Yes, if the just didn't mention it, I would assume that I was going to be using GIT to keep it updated. It's only because they so strongly state otherwise that I looked at the repos.

Now one might argue that the solution provider does take this into consideration and fully expects their customers to rebuy when "required to" because the underlying software is considered a security risk. But we all know that this is rarely if ever the case.

Yes but... it makes it the customer's fault 🙂

What's just as bad is often the vendor doesn't have a new solution either.

No different than offering no solution at all. It means that the vendor no longer offers a supported product. Time to move on.

Best practice, which almost no one follows, is to use explicit paths in scripts rather than implicit. then you don't need that at all.

I guess that makes 100% sense since you have to start the script with an absolute path ha.

It's actually decently straightforward. Just like signing into any product to use. If you are signing in as someone else, you need to be aware of the licensing and limitations and violations that might come with that. MS Office isn't unique in any way here. You pay per user, it actually makes it easier than it used to be.

      I meant in general.

Like I use my work account for everything, which I know is a no-no. (And probably the cause of half of this.)

But I have a OneDrive account under it, a ODfB account, a Microsoft account, my XBOX account. Know what I mean?

It could just be me. Probably, probably is.

Oh, the issue is too many accounts from one vendor. Yes, I get that. Although they are a massive vendor and those are mostly unique services. ODfB and OneDrive can't be the same, obviously, one is the office, one is home.

Looks like SPICE could do it, found this comment on Wikipedia:

      Xspice
The X.Org Server driver for the QXL framebuffer device includes a wrapper script[11] which makes it possible to launch an Xorg server whose display is exported via the SPICE protocol. This enables use of SPICE in a remote desktop environment, without requiring QEMU/KVM virtualization.

Right now all my production Linux hosts are on VMs so I have snapshots of the backend infrastructure along with application-level backups of data as needed. Mostly these are EC2 instances running WordPress where I have a base AMI ready to go with offsite BackupBuddy backups. It's served me well in the few times I've had to use it - I can go from a launching an instance to all data recovered in about 15 minutes or less.

With that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Veeam's Linux backup works once it's released!

That is the biggest question, really. And also, if it was saved as a DOCX or an ODT from LibreOffice.

So I figured it out. Just like most every other problem I've had, it was something stupid I did. I initially started with a user "john" and set up permissions but decided later to use "jhooks". I had accessed the shares with the "john" username first and that's why some worked. I never added the jhooks username to samba (must have forgot since some shares were working) and that's why I couldn't log into the other shares with that username.

That will teach me to try to do this stuff on Friday night when I'm tired.

Well worse things have happened, it could've been a client outage 🙂

On the Windows side we have the free version of Unitrends and Veeam for VMs, but I'm not sure of one for bare metal.

Those can become coupled if you share accounts. So it is not a panacea.

After some more testing it seems enabling output to journald.conf has worked. I did restart it after I tried that but it didn't show up. Now it's working. Not sure what changed, but at least it's working.
