@wrcombs as a workstation or as a server? What desktop environment?
Fedora 26, workstation
If you have the hardware requirements why not go with deepin? It's pretty sleek
Because this was the one i had on a live USB i just made. Wouldnt "fit" on my laptop, so i got an old desktop and its installing now

Pretty sure that I just busted an iX sales drone on SW. Much like the FreeNAS documentation, he lacks plausible credibility. He spouts words but gets ALL the details wrong in his attempt to make a sale. He claims ZFS is better than RAID (even though ZFS is RAID), gets upset that Oracle made ZFS (Sun made it for Solaris 10), claims 9 million customers of iX systems, claims that the number of customers makes a product viable, etc. Then claims to be both an IT pro with 14 years of experience, but then claims to be a humble home users (red flag, not allowed to post on SW.)
look at you go, weeding out the fakes

RE: Level 1 Basic Training -Network fundamentals
@fuznutz04 said in Level 1 Basic Training -Network fundamentals:
For someone just starting out in level 1 helpdesk, where would be a great place for them to get started on BASIC networking fundamentals?
I've personally used PluralSight in the past. They are still $29/user at the moment (their site says this will increase shortly)
I've also briefly looked at Cybrary. These guys appear to be free but I have no experience with them. https://www.cybrary.it/course/comptia-network-plus/The level of training I am looking for is for someone who has zero IT experience, but wants to start a career in support/helpdesk. (Not bench)
Any recommendations would be helpful.
I've used Cybrary.it prior I liked the videos, also Professor Messer on Youtube, both are great videos and you can learn alot of basics in networking watching those videos.
The videos are about 10-20 minutes a peice and each video is a new or different topic than the one prior.
I personally think its a great starting point for someone wanting to learn from the beginning. -

Also something to avoid
Random people who don't know the basics, making completely crazy configuration changes... that's a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine if they were doing that on a PCI network or something
They did! we use 2 NICs, one for internet, one for the PoS system so they are "seperated" the best they can be. They stacked and added IP's to the PoS NIC, So all of the PoS were accessing the internet...

I use Google Docs, and the ticketing system ; Im the only one who does write ups on things I think we need to know more about, or are things that will be needed in the future.
I/We don't use any fancy third party software for documentation.
We have infrastructure (Me), DevOps, Desktop Support. I think one person from each team should be responsible for technical documentation. I'd prefer for it to be me but I also have a lot on my plate.
I do write up and document everything so I can learn and help someone else out. these guys just do it and move on...

OK so,
- Install an Operating System
- Remote Access that OS - SSH - RDP
- Maybe setup a webserver? IDK about that one. Will have to think of the usefulness of it.
you could also buy some old Clunker PC's and break stuff and have them fix it ?
Real practice
