaredBusch , or @DustinB3403 can help out more..

File Sharing
Yet another issue on file sharing
On a Window 7 machine, I'm trying to share a folder that is very important to the Business ( this folder give our Point of Sale terminals all of the information it needs to run)
I get this error when I set up the advance sharing:
"An error occurred while trying to share (Folder-name). There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.
The shared resource was not created at this time."I checked File sharing settings, and they are all turned off, when i turn them on, and click save, That doesn't fix it, when i check again they are all turned off again.
Every time I try turning the settings to on it doesnt stick ( I am logged in as administrator.)
(This is my issue, more so )Checked RPC services, everything that should be on is on and set to automatic (according to google search)
Turned Windows Firewall off to see if that was blocking it.
Same issue.Ive been working on this for 2 days now and I cant figure it out.
anything I should check? Anything I should try?
